When Zs attack and you're not at home!
Aug 7 2009, 12:21 AM EDT
The purpose of this thread is for everyone to consider and alternate plan. Lets say that I have an upcoming trip to Europe, or I am boarding a cruise ship for a 10 day vacation, or I'm just visiting relatives in a different state, put yourself in those positions and think about what your plan would be when you're away from everything you know. Where there is no friends, no back up, and no weapons! Could you survive a Zombie invation in a less than ideal enviornment? Could you find the way to a more secure enviornment?Let me see some ideas! |

I'll start with the visiting relatives since it be the most likely scenario I'd have to deal with.My fartherest relatives are in New York(wich thanks to certain laws I wouldn't be able to bring firearms except maybe my shotgun).I'd be at my great aunt & uncle's house most likely,so I'd try getting everyone(My aunt, uncle, brother, cousin and her husband)there to Mile's house(a close family friend). My aunt keeps tons of board games, puzzles and non perishables we could take with us,and tons of things(bats,shovels,pipes,2x4s and my uncle has a bow)we could use as weapons till we get there, then I'd try get everyone to go in the back of my pic-up or in my aunt's van.The reason I'd go to Mile's is 1.He lives kind far from town which is good since thats where most of the Zs will be 2.He grows grapes and strawberries, and theres tons of deer and other wildlife nearby to hunt 3.He has LOTS of guns(hunting rifles, shotguns, handguns)and ammo to go with it. 4.Lots furniture and lumber to barricade with 5.The stairs woud be easy to destroy, and they have ladders we can use to get up and down. Not the best plan or much of one,and still working on what to do if this plan dosen't work, but this is what I got so far.

First, I keep at least one Budget Survival Kit in all my vehicles, so the basic survival gear is always there when I need it.IF I drive on a state to state trip and I"m in my vehicle I will usually carry my BOB and a pistol (3 mags), 1 long gun (rifle (6 mags) OR shotgun) and about 200 rounds for each. IF I go in someone else's vehicle, say the In-Law's - I will reduce this to a small backpack with a Budget Kit and a pistol, 3 mags & 100 rounds. Flying is different.... First, I always check my bag as it allows me to take more gear and on domestic flights that aren't x-rayed. Doesn't help if I get jammed in route, but does give me something to work with at my destination. IF it's for an extended vacation (say 2 weeks), I will take (in my checked luggage) a "Water bottle" size survival kit, Buck Nighthawk Knife, a revolver (less exciting when inspected), 3 speedloaders and 1 box of ammo. IF I'm flying just for a short term stay, I will take (in my checked bag), a mini-kit (Altoids can size), a good pocket knife and a flashlight (3v Surefire). Side note: I've actually been working on a mini-kit that is airline "approved" items that you can take on board, but it's still in "process". more coming.... : ) |

For international travel, that's the tough one......I checked the Carnival Cruise line security protocols a bit ago and they x-ray your bags, just like flying international. No weapons policy on all ships. I bet everyone else does too. There is a provision for Diver's Knives, but they have to be checked with the Security Officer and checked out & back in when you go diving. So I don't think that's much use. International travel would pretty much take any survival kits you had or at least make it a hassle for you to take. I haven't tried this personally, but I'd love to see if security would approve a mini-kit size one in checked baggage. I'd say it was a MAYBE on this one. So about the only gear you could take with you would be clothing and very basic survival stuff like lighter, US army canteen set, etc. I'd have to improvise all weaponry onboard the craft. Not ideal. Also see thread http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/thread/3151576/Far+from+home... for some other ideas. |

Well, when you do finish the airline approved mini-kit do let us know, ok? I have been thinking about your posts and I wonder if the way to go would be to search for a place that that the necessary equipment on every city you plan to visit. A lot of times they have the info on the internet and you can find them and mark them on the map, then you can just make your way there in an emergency and find what you want OR making a list of reliable people by countries and cities that might give you shelter if things do happen.

"I think the map is a good idea, but I think the research you suggest is even better. I didn't think about doing that too. you could map quest where you were going to be and then map quest for others like Uhaul/Ryder truck rentals, car rentals, Walmart, Sporting Goods Stores, gas stations, etc. It would take some work, but be worth it. then when you get there, do some local footwork. Best idea, might just be research the area and having a plan. Hit a Truck rental first for a vehicle and then off to the rest. |
