After talking to Mars during the law lecture, I realised that no one really likes to cooperate.
Say you establish some sort of counsel of sorts, or maybe a leader over a whole community. Now wait a second. What does this change? Have your neighbors ever really helped you? How well do you know them? Will they help you now? Would you help them? Point is, even if you can establish a leadership, unless it's some sort of colony style(which doesn't come up until much later), you're going to have run-of-the-mill blocks just banning together, and they're certainly not going to want to help Bob there who's starving because he lucked out and it was his grocery day when SHTF. So how do you solve this "every man for himself" mindset and actually get true cooperation?

I know the zed wiki isn't really a place to use as personal advertising space, but I recently got saddled with a heck of a project.
Zombie Colony is quite simply, the zombie game that lot of ZSDW members have wanted to build for several years now. A survival-based, multiplayer FPS with strategy elements. But we're pretty short on actual people to make models for HL2, maps and such, so if anybody could lend a hand or reference us a good animator / modeler or source of free stuff, it'd help immeasurably. Of course, you can also comment about the good and bad aspects of the idea here, as I post updates on the concept.

Its several years post Apoc, you and your family are still alive but are barely hanging on. Things is beyond desperate , you have seen things...and done things you never thought you would. You have seen people kill others just to eat them !
Few days ago you found a cache of food that a group hid, you took what you could carry back to your family and was the first meat they had in days. You know it was stupid but you went back to get some more, now you're sneaking away with some more when all at once you hear a shout..."Stop put the gun down", about 30 yds away a guy is standing pointing a rifle at you If you surrender they are sure to find the stolen food in your pack, you know what people do to food thieves in this world, maybe they will torture you into telling where your family and the rest of it is too. You are armed with a double 12 shotgun loaded with buckshot, you are right next to a big tree, maybe you can throw yourself behind it and shoot this guy before he shoots you. You have practiced this and you know even if he has his finger on the trigger a person reflex can be slow enough that you have a chance. You wonder why he hasn't shot already, maybe the gun isn't even loaded ! Lots of people with guns and no ammo, matter of fact you got your shotgun..and everything else he had from a guy you got the drop on and put it down when you pointed an empty 30 30 at him. Maybe he just wants to talk to you and see if he can help you.....From what you have seen thats sure not very likely..... Maybe he hasn't shot you because he wants to march you back to camp and butcher you there for dinner, you have seen that before So do you disarm and hand over your shotgun and trust a stranger not to harm you or do you take your chances and try to kill him ?...What would you do?

Reminder: The Walking Dead Season 2, Part 2 starts this Sunday - 2/12
You know, I am always curious. Would you feel comfortable sleeping next to a potential zombie? WTF is a potential zombie? In the Walking Dead, everyone is infected by the zombie condition and healthy or people who seem healthy do sometimes die in their sleep. In which case, if your spouse or love one dies in their sleep and you didn't know about it, you could possibly have an extremely rude wake up call. There is a news anchor here in NC who worked out continuously and ate fairly good, however when he was doing a news story about 360 degree MRIs, it was discovered he was very close to having a catastrophic heart attack at age 37 and in reasonably apparent good health. If he would have died quietly in his sleep without his wife knowing in The Walking Dead, bad things could happen. So far, I have not seen any segregated or guarded sleeping together arrangements in The Walking Dead. I know I would if I knew that everyone has the zombie condition. Would you? |

listen, first of all in a zombie apocalypse i don't think you would have enough time to even make your own ammo, zombies hear the noise first thing in their head is the words food. be smart and think about it, would you really have enough time to make your own ammunition if your house is swarmed by zombies. Another thing, if you can't fight close up in a zombie apocalypse you are not gonna even live long enough to see the next sunrise, look it is simple you need to know how to do close up combat, if not you are just gonna be killed. My guns are always gonna be hand guns, even though they do not have well aim, i can still use them when i am being over run, and i could use them close up. S sniper has it's advantages, yeah sure it has it's sharp aim, and has a high velocity in it's shots, but what are you gonna do when the zombies find a way to sneak behind you. There is always the possibility of using it as a club or something, but i prefer my guns with no damage. I will admit that having a sniper is always good for zombie defense, it could be useful. With you alone not so much, but if you have a team then it might do some good. Honestly, in a zombie apocalypse you would have to know how to use your feet for any quick escape, there is no time for hot wiring car, even though you might be in track or cross country, you will run out of breath. Since zombies are dead i believe they don't have the need to stop for breath. But back to topic, it is always good to also carry something durable to use against zombies, but even though i might also use a chainsaw, even though i may not live long enough, It is important to know how to survive in any situation of a zombie apocalypse. Give me a scenario and give me three objects to use, i will pick the best ones and tell you how to escape or at least live longer, will you accept my challenge?

It has oft been debated, on this site and others, what the "best" caliber is for a defensive handgun round. We hear terms like 'stopping power' and 'kinetic energy' and 'harmonic pulse frequency'...
LOL - Okay, maybe not that last one. Seriously though, I just came across an interesting article that pretty much lays it out. To put it simply, unless you hit the brain or upper spinal column, there is NOT ONE single caliber that can be relied on to instantly incapacitate an assailant. Shots to center mass may incapacitate, may even kill, but it has been shown that even in cases where the heart has been destroyed, there is still enough oxygen in the brain for an assailant to continue to act for 10-15 seconds. Fortunately for us, most people have a proclivity towards falling down when shot, no matter what you shoot them with or where you hit them, most people will instinctively fall down upon realizing that they've been shot, but what are the key words there? MOST PEOPLE. First of all, the target has to be aware that he's been shot, and second of all he has to be one of those people with that standard proclivity towards falling down. No matter whether you hit them with a .22 or a .45, some people will be so enraged, drugged out, or just numb from the shock of getting shot in the first place, that they will fail to notice that they've been wounded, even mortally wounded. Or for the same reasons, they may realize that they've been wounded, but just not give a sh!t, determined to take you down with them even if they die trying. Now statistically, it doesn't seem to matter whether you use a sissy round like a .22 rimfire, or a big old ass kicker like a .45 ACP, the reliable one shot drop is a myth perpetuated by hollywood that cannot be relied upon in real life. How would you deal with this scenario.
You are in your bedroom, sleeping by yourself or with your wife or your girlfriend or in this case ladies, husband. You(if sleeping by your self) and your spouse are sound asleep. Lights in the bedroom are off. The room is black with darkness and silence. Nothing can be seen in the room except the slight light coming from the bedroom window, and your own hands in front of your face. The bedroom door is shut. Suddenly you hear the handle on the door knob jiggle. The slight sound put's you in a half asleep state and causes you toss in your bed. You then hear something bumping and rubbing up against the door from the opposite side. You awake slowly, with your head still on the pillow, it turns towards the door's direction in your bedroom. You can hardly see a thing in front of you. You only hear "something" on the other side of the door. The door then slams open and hits the wall. *boom* You jolt up sitting in bed. You hear something fall to the floor whizzing and moaning. You stumble out of bed and turn on the nearest light. The light begins to cast way the darkness. You look at the direction of the door. And rub your eyes quickly with one hand. A figure begins to form within your eyes. You realize something has manage to enter your home. On the floor getting up in front of you, is a wounded man in his mid 20's. His arm is heavily wounded. As he stumbles to get up, blood from his arm trickles on the floor. The bite mark in his arm catches your eye..."this is no normal wound", comes to your mind. His face turns in your direction. His pupils dilated. His outer eyes filled with blood and dirt. His face is pale. His mouth drops, and releases stagnant drool. Out comes sound like someone is exhaling from their mouth. What do you do? (Not everyone may have weapons in their bedroom.) After the intruder has been dealt with, what do you next?

SO HERE IT IS!
It's been almost 3 months since the outbreak began and you and your companions (If you have any) have decided to try to join forces with a local group who occupy your local shopping mall! The group consists of 10 men, 11 women and 4 children, they are a relatively well armed group. They've reinforced the doors and windows to be able to withstand 10 maybe 20 zombies at most. The shopping mall doesn't attract much attention to zombies. On your way to the main door you only come across one walker, you quickly dispatch of it and continue moving. Once you reach the main gates, a voice shouts, "What do you want?" Puzzled by where the voice came from you step back and look around, to notice that there is one man guarding the entrance from the roof. You tell the man of your willingness to join up with the group. After a long discussion they decide to let you in on one condition, you must have your weapons taken off of you for 12 hours (1 rifle of your choice, 1 sidearm of your choice, 1 melee weapon of you choice). You agree to this condition and get let in. Once inside you and your companions settle down in the sporting store and rest for the night. In the morning you get a terrifying wake up by the sounds of alarms! You quickly rush to see what the issue is to find out a child has been mucking around in the control room and set off all of the alarms in the entire mall! One of the men hands back you and your companions weapons. Only 20 minutes later you get word from the watch guard that a horde of over 80 zombies have heard the alarms and are storming the gates! Knowing that the doors and windows will not defend against such a large horde, what is your plan to survive this zombie siege? The scenario is only limited by what supplies and stores are located in your local mall. What is your choice of rifle, sidearm and melee weapon of your choice? If you need anymore information just tell me!

Um... I did a rewrite of this page back in August of 2010. As quoted from my edit thread, I included, "a new section on the Ferro Rods suggested in the previous thread, but also sections on other commercial emergency fire starters and several "bush craft" style fire starters, such as magnifying lenses, bow drills, hand drills, push plows and any other methods that I can dig up."
Now all that information is gone. What happened to it?

Hey guys, it's been awhile...I haven't been on here steadily for like 6 months! (Even though nobody probably noticed!)
But over christmas and end of summer, I received some neat stuff.... I got like 14 MRE meals from this lady my mom worked with that got out of the National Guard. She said she'll give me the rest too, which she has a lot more of! And for Christmas, I got a I.O. Ak-47 synthetic stock. I love the thing, it was only like $500 and I bought it from CTD. The magazine it came with was garbage, it didn't feed the round high enough so it didn't fit above the feed ramp. However, that was taken care of with a Tapco Ak47 mag which works perfectly! And I was wondering if it would be worth it to get some type of optics for the rifle. It already has the side scope mount part which I will need to buy the other part so I can have the pictanny rails. And what are some other good upgrades/additions for my new tool? And I also got a new knife from my brother. It's the Ka-Bar ZK War Sword. I love the thing, it came pretty dang sharp. I then had the intention to sharpen it even more after I almost shaved my finger right off. It now is razor sharp. I really like the sheath and it comes with a little multi-purpose knife for preparing food or skinning animals. So let's hear what you guys have to say about this stuff, you can even post some updates about your recent gear!

So my friend owns over 30 guns (mostly handguns, shotguns, and rifles) and 5,000 rounds of ammunition total. He also has a large knife collection and several axes of multiple sizes. In addition, he has a really loud sound system which has forced him to sound-proof the entire house with lead. The windows are also sound-proof. the house is on the outer corner of a street that curves at a 90 degree angle. Anybody have suggestions for improving it as a post-apocalyptic hideout?

I saw a National Geographic Special about families that are preparing for bad times coming. It is interesting how different people have come up with their way of surviving bad times and the reaon for those times (none of which involved Zs.
I personally don't think that prepping a place in a populated area is worth the time or money. A good BOB that will enable you to get out into the countryside to a more defendable place is the only solution I see for those who are unlucky enough to live in an urban area. Two of the groups are doing that but the other two are just stockpiling for some else as far as I see. Any comments on the show or my evaluation? P.S. the show did convince my wife that learn to shoot and practicing the skill is a good thing, something I had been unable to do! :)

Ok,I have finally decided it's time to get a gun. Being in the UK, the easiest to get should be a shotgun. Tomorrow I take step one- buy and fit a police approved gun case. I am going to keep an informal record of time and costs involved and i'll update as I progress.
PS I was prompted to do this after an offer from my father to give me his two guns if I get a shotgun certificate, as he no longer uses them due to poor health, so the extra gun I get will be just for me. Update- 22-08-11 Ok, got a 3 gun wall mounted case - £140.00 so far. Update- 24-08-11 Application posted, with 4 photos and cheque for £50.00, expected waiting time according to licencing authority website 6-8 weeks. Update- 31-08-11 Confirmation of receipt from police authority. My application will now be vetted, references and background checked and a home visit arranged by firearms officer. Update- 12-10-11 Spoke to firearms officer today. Background checks complete and they have told me to expect a call to arrange my home visit from a local constable. Update- 26-10-11 Called this morning by local constable. Visit to be tomorrow morning, should last about 15 minutes. Update 27-10-11 Visited today and approved for certificate. Now another 6-8 week wait for the document Update 16-11-11 Certificate arrived today, a little quicker than expected.
