First id like to say, that the m16 family of combat rifels gets a bad rap. In 1957 when Gene Stoner developed the prototype, and sold the rights to Colt, it was leaps and bounds ahead of its time. Haveing said that, it wasent without problems. 1.) the weapon lacked a foreword assist to aid in jam's. 2.) the prototype used a celaner burning rod type powder verses the dirtyer ball powder that it was fielded with (which caused the weapon to be fielded without cleaning kits). 3.) it laked a heat resistant crome lined barrel, yet was a fully automatic weapon which led to catastrophic heat failiures. It wasnt untill the advent of the M-16 A2, that the weapon was equiped with a foreward assist, crome lined barrel, and was finally made into a burst weapon, that all the "bugs" were worked out. In my 10 years as an opperator with the U.S.Army, i NEVER experianced a jam, or heat related failer of anny kind, nor have i ever heard a first hand account of any of the affore mentioned occurances. I suggest that you, the individual, go to a range, and ues the weapon youreself, before you decide to poo-poo the weapon based solely on the advice of an AK junkie who probly has never even fired the weapon. Thier is no other weapon i would trust my life with than the M-16...(but thats only my opnion.)
