Hey, I think you're super!1

Name: Thalia
Qualifications: Bachelor of Applied Science (Microbiology), Honours First Class (Microbiology)
Location: Queensland, Australia

Introduced to Zombie survival concept: 20 June 2009 after borrowing boyfriend's copy of ZSG (Brooks) - yes I know it's humour, that didn't stop it from getting me thinking about Z-day and how to prepare. Already had plans/equipment on hand for biological event (Normal paranoia for a Microbiologist) now just have to coordinate weapons for defence.

Previous Training/Skills:
No formal training, however basics taught by my Ex-Military, Ex-Police Mum ("Kids, Merry Christmas! Oh? What did Santa get you? *mock surprise* Survival kits? Isn't Santa clever! Please don't take your knives to school" or "Anyone want to help me suture my leg?/Splint your brother's arm" or "hey kids, let's play a game, you have an hour to plan the fortification of the house. Write me a list of anything we don't have that you think we need" - and she goes and buys it)
Brought up in a rural environment where logistics are important (the need to stockpile non-perishable foods, know exactly how much water is available and have a medical chest becomes ingrained).
Hiking, camping, basic self defence skills.
Much practice in mock drills on how to fortify a house/survive a biological event/natural disaster - emphasis placed on defending supplies from looting parties/other survivors because my folks don't believe in zombies - they do believe in looters and thieves.
Historical Recreationist (comfortable in my armour, familiar with my swords - though I don't think they'd be the most useful weapon against zombies, most of our training is to cause incapacitating wounds - things that will cause them pain/blood loss, which won't impact a zombie)
Can also sew, cook and keep house (lol - couldn't help it)

The Plan:
1. Survive initial attack
- Leave early if this luxury presents itself
- Fortify and defend
2. Get to folks place
- Rural location
- Easily defensible
- Potential for self sufficiency
- Non-communal source of water
- Equipment/resources required for fortification already on site (there's nothing quite like the realisation that your Mum keeps stuff on hand to fortify the house if the need arises!)
- Minimal livestock but two sheepherding dogs - would also aim to liberate some ankle high yippy dogs from the local shelter to serve as alarms (require less food and (call me cruel) they are more expendable - anyone with half a brain is going to realise that a dog will serve as a good alarm/first line of defence).
3. Deal with the Zeds from there

Thing I'll miss most after Z-Day:My XKCD fix.

Favourite USEFUL Book:the Therapeutic Guidelines series, in particular TG Antibiotic - lists infection types and which antimicrobial therapies to use.

(second attempt)

G'day everyone
Introduced to Z survival concept when my bf gave me copy of Brooks ZSG (Saturday) and found it entertaining, but pity those who take it as gospel. I was brought up by my Ex-Military, Ex-Police (Aussie) Mum who took 'shaping' us pretty seriously (she's sets us missions to use the stuff she stockpiles to defend the house, took us on a year long camping trip, taught survival skills & survival thinking. Now she teaches Chemistry- *BANG*)
Pretty stupid for a microbiologist not to consider a zombie apocalypse, but I guess I'm only human :)

3 questions

1. I'm an Aussie- firearms aren't as readily available as in the USA, could someone please advise some other realistic strategies/weaponry for large scale defence- not for going on a stupid gung ho rampage but as reasonable firearm alternatives.

2. Does anyone know what force a nail/brad is projected from a compressed air nailgun? One of my siblings is determined that they'd be suitable for using to deter raiders/zombies from a potential fortress on the roof of our folk's place. I disagree- I don't think they'd have sufficient force to really even serve as an annoyance. Ever tried asking a shop attendant "so, reckon this'd be good to shoot people with from my roof?"

3. Has anyone played with a Stanley Fubar? While they look pretty sweet as a fallback weapon (more useful than hammers & crowbars weren't my cup of tea) I'm interested in your opinions- especially as I'm considering ordering one on the net - unseen. Thought it might make a good aniversary present for my bf seeing as he thinks sorta highly of Brooks - an alternative to his crowbar. (yeah, I know that's a chick question but it's still valid - remember - FALLBACK weapon - those that would choose it as a primary weapon justify coz I'm curious)

Cheers!
