we would go out in smaller groups and kill all zombies around. if you don't kill them, they are just gonna (they will probably) grow in numbers and it would be much harder to escape if you had to.i would not go for the "kill em all!" thing. it would be a waste of ammo and probably lives. i hope thats a good answer :) |

Ok, I'm here to poke holes in your plan, but not in a malicious way. Just so you can fill them with something better that will keep you alive. You say you will be gathering a crew. How many? What are their skillsets? You plan to raid food stores and other shops. If this is when the Panic starts, you are SOL. Everyone will be doing the same thing. Why do you think every newbie on the site says they will be going to Wal-mart? Because every fucker on the planet has the same idea. Panic starts, go to the shops and grab everything you can. You need to be ahead of them. Stockpile now. If you eat tuna, buy enough to last you for 2 years. That's how long a can typically lasts. Each time you use one, buy another AND PUT IT AT THE BACK OF THE CUPBOARD. Rotate your stockpile so you are eating the oldest stuff first. Yes it will be expensive, but how much will starving when the Panic hits cost you? Answer: one life. Brick house with hurricane shutters. Excellent choice. For a Bug In location, you could not have picked something better. Now how are you going to reinforce it? The shutters will make the neighbours houses easier targets, but at some point you will be the only people left on the block, the others having fled or been killed. Move ALL the food, water, tools, weapons, ammo upstairs first chance you get. If that means you have to carry them back down every time you want to cook, fine. Inconvenience is better than having your supplies stranded because you lost the ground floor. You hear them start to break in. Everyone runs upstairs. Destroy the stairs. Good, now how are you going to escape if you need to? Is there a roof you can climb out on? If not, you need a ladder. You can buy a rope ladder now. It is useful to have as emergency fire escape even if zombies don't attack. |

You say you are going to look for survivors. But how will you feed them? So far you are living on the canned and dry goods you stockpiled. And how long will they last?Assume that the Panic has hit, and all the shops have been emptied. Where are you going to get food and supplies for your trip north. Which brings me to the vehicle. An F650 gets about 14 mpg. Fully laden, and armoured, that will be about 7 mpg. But it comes with dual 107 gallon tanks. Which gives you a range of 1,498 miles. Now lets assume you are heading for Seven Sisters Falls. Its a farming town in Canada near a freshwater lake. (I just found the best looking place at short notice for reference.) Direct travel puts it at 1,500 miles. Add on for avoiding cities, highways etc. 2,000 miles. So you are short by 500 miles, or about 72 gallons. So you will need to be looking to refuel somewhere north of Springfield, MO. All you will need is a single gas station with 72 gallons of diesel. Doesn't sound too bad, right? But like Wal-mart, people will rush for fuel when the Panic hits. So the odds of finding a station with any fuel at all is slim. Even then you will need to manually pump it from the groundstore, since the electricity to make the pumps work will be off. A better alternative might be to siphon abandoned cars. But you will need to make sure you get diesel, not petrol. Draining a tank, or worse, an engine is not something to be done with zombies crawling around. And in the US, it is a much smaller percentage of cars that run on diesel than in Europe. Possibly just drain trucks. If you know how. You also have an armoured bus, fuel carrier, and 18 wheel box carrier. But I doubt you will actually be able to get all of those. Unless you own all these before Z day, it will be too risky to try and get them and make them afterwards. |

Finally, you arrive in Canada. You have eaten through much of your supplies. Now what? Other people have headed north. They have also eaten the canned food, their own and the ones they could find. Now what?It is possible to grow food in Canada. But let's take the worst case scenario. You have arrived in November. All the crops have been harvested, and winter is about to strike. The next time you can plant is around April, May. They grow until September. That means you cannot eat them until September. 10 months without any more food coming in. You will need to have one years food supply stockpiled, as a minimum. Two would be better to allow for a poor first harvest. I assume you know little about horticulture and farming? Then it is likely that you will get less return on the first crop. It is said you need between 0.5 and 2 acres of land to feed one person for a year. For first timers, thats probably double. Are you carrying enough seeds to do up to 4 acres of land per person? To give you an idea how big this is, stand on the goal line of a football field. Now look at the 10 yard line of the opposing end. That far, and the whole width of the field, is ONE acre. Big, isn't it? Say one packet of tomato seeds has 50 in it. You plant them one foot apart in rows that are two feet apart. From the corner of the goal line, you have gone ten feet forwards, ten sideways. That first crop is 100 square feet of 86,400 square feet necessary to keep you alive for a year. (Based on 2 acres per person.) So whatever you are bringing with you, will be all you have for a long, long, time. Say you have two years stockpiled. And after one year, you have fresh food that will last for six months. On the second year, you have enough for nine months. The third year you have enough for twelve months. Year 0-1, you eat 12 months stockpile, 1-2, you eat 6, 2-3, you eat 3. 3-4, you are now self-sufficient. 3 months stockpile left. |

But growing in Canada is hard. You have cold temepratures, short season. Limited crops you can grow.Since everyone will be heading north, it is a judgement call whether people will be friendly and pull together, or try and kill each other for a tin of beans. But I would say head to a remote, defensible location with good soil and better weather. How about...ok, Sherman county, Oklahoma. Nothing but fields. (Again, first place I saw on Google Earth that looked reasonable. No research done on the place whatsoever.) Better climate for growing. Yes, you would need to guard a perimeter rather than letting the freezing cold stop Zack. But the cold doesn't just stop zombies. It stops people from living too. So there you go. A few holes poked through, but now you have a chance to repair. Let me know how you get on. |
