Have you ever been sitting there in your living room minding your own business when something suddenly happens and you think "Is thsi it, is this the beginning? has it started"? I am sure we've all had a time in our lives when we've asked ourselves that question. What is yours? What did you do?
My latest was about a week ago. I was sitting on my couch getting fat playing with my son when I started hearing a helicopter. No cause for concern, I live near a private air strip but when it started sounding as if 20 helicopters were going by I started to ask that age old question. I stopped what I was doing, got up and went directly out to the porch expecting to see a chinook hovering over my apartment. No, sadly it wasn't but I could still hear the tell tale helicopter blades. Then I came to my senses and realized what it was I heard. Some construction crew was using a hoe ram on the other side of the freeway. Inside the house it sounded muffled as a helicopter would. I looked up and around and sighed. "Not today" I said to myself and dejectedly went back inside to my son. Please, share your experience for a good laugh or maybe even some insight into what tricks our minds can play on us.

For those of us that plan on making a defensible long term base I would suggest a few different ways to go about it.
1. Connex Boxes. A standard box is about 8 to 10 ft high, 8 ft wide and 20 ft long. They weigh roughly 2000 lbs (1 ton) and can be moved with a simple warehouse fork lift. There is one set of doors on one end that can be latched and locked thoroughly. The thing about these is that if you can find a large enough stock pile and plenty of room and time you can possibly make a 10ft high perimeter. Where can you find them? Easy, find your local train yard. Plenty of room, empty boxes and there will be a lift on site that is made for moving these. A crude gate can be made by simply moving a box out of the way with the lift as long as you remembered to keep the lift inside with you. Welding knowledge can then turn this from a large steel box into a strong perimeter and actual living quarters by cutting doors into the sides. If you have enough boxes you can also stack them on top of each other and have a 20ft high perimeter, then just install some ladders onto the side (on the inside of course) and you can do recon around your perimeter from the top of it. 2. Pre-fenced in perimeters. Find a large building with a high fence that has a gate and is near resources. This part is all about planning ahead and keeping your eyes open unless you plan to drive all over town looking for the perfect spot come Z-Day. If you see a spot in town that looks defensible then remember it and look it up on Google Earth later for a better idea of the surroundings. The connex idea is a bit out there but would be well worth the effort as it may also disguise from non-friendly survivors. The fenced in area is a good quick way to go and may even prove to be a good start point before making any real plans.
