About Me: When I started thinking way too much about zombies: 2007 when I started "obsessing" about survivalism, but I have always been a believer. Prior to my obsession, I was just an enthusiast. What started my zombie fixation: I have always loved post-apocalyptic scenarios... Favorite zombie book: Zombie Survival Guide Favorite zombie movie: Original Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead. I love Shaun of the Dead for its humor Favorite quote in any zombie movie: "Aim for the head" -take your pick as to which zombie movie... My Survival Plan: My “handle” should you look for you on the radio waves or web: Bell or Boy Scout My location: North Texas Is my plan dependent on zombies in your home town, or anywhere? My plan is based on the outbreak initially spreading in the and urban environment. I live in a rural development so the outbreak would take a while to reach and overcome my neighborhood, but it will eventually reach everywhere, so I have to prepare for that as well. Will I be staying in my home or headed somewhere else? Hold up and the Bug out after the initial panic. Probably about 48-72 hours after Zero-hour. My house is not fortifiable enough to hold up too long despite the fact that it is in a fairly rural area. It is a newly built neighborhood about an hour north of Dallas, Texas. If I'm heading out, how do I plan to get there? 4 wheel-drive/Jeep until I am hoofing it. Got anyone I want to take with me? Just my wife and son, until I meet up with my friends. Will always have a small group though. Unless there is a large and SECURE (oxymoron) compound, a small group is better than a large group. No more than 10-12. I am also in the process of planning, preparing, and packing the Mrs. and Jr.'s BOBs. Because I am responsible for them, I am considering their comfort as well as their survival when planning, preparing, and packing my own. I could survive on much less than the three of us could. How will I communicate with the outside world, or do I plan to go the hermit route? Until I know you and your intentions, be prepared to have a barrel trained on you. I need to invest in some better long-range hand radios. How am I planning to get food and water? When supplies run out, scavenge, hunt and filter/boil water. Basically, if I have to, I will beg borrow and steal to survive. Hopefully, it won't come to that. I grew up on a farm, so I know how to raise/grow food, but that will be a long term goal. What’s my weapon of choice? Shotgun, but I am looking for something better than what I currently have. My Belgium Browning A-5 is made for hunting, not shooting people in close quarters. And as reliable as it is, it has jammed a few times with crappy ammo - it is an automatic. I am planning on getting a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 Express. I want some pump reliability. I also am in the market for a new handgun for my backup. I want a 9mm or .45 ACP. Do you need to reload that thing? Gotta plan for that? Due to the weight of shotshells, I am not going to be able to carry too much ammo for the shotgun. When I am out of ammo, I will still be able to use the gun as a club, but I will need a backup and a better type of melee weapon, but not sure what yet. Got a survival philosophy? The gun you have always beats the gun you want. Be prepared... for anything. Am I willing to hook up with other survivors? Yes, until they become a liability or threat. Is my plan based on a book/movie/blog/scientist other survivors may have heard of? No. However, I am an avid outdoors loving (hunt/fish/camp) Boy Scout who grew up on a farm and went to law school. I am blessed to possess many skills that can be used to survive. If I had to choose something to base my plan off of- Red Dawn and Dawn of the Dead are my two favorite movies, so when my plan is actually drafted, they will have to have impacted it even if just in a small way. I understand that life is not a movie. My Current Arsenal: Heritage .22 Revolver (LR and .22 Magnum) Henry .22 Lever-Action Rifle - Iron sights Belgium Browning Auto-5 12 ga. Shotgun (28" vented and 24" special slug barrels) Winchester 1894 .30-30 - Iron sights Tikka .300 Win-Mag with 4-12x Leupold Scope Colt Navy 1851 Black Powder .44 Revolver My B.O.B.- I have always been someone who packs way too much stuff. My friends and colleagues call me "Boy Scout" because I am always prepared for almost everything (and I get accused of being a goody-goody). I know that the size and weight is an issue, so I will need to remove and consolidate what I have. I do believe that whatever event causes me to evacuate my home will require me "bugging out" longer than three days. That is one reason for my bringing so much stuff. Also, as I did not grow up or live for very long around the area I am currently located, I do not have a BOL yet. That is another reason for the amount of equipment. I may need to look for a better BOL for some time. All of my family is at least 1000 miles away, so in that department, I will have no refuge. What I currently have (What I am still planning on obtaining is in RED. What I consider completely luxury items are italicized. They are the first to get tossed. I have also relabeled some items with GREEN. These are items that I have decided that are just too heavy to include, but I am hesitant to remove them completely):
My obnoxious First-Aid Kit: (I have some of it, but most of it seems like a small field hospital and not something anyone would bug-out with. I will be carrying only my IFAK (Individual First-Aid Kit) in my pack which contains some but much less than what is below)- Army surgical kit; Epi-pen; Advil (sunburn, minor pains); Aspirin (“heart meds”); Tylenol-3 (Rx painkiller); Benadryl; Antacids; Immodium; Potassium Iodide (radiation); Neosporin; 10% hydrocortisone ointment; Antiseptic wipes or bottle of Curel; Antiseptic soap in its own baggie; Hydrogen peroxide / disinfectant; Iodine; Calamine lotion; Band-Aids; Butterfly bandages; Small roll bandage; Kerlix Bandages; Ace bandages (knee, ankle); Curved sewing needle; Sewing needles & cotton thread; 10’ nylon thread; Scalpel / blades; Tweezers; Tampons (for wound care); Sponges; Eyewash / eye drops; Soft earplugs; Dental Floss; Latex/Nitrile Gloves; Penlight; CPR Mask; Cravat; Trauma Shears; 1” or 2” bandage tape; Chem. Ice / Heat pack; Mole skin. You may have noticed my Other/Special supplies above. If you cannot tell by reading that, I am a Type-1 diabetic. I have had it 25 years and never had any problems. I played football and ran track in college. I keep myself in pretty good shape. The only thing that being diabetic has prevented me from doing is enlisting in the military. In any type of apocalypse, I am pretty screwed, but I am going down with one Hell of a fight. There currently is a Walgreen's about an eighth of a mile from my home and a rural ER center about half a mile, so I am hitting those up at some point before I bug-out. It will ultimately depend on how dangerous it is to do so because I can see it turning into a death-trap. Please feel free to comment on my kit. ~Bell
