My dad took me down to the range for the first time on saturday. First time firing a gun.
Shot a .22 Marlin. Had a bolt, one shot loaded at a time. It had fiberglass sights (I think that's what they're called).
Fired 100 rounds (total): 50 at 10yds, 30 at 50 ft, and then 20 at 25 yds, all while more or less standing. It was an indoor range.
Shot high by a couple of inches, and to the right a bit at 10 yds. I corrected myself on the side to side, so the last 75 shots were just high. At 10 yards, the group was about 2.5 inches, and about 3.5 at 50 feet. At 25 yds though, it was about 5 inches including a flier, and several inches higher than the rest.
The first shot was the most accurate.
The rifle was a bit small, meant for children. The recoil was actually less than I expected.
Overall, an extremely pleasant experience.

Ha ha my first gun was a .22 Marlin as well. It was a model 60 semi-auto, but...
Certainly not terrible for a first time. As long as you can hit the target your first time. you're doing fine.
