what are some other good weapons besides guns that are useful
and really good in combat

It really comes down to what you know, and your opinions.
Debates rage on this site everyday about the best weapons, blunt vs. blade, and which guns are best.
None of those help if you don't even know where to start. How about this, do you own a baseball bat? if so there's your melee weapon, learn to swing it from different angles, get a practice analog( maybe a plastic kiddie bat) and spar w/ someone.
If you just wanna buy something, i recommend a mace or warhammer( wanna guess which side i'm on in the blunt vs.blade debate)

it all comes down to wether you can acquire the item before z-day, and are you willing to trust your life to it.
I know this may not help alot, but it really comes down to you. Are you willing to seek out what you want? Are you willing to train with said item?(if not don't even bother carrying it).

Extendable batons can pretty easily smash in a small part of the skull, and are very compact.

Kukris are wieldy, hardy weapons with a weight-forward balance useful for chopping more than just heads.

Kaiser blades, or brush axes, have a pointed edge that won't wedge as easily as a normal axe, and the blade can split bone with minimum effort.
