My Survival Plan:

A Really Bad Scenario:

This is my long term survival plan in a really bad scenario, this means that the zombies are everywhere in less than a month, and they are not totally stupid, are not slow, and are not weak.

.
BLACK means total destruction
GRAY means dead
RED means infected

ZOMBIES:

  1. They are as fast as the person they where before "dying".
  2. They are as strong as the person they where before "dying".
  3. Intelligence may vary but they are usually not smarter than a 5 years old.
  4. They can open doors and stuff like that but they can't unlock one nor write in a keyboard or stuff that requires big amounts of coordination.
  5. They look like a normal human, but the are paler than us, and may have a big nasty bite somewhere in their body.
  6. They can smell humans really easy, and are attracted by unnatural sounds.

WORLD CONTEXT

1st Day: X City has the first infection.
3rd Day: Most of X Country's cities are infected.
10th Day: All the world's major cities are infected.
15th Day: All the big cities in the world are infected and the major cities are exterminated (+95% of population dead or zombied).

FIRST DAYS STRATEGY

As soon as I hear about the first city, I am going to an archery store to buy some bows, crossbows (no waiting time to buy them, if I try to buy guns, by the moment i get them (if I do) it will be to late) and lots of arrows. If "The Panic" hasn't arrived yet, then I'm going to buy lots of canned food, seeds and survival gear (including zombie killing gear).

I'm going to call my zombie-hater friends and tell them to call their friends (while trying to maintain a good male/female ratio) and meet in a predesignated rural area (near a river would be the best), where we are going to read some survival books and practice a LOT with the bows and crossbows, this first 4-5 days we are going to survive in the outside (or at least try), then, if possible, we are going to eat from the food we bought to recover strength (if any of us own a gun then he/she needs to buy lots of ammo before its too late).

While the major cities in the world are collapsing by a mixture of panic and zombie apocalypse, we are fortifying our position to protect ourselves from raiders more than zombies (we are on a rural area where the pop is not enough to be zombie-dangerous).

After the panic is replaced by dead people and assuming we have +30 alive people (if not, then take a look to the WHAT IF section at the end) then we have to send a scrounger team (4-10 people) to look for anything useful, as well for construction materials to make a fortified settlement, this may take a few trips downtown, and if during those trips we find any survivors then even better, the more people we have the more capable we are (not likely to find old or weak people).

SETTLING DOWN

If we made it trough the first months, then we need to start thinking about the future, so we are going to have to become self-sufficient, this means that we cannot depend on the abandoned cities to live, so the first thing to make is to find some seeds, this may be available in botanic stores (I don't think that people are going to search for wheat seeds during the panic), although this is something that the scrounger teams should look for, always, and you should buy some before the panic strikes. After that try to cultivate them, take care of them like you would take care of a ton of gold in the pre-Zed days.

To cultivate the seed, you are going to need to establish an outer perimeter and fortify it (you don't want riders to steal your food), it doesn't need as much protection as the settlement, but you should still protect it.

So, you have shelter, water (river nearby), food (the seeds and some animals around), weapons (mostly bows). What you need to do next is to grow, some people may leave the settlement to go somewhere else and establish a new colony (this is highly encouraged), keep growing and hopefully you will repopulate the planet.

PS: The last stage WILL take hundreds of years

WHAT IF...

...The first outbreak is in YOUR city.

First, you won't have time to buy weapons, so you must take whatever can kill a person in one smash/hit to the head (like a pan or a baseball bat), and fortify your house (if a human can't get in, then a zombie much less). Then wait for the panic to cease. After that zombies will go for the last people alive and the easiest to kill, this means they are going to attack the people that is stuck in the highways. now is the time to move up. be really careful, you should also look for survivors to help you get to your BOL.

...Zombies are intelligent enough to find your small fort.

Now lets say zombies are getting smarter, and started looking for people in rural areas. Lets say they found your fort/settlement and are about 100-300 zombies. you are probably thinking "Oh god we are screwed" but no, you are not screwed (unless you didn't think this could happen). close the door, barricade the windows. the best thing to do is attack them from the roof, or make a distraction to escape (its even better if you made a back door/tunnel for this kind of situation).

...You didn't have enough people to send a scrounger team.

In that case, is better to stay where you are, but if you really need something (like medicaments), then is better for all of you to go together, because probably sending 3-4 people alone to scavenge is probably a death sentence, it is pretty risky to loose people if your group is small, which can happen if you go all together too but the chances to get out alive are better. Feel free to discus about this, is what I would do.

...Your scrounger team never got back.

Well if you have few people left then you should follow the above options, but if you are in a big group then you should send a rescue team to the last known position.

... Raiders attacked you settlement and you were left with nothing.

Lets say they took most of your stuff including weapons, the last thing you should do is to seek for revenge. And there's nothing you can do about the missing stuff, you are pretty much at the beginning again. But you can avoid this by building a subterranean storage

I'm sorry the order is the other way around (<==) but I'm too lazy to fix it.

If you have any suggestions post them.

As soon as I get my writing "license" I will write this in the user survival plans

Shelter Construction Methods

LONG TERM SHELTERS (Planning to live there)

ADOBE

The best way to build a long term shelter without the need to scavenge is Adobe, no, not Adobe the software company, adobe the construction material. adobe is one of the oldest construction methods, it is mostly seen in the desert due to its capability to maintain inside temperature.

adobe house

Adobe is made is a mixture of clay (mud) and straw that can be shaped to make bricks, or it can be used to build walls without the need to shape it (but this method needs razor wire or something to prevent the wall from falling down).

adobe wallTo build a wall you are gonna need:

  • Clay (lots of clay)
    • To make your own clay you have to dig a hole, extract the dirt and remove rocks with a strainer.
    • Then you have to mix 1 part of water with 2 parts of dirt, and you're done
    • You can also make bricks only with clay, but they are not as resistant as adobe bricks
  • Straw
    • You can use the one that's left from harvesting wheat or you can use dry grass (only use green grass if extremely necessary)
  • Around 10% Sand
    • Not necessary to explain this one and it is not a completely necessary ingredient

Once you have collected the materials you are gonna mix the to make something like the picture below:

If the brick fall apart then this is what you need to do:

put adobe on a jar (less than half jar) add water and shake it a lot, let the jar sit overnight, then at the next morning you are going to have 3 layers: Water, Clay, Sand. make sure that you have around 50% to 70% percent of sand(remember, dirt already have sand, so you don't want to add 70% of sand to the dirt), if not then you are going to have to add more sand to the mix (now, where are you gonna get sand? its up to you, but you can repeat this process to separate the sand from the clay and re-mix them in the right proportion)

After you have made the bricks you have to keep them dry for a few days. and voilà.

PALISADE / STOCKADE

I've never actually built one, but it may be a good idea if you are in a wooden area.

If you are not a professional then be really careful while doing this.

Fist thing to do to build a palisade is to cut down some tress (duh), this is probably the most dangerous part, because the tree may fall over you or a friend (remember in some countries/states is illegal to cut down a tree without the proper license/permit), the trees you choose should have a similar diameter (4 - 8 inches will work depending on what you want to build)

The first kind of palisade i will tech you to do is the vertical one, for this you are going to need a lot of trunks with a similar diameter, then you are going to lie them down one next to the other, (if you don't have nails or cord, then I suggest you to use the other kind of palisade) then you are going to take 2 or 3 more trunks and place them at 90 degrees from the others, if you use 2 then you put the first near the top and the other near the bottom, (if you use 3 then you are going to put the third in the middle). After that, you nail or tie the horizontal trunks with the vertical ones.

Then you are going to dig a trench deep enough to cover 30% of the trunks, once you have made it then you raise the palisade and cover the trench with the dirt you removed to made the trench.

The other palisade is the horizontal one, this one (IMO) is a little easier to make, you don't have to worry about cutting down the trunks to make them shorter. In fact, the more variety of sizes you have (excluding the diameter) the better.

First, dig some holes in a straight line and raise a few trunk on them (30% rule again), this ones should be as tall as the palisade you want to build.

Now, depending on the diameter of the trunks you have you are going to dig more holes near the ones you previously dug. Like this: ": : : : : : :". and plant more trunks in those holes.

Once you are finished, you are going to lay the rest of the trunks in between the raised trunks one over the other to make the palisade.

PS: You may want to cover the open spaces with mud to protect the palisade a bit more.

You can also make a wall with the last technique with a few modifications to keep warm inside. it should look like this:

Wooden wall
The thing in in between the trunks is earth, feel free to make it as tall as you need.

MEDIUM TERM SHELTERS (One or two weeks)

UNDERGROUND SHELTER (self explanatory):

I'm not good at short and mid term shelters

SHORT TERM SHELTERS (One or two days)

I'm not good at short and mid term shelters
You know, you should take a look at the SAS survival handbook
(contact me and I'll give you a link).

Other Useful Things

  1. When you make a fire, make sure you put some rocks around it or below it (do NOT use wet or porous rocks, they can explode) and put them near you at night, or you cna also dig a hole, put them there, cover them with a layer of earth and sleep there.
  2. You can boil water inside a bamboo stem, angle it across a fire and you're done. (do not let it over the fire if its dry)
  3. More to come...
