Yes, it is always a good idea to keep some form of blunt, heavy instrument next to the bed.
I only have a hammer at the moment. Although, if someone (rather than a Zed) breaks into your house, and you go to defend yourself with the object next to your bed, then you should say that you found the object randomly, because if you say you kept it there for this kind of thing, then they can prosecute you.
Well, that is the case in England, anyway. Also, if it is a Zed, then I don't think you'll get into trouble...

Z.E.R.O., I have an ideal, maybe not a good one. Since you are in England, what about a Cricket bat, it would give you more distance and using the edge would leave a nice crease in someone? Decorate it with some drawings or decals and hang it up near the bed as a decoration.
