Hey, I think you're super!1

Hello again, and welcome to chez moi. I'm Abu_Fulan, proud member of the Third Estate. Thanks for visiting. While you're here, be sure to check out my suggested reading list for fellow members, "located near the bottom." I'm currently on leave from the ZSDW to focus on grad school, but feel free to leave a message. I'll still check in, albeit infrequently until I have a handle on my course load. Take care of each other, and don't set anything on fire while I'm gone. Wish me luck here at the outset of my last first year!

One final note: I have finally decided on a rifle. Scroll down to see which one I chose.

American Assistant Surgeon General Ali Khan has begun a legitimate zombie apocalypse public preparation campaign in conjunction with the CDC.

When I started thinking way too much about zombies: People who believe that I think too much about zombies are probably destined to become zombies.
What started my zombie fixation: Night of the Living Dead. Nashville Flood of 2010 made me get serious about preparation for the zedpoc and other catastrophes.
Favorite zombie book: Zombies can't write books.
Favorite zombie movie: The Crazies.
Favorite quote in any zombie movie: None yet.

My Survival Plan:

My “handle” should you look for you on the radio waves or web: Abu Fulan.
My location: Nashville, TN area. (U.S.)
Is my plan dependent on zombies in my home town, or anywhere? No, it’s pretty generic and applicable to several SHTF scenarios.
Will I be staying in my home or headed somewhere else? BOL 1 is a couple counties away.
If I'm heading out, how do I plan to get there? Wife’s sedan.
Got anyone I want to take with me? Wife and cat. Wife's parents will meet us there.
How will I communicate with the outside world, or do I plan to go the hermit route? I’ll keep a low profile and will mainly get news from an AM/FM/weatherband radio.
How am I planning to get food and water? My BOL is on a freshwater lake. There's catfish in there bigger than me. The property has a small garden on it, and enough canned food and frozen meat to last a couple weeks.
What’s my weapon of choice? Do you need to reload that thing? Gotta plan for that? My bug out weapon is a Ruger SP101 .357 Magnum revolver. I have some ammo set aside for a rainy day. It’s not a weapon I chose for the end of the world; it’s my everyday carry gun. There’s a 22LR pistol and 22 ammo at the BOL. My shotgun is on loan to my sister.
Got a survival philosophy? Complacency will get you killed. Once the event happens, don’t expect anyone to come to the rescue.
Am I willing to hook up with other survivors? People I knew before the event? Sure, I’d be interested in that, although the final decision will be situation-dependant. Everybody else, though, is pretty much persona non grata.
Is my plan based on a book/movie/blog/scientist other survivors may have heard of? Honestly it’s not much of a plan yet. It would get us through the first couple weeks… It’s nothing unusual, and it’s based on common sense rather than a book or movie plot.

My kit:

My carry weapon is a Ruger SP101 (see picture below), which will also serve as my bug out gun. I like it a lot, and if you want to know why check out the review I wrote for it. I carry it in a Fobus speed scabbard with Safariland speedloader and speedloader carrier just behind the holster. That Fobus is incredibly comfortable and with just a phillips head screwdriver you can adjust the cant 360 degrees -- meaning it can go from a strong side hip position to weak side cross draw in about 60 seconds.

Due to a change in my daily routine, I have reworked my gear. I now pack a 15 lbs "get home kit" in the trunk of my car. The purpose of this new kit is to enable me to walk home from where I am on weekdays. The rest of what I would need for a bug out is at home in a separate bag and includes a Midland Base Camp radio, and an 8 x 10 tarp, 5 mil. Anyway, here are the contents of the new Get Home Kit:

The Winchester 1200. This is what I would like to serve as my primary weapon in case of a bug out, but I would have to come home to retrieve it. Chambered for 2.75 inch shells, 4+1 capacity, 18.5 inch barrel. Now that I've added a sling and a shell carrier, the only other thing I want to do to this gun is mount a flashlight.
home - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki This is the new Ruger. I first decided I wanted this gun a couple years ago, but due to financial constraints compromised with a Taurus 605. Recently sold that and bought this. It has a capacity of 5 .357 Magnum cartriges, sports a 2.25 inch barrel, and fits my hand perfectly. Weighs in at about 26 oz unloaded.
As you might recall I have, for several months, been trying to decide what sort of rifle I wanted to purchase. I knew that it would serve two important roles for the near future - a HD weapon and a primary bug out weapon, backed up by the .357. Well, I narrowed it down to these three:

Mossberg 702 Plinkster. 22LR, magazine-fed, semi-auto, 10 round capacity, 4.2 lbs unloaded, 18" barrel. Price new is approximately $120.

Hi-Point 995TS. 9mm, magazine-fed, semi-auto, 10 round capacity, 6.2 lbs unloaded, 16" barrel. Price new is about $300.

Marlin 1894C. .357 Magnum, lever action, 9 round capacity, 6 lbs unloaded, 18.5" barrel. NIB it's around $400.

So which one did I choose? None of the above. I went with a Marlin 795 .22LR. It is similar to the Mossberg seen above, but by all accounts a better quality rifle. It is a 4.5 pound, semi-auto rifle with a last shot bolt hold-open feature and a 10 round factory nickel magazine. It comes with a pretty vanilla buckhorn sight system that's fine for plinking but which will need some upgrading before squirrel hunting. In general, though, it's a solid little rifle.
Marlin 795 .22LR
I took it to the range a day or two ago for a 100 round break-in, and with CCI Mini Mag ammo had only one issue (a failure to eject that resulted in brass stuck in the action at a 90 degree angle). I'm looking forward to getting a 25 round magazine from Shooter's Ridge and a couple more of those sturdy factory 10 rounders. Anyway, at $130 this thing was a steal. Keep your eyes peeled for a full review in the weapons review section in the near future.

Okay, here is my revised take on the ZSDW membership card:

And below is the back of the revised card. The space on the right side would be blank so you could insert your own motto, goofy picture, etc.; the emblem there is just to give you an idea of what you could do:

Abu_Fulan's Suggested Reading List -- Material for the Discerning Gentleman's Physical and Intellectual Survival:

Hide Your Assets and Disappear: A Step-by-Step Guide to Vanishing Without a Trace by Edmund Pankau -- A great bug-out reference of a different sort than we usually discuss here at ZSDW, full of intelligent advice.

Build the Perfect Survival Kit by John McCann -- This is a good starting point for newbies, and a useful refresher for veteran members.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens -- I have read this more than once, and it entertains and impresses me more with each reading. Even if "fine literature" is not your thing you will appreciate the author's masterful technique and sense of humor.

French Revolution and Napoleonic Era by Owen Connelly -- The whole book is a good read, but especially the chapter (5?) describing Napoleon's defense of the French legislature during a riot in Paris (1795). With only a few hundred men and a small cavalry detachment under his immediate command he successfully faced down a whole city AND mutinous militia units.

Joseph Plumb Martin's memoirs -- This guy was an American private in the Revolutionary War, and wrote about what he saw in everyday, down to earth language. With his hilarious descriptions of supply shortages, standard officer stupidity, and backstabbing civilians any soldier will find himself on familiar ground and enjoy this classic.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy -- If you're a survivalist, you've got to read this book. That's all I'm gonna say about it.

I've been thinking about signing up for a disaster relief team leader course through this church I volunteer with. They do a 9 hour class on how to organize volunteers (I think the pamphlet said less than 20), coordinate civilian efforts with local authorities, etc. Have any of you done something like this? I think it could really make a difference in the next flood or tornado. Thoughts?
Do you find this valuable?
