About Me: When I started thinking way too much about zombies: Recently What started my zombie fixation: Left 4 Dead Favorite zombie book: World War Z Favorite zombie movie: Shawn of the Dead Favorite zombie TV show: (there's really only one) The Walking Dead Favorite quote in any zombie movie: None My Survival Plan: My “handle” should you look for me on the radio waves or web: VoodooHackMy location: We live in an apartment in The Bronx. New York City and New York State make it difficult to own a firearm to the point where the hassle isn't worth it. In short, we are without any projectile weapons. This is a densely populated area, so the probability of looting and overall crime is very high in case of zombie outbreak. Our apartment building is a stone and brick 5 floor pre-war walk-up consisting of about 25 units. To get to my apartment requires getting through 3 sets of locked doors. The building has surveillance cameras which we can commandeer for our protection. There is one main entrance which is mostly glass. This will have to be barricaded on the outside. Side and back entrances are heavy steel doors with 3-way slide bolt locks so are very defensible. The area has a few small bodegas, a few large groceries and assorted stores within walking distance. They'll probably be looted quickly, but it couldn't hurt to check. Is my plan dependent on zombies in your home town, or anywhere? My plan is dependent on immediate need, so unless havoc breaks loose in my area, I'll be in prep mode as we listen for news and official instruction. Will I be staying in my home or headed somewhere else? I'll stay home until (lack of) news indicates otherwise. If I'm heading out, how do I plan to get there? I'm in NYC where there's little need for a car. In a SHTF situation, the default mode of transportation is on foot. If we can find a vehicle, we'll take it. Got anyone I want to take with me? I'm not going solo. I have a wife, daughter and dog. Although I'm relatively fit and have roughed it when I was younger, my wife is a city-dweller through and through. She's not an outdoors type so has no concept of a SHTF scenario. In fact, she believes we don't need a plan and I anticipate some resistance from her if we need to evacuate our building. She will also not allow any firearms in our apartments. She is asthmatic, so long treks will be challenging. My dog is a small 12 pound house dog and realistically will not be able to protect the family beyond barking a warning. My daughter is college-age and physically fit, but small of stature. Both my daughter and I are familiar with firearms, so if we somehow get access to them, we know how to use them. How will I communicate with the outside world, or do I plan to go the hermit route? CB, crank-powered portable radio How am I planning to get food and water? Since we're initially bugging IN, we'll live off what we have in the house and save our emergency rations for when we need to. Afterward, we'll have no choice but to resort to foraging. What’s my weapon of choice? Do you need to reload that thing? Gotta plan for that? Primary weapon will have to be one of my swords. I have one wakizashi that I favor so that will be my primary. Otherwise, I have one other wakizashi, two katanas, a short sword and a cane sword. Those will have to do until I find something better. Again, the process to legally obtain a firearm in NYC is impractical, so I don't have one. Got a survival philosophy? No set philosophy. In a changing world, I will have to trust my gut and my judgment as situations arise. Am I willing to hook up with other survivors? Yes. Living in an apartment building, it's almost a given. I know my neighbors and they know me. Trust level is medium to high. We will watch television and listen to the news for instructions from the emergency broadcast system. We simply cannot act without at least a modicum of intel. Wife's duty is to listen for news and use our handheld CB to try to collect information. Daughter's job is to gather our bug out bag(s)(bug out bag contents coming soon) and any other necessities. We'll perform last minute supply triage if we need to go mobile. My job is to secure the apartment, then check on my neighbors, going apartment by apartment, floor by floor. I'll need to give instruction to pack essentials and 3 days of non-perishable food in the chance we need to move. I'll assume that they have no plan. Is my plan based on a book/movie/blog/scientist other survivors may have heard of? My plan is whatever sensible things I can think of. Any ideas I have are based on my experience with 9/11 as I work in Manhattan and was there when it happened. There was also an anthrax scare and steam pipe explosion(people responded with the presumption of terrorist attack). People ran around with little to no plan. I intend not to be one of those people. Personal Bug Out Bag: This will be in addition to the family bug out bag/survival kit. I can also use this as a bag I'd carry when scouting or otherwise away from the BOL for a short amount of time.
Evaluation of my gear: Coming soon
