As a fellow Canadian, I am wondering where you got all that stuff. The AR15 in particular. I wouldn't have thought that those would be legal in Canada, especially with a 30 round mag. And the ballistic helmet as well, could a civilian get access to such a thing, and is ownership of it legal for civilians in this country?

Yep AR15's are legal to own in Canada. I bought that semiautomatic S&W M&P 15 at Gobles ghun works in London Ontario for around $2000 brand new out of the box.

In canada this rifle is considered a "restricted" firearm...which means that you have to have restricted status on your P.A.L. The Glock 17 is also restricted.

Magazine capacity is limited in Canada. I`m only allowed to put a 5 or 10 round magazine into the rifle legally. All of my "30" round magazines are "pinned" to 5 or 10 rounds. When and if the $hit hits the fan...those pins will "fall out" somehow make each magazine a full 30 round magazine.

Civilians can go out and get their P.A.L. (Possesion & Aquisition Licence) at any time. There are two classes...unrestricted and restricted. Take the course and apply for both at once...it's just easier that way. If you pass the test at the end of the course send off the paperwork to the RCMP and wait. Once you get your card you can buy anything you want.

The ballistic helmet is mine from when I was in the military. It use to be green, I painted it black to go with the rest of my apoc-gear. I think a civvie can own one...you just can't wear it out in public. Same with body armour. You can own it...but you can't get caught wearing it.

Hope all of this info helped. If you have any more questions...just let me know.

Actually it helps a lot.

I have already done the classes, did them back in the early 90's so I could get my big game license, but never got around to getting the PAL. I've had the papers in hand several times over the years, but never got around to filling them out (LOL, one of those I'll get around to it things, I guess)

Good to know that the armor, helmet, pistols and AR's are all legal though. Thanks

Does this restriction also apply to semiautomatic pistols?

And how is this "pinning" process done? And undone?

Yes. Most autoloading rifles are restricted but all handguns are restricted. This includes revolvers and even single shot handguns.

"Pinning" is done a bunch of different ways. You will have to get ahold of a pinned mag and see how it can be unpinned.

https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopexd.asp?id=90&bc=no

Buy these mags. Some are pinned and others are lanced. Lanced means that two parts of the magazine have been cut and punched inside to stop the follower at 5 rounds capacity. Cut out on of these metal flaps and use the hole to punch the other flap flat again...and presto...you have a full 30 round mag.

If it's a pinned mag...just drill out the pin. You will have to remove the base plate and the spring to get the metal bits out...but it's not that hard to do.

I apologize for my lack of clarity. I know that handguns are restricted. The restriction that I was referring to was actually that of magazine capacity.

Oh...sorry. All restricted rifles (and most unrestricted autoloading rifles) are limited to 5 round magazines. This includes weapons like the SKS or the Ruger Mini 14.

Handguns are limited to 10 round magazines. Now you can get 10 round AR15 magazines which are stamped as "pistol" magazines. These are legal in Canada only because of the LAR-15 rifle which is classed as a pistol.

Any magazine that holds more than 5 or 10 rounds is considered to be "high capacity" and is therefor prohibited by law.
