I'm 28, a father of four, former MMN3 USN, current general store owner, hunter, fisher, camper, and all that good stuff. I enjoy gun shows, target shooting, and long walks on the beach. Really all of this doesn't mean much and won't tell you much about me. So the following is a rant that should give you more insight into who I am.
I see a lot of people making these huge bug out bags. I don't understand that, but I suppose if you live in the city surviving off the land will be much harder, though I honestly don't see many people surviving long in the cities at all. Alone, all I need is a knife and I can survive. Without a knife it would be harder but not impossible.
I also see a bunch of solo survivors, have fun going insane. I don't even understand the point in living if your alone. Just an opinion but I think a lot of those guys are just big talkers, and if they have the skills to do it(some really do) they won't do it for long.
The problem I face is two fold. One, I'm not out to survive, I'm out to live. There's a big difference. People get lost and survive in the woods for days or weeks, but they don't live there. The end of the world is not something you can run from, or await rescue from. Its the end of the world. No one can survive forever, but you can live until old age. The main difference is attitude. When you're out to survive you don't think about others(unless there's a few close people), you don't think about tomorrow, you're only worried about today. When you're living you build, laugh, love, cry, everything you do in a normal day currently. My goal is to live.
My second problem is my family. I have four kids and a wife. This is why I've already joined a group and made a plan. I can't protect my family alone(not just talking about zombies here). I have to create a place where my children can grow and learn and have children of their own. Its seems that only a few people think about that. You might survive a year, but if you want to breath for more than a year or so you better have a plan to live.
That's what my plan is, to live. People criticize it saying, well you haven't thought about this or that, but that's the way I'm keeping it for the most part. Its simple, there will be problems but life is full of problems. Anyone that thinks they can plan out even most of what they'll do won't last long. I'm going to attempt to rebuild a community. will there be problems, yes. Will there be unexpecteds, yes. Could the whole thing come falling in on our heads, yes. But you won't get anything if you don't try.
This is an opinion and should be regarded as such. But I wanted to talk about people's gun selections.
First semi-auto handguns, I noticed a lot of people have selected handguns as their choice weapon. Let me put it this way, when has a professional solider ever gun out to battle with a handgun as his choice weapon? Never. The reason is that they are not good weapons over all, when compared to rifles and carbines. The differences between the rifle and handgun are plain. Some of you may not understand the difference with a carbine. Although different people use the term differently, a carbine is usually a rifle with a short barrel that uses pistol ammo. While rifle and handgun backups are a good combo, the carbine bridges the gap between the two.
First the Zombies are not armored enemies(usually) so the need for a high-powered rifle is not there, unless taking them out from a far. Second a carbine weighs only a few pounds more than a handgun and is faster to draw if it is slung. The carbine is more accurate and deadly at a longer range due to the longer barrel. It uses the same ammo so there is no weight increase there. Furthermore they also come in semi automatic, but with up to 30 round clips instead of 9.
However, I don't think a semiautomatic weapon would be a good idea, even if you set up a generator(wind or solar) their will be no electricity anywhere else, therefore your life will be similar to those of the mid-1800s but with zombies trying to kill you. This means no replacement parts, and although a well maintained gun can last for hundreds if not maybe thousands of years, part of maintaining a gun is not shooting it. For these reason I recommend lever action carbines, or lever/single action rifles with a revolver as backup, as they are easy to maintain and repair, and also very dependable. But again this is just my opinion.

"I hate shotguns and either it'll be way overpowered(50 cal slug) or do nothing. A shot buck or bird aint going to blow off a zombies head, and at distance your odds of hitting the head are just as good as not hitting it. I just can't imagine a shotguns being useful."
I totally and completely disagree.

"Yeah I really should check my profile more often. Though I didn't log on for a long time, which is odd cause I was gone for almost a month when he posted it."
He's banned :]

I see people listing some strange supplies. Mind you, you need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, which is the earth being sent back into the dark ages. And not recovering until well after you is dead. One thing that I take issue with is Toilet Paper, seriously? You’re going to bring toilet paper? You can't think of anything better? First, it aint going to last that long and second you're going to have to get used to living without it, better to start now than wait. Second are these huge first aid kits. Don't waste your time. Just bring a standard first aid kit and a survival first aid book. Only use the kit if you absolutely have to. For everything else use natural fixes, once the bandaids and stuff are gone, that's it, make it last.
I suggest these items instead. Seeds, cuttings, and sprouts. Maybe a fully grown aloe plant also, with the toilet paper gone, you'll have plenty of room. You can't live off of Twinkies forever, so settle quickly and start growing food right away. A rod and reel is also good. Many people may not know how to fish, so here's tip: get a treble hook, some lye soap or blood bait(you should have access to both if your raising or hunting animals), put the bait on the hook and cast it. Let it sink to the bottom and wait till a catfish bites, its never taken me more than an hour on a bad day in a bad spot. That's it, in the meantime you can be doing other things, like mending a net, making rope, or whatever, just stay close catfish can be strong and it won't take long for them to steal your rod.
