Getting into metalcrafting
Jun 11 2010, 4:02 PM EDT
As some of you may already know, im an inventor and craft various implements of death. i want to increase my capabilities, but i need some advice first. see, i want to get into working with sheet metal and what not. i know i probably dont have the cash now for the equipment, but about how much will a blow torch system cost, and how much is it to fill the tank? any basic tips/links/etc. would be helpful. thanks, -Soviet |

Hi soviet.I'm a machinist from Australia, therefore a fellow thinker, tinkerer and metal worker. Are you after a LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) or Oxy set? (uses oxygen and acetylene to produce extreme temps) I you're unsure then let me know what you'll mainly use it for and i'll help you decide. |

"Hi soviet.im looking into machinist works in order to craft my own things... for example knives, swords, shields, hell even armor. the armor is my more direct goal.. trying to design a layering that can withstand say... enemy fire. just as an experiment.. and if it works i might produce a suit . i want to be able to cut through thin sheet metal(steel), up to at most 3/8" steel plates. so.. whichever you think is better.. id appreciate the advice/guidance. |

Sounds like you want an oxygen/ acetylene kit. They can be used for things like braze welding, fusion welding, Oxy cutting (can cut up to a few inches thick). They are basicly an all-in-one kinda set. I cant really help with prices tho, i dont know how much they are in the states but im sure someone at a gas supplier can help you out. You could also ask a plumber if you know one cos they use them quite often. Any more questions about metal working? send them my way. |

Oh i forgot an entire section...If you're looking into forging from raw material you can make a forge for under a grand. you'll need a large LPG canister with hoses and nozzles and also some sort of fan or 'blower'. put it all in a steel drum and you're ready for black-smithing... well its not quite that easy but you get the picture. Again im sorry i cant give you prices but all that gear cost me around $600. Try looking on ebay and other websites for some cheap bargains. Do you live close to your neighbours? if so, noise does become a problem. Metal working is my career and also my passion. If you have any question, no matter how small, send me a PM. |
