I am going to start this thread, hoping it wil not boil into arguments, but I wanted to know how you feel about rail guns or EMP guns.
Being the engineer that I am I have played with a design or two, but nothing as mobile that can be carried on a person, mostly because of power required, too much weight in capacitors and/or batteries. I have seen some plans online that seem to work well though.
Just curious what you thought about this...

I always found the subject interesting, as a fellow engineer. I believe I read somewhere about the military having been working on one but the materials it was crafted from just couldnt hold up to the heat or charge and it was completely destroyed every shot.

Are you trying to propell the shot with the charge or charge the shot itself? Perhaps if it had some sort of internal chamber where it could generate the charge then feed it to the projectile? Something like that would have to be mounted of a vehicle or stand though..

The designs I have played with have used staged pulses. Basically 3 posts in the chamber, post one goes hot and pulls the rod, and then post 2 goes hot to pull, while post one switches polarity. Then post 3 goes hot, post 1 switches off, and post 2 switches polarity. There are a few other designs I have seen, but this one has been the most accurate so far as I can tell out of all that I have read.

I saw the Israeli army was working a very large design. It was using a semi trailer as the 'gun' and steel I-beams as the projectiles. It could launch over a few miles, but very innaccurate...

I like the idea, certainly, but even the navy doesn't have a fieldable working model yet. Good, though, if you could land a couple of shots right in the middle of a horde...the force from that....Christ.

Of course. Although I will be just as content with a crane and a few cars, dumpsters, or anything else. From the sounds of the Israeli model, I wouldnt 'use' it for anything but trying to thin out an entire town of skin-jobs

Yeah, I didn't quite understand the concept either, unless it was used as a battering ram, maybe?

Nah, a rail gun is meant to be.. well.. just that, a gun. Though the power they generate would shatter any door, and probably take down the entire building. Automobiles = best battering rams. And if your inside? Fire axe, crowbar, shotgun... take your pick!

Back to the subject of rail guns. If the military can't perfect the idea, I doubt we can. An interesting subject that is a bit too off for us, although we shouldn't stop thinking on it. It would be more than enough to take down any skin job (or any hoarde of them) and to discourage the raiders from trying to take down your camp / hide-out. So.. I endorse this idea..

MOAR DESIGNS, IDEAS, THINK-TANKS! Let's show the militaries of the world whose boss by building a better mouse tra-- err.. Rail gun. Then we could sell it, build our own fort, and live safely with our generators and personal satalites to keep up the intarweb / page during Z-day =3.

'Twas my idea.. so I'll just be taking 10% of all future sales and transactions if you don't mind? :D

Looks good on paper but not a weapon portable enough to even mount on a tank (as of yet). Of course all things are subject to change...The general Electric Mini Gun for instance can be fired like Jesse Ventura handled one in Predator.....IF you can carry all the ammo to sustain fire with.....IF you can carry the Automobile size battery it will take to sustain power to keep the barrels churning. (The tiney battery they showed for Venturas was faked ) It takes a much larger battery to keep one firing. So unless you are build like the ROCK or VENTURA or HULK HOGAN then just go to the back of Popular Science and check out the two thousand dollar continuous wave gas lazers and buy the proper wavelength protective goggels and set back an relax knowing NOBODY is going to mess with you. YOU CAN DO THE FOLLOWING.... Blind the enemy two miles away. set their clothes on fire at one mile away. Burn down wooden structures a quarter mile away. Start brush fires to direct the enemy in the direction you would like them to travel. Blind armored vehicles drivers, gunners and commanders by putting the laser on their periscopes ; then they will be helpless to drive their vehicles or shoot their main gun or do anthing else.... THESE LAZERS ARE NOT THE LITTLE POINTERS USED IN A SCHOOL CLASS OR BUSINESS MEETING. gooooooood luck go get em Tiger!
