Finally got around to using the homebrew kit my father in law sent us over the holidays. Its (supposed to be) a hefeweisen, and we used an extract vice grain.
Hopefully it doesn't suck, but it's one step closer to being able to make real beer without the use of a cheater can of ready-wort.

| LWJ2009 | The Best General-Purpose Survival Firearm is a Good Handgun Round 2 | 19 | Today, 12:07 AM EDT by cavscout888 | ||||

Thread started: Thursday, 9:49 AM EDT

I am going to rework this once very popular thread that LJ created last year. I would like to tweak it though and say that the best Survival Firearm for the first few hours of an event is a good handgun. Most people have a sidearm on their person or in a vehicle, and it is that weapon that your going to trust your life and that of your loved one's until you can get home and get to your inventory.
If your like me your long guns are locked up and kept at home unless your out in the boonies playing, which the majority of the time I am not. My companion now is a Smith and Wesson M&P40, that is my pistol of choice to carry me through the first few hours of an event. I can conceal it easily and not make myself an obvious target for LE or anybody else, as compared to a rifle or shotgun. I have three loaded magazines with me, so I do have enough ammo to get to where I need to go and back and not worry about running out. So what do you trust your life with until you can get to your full inventory? What do you think about the fact that a pistol is going to be the most important defensive weapon for the first few hours?

Hey everyone, if you're in Virginia, or around the Virginia area, you might be interested in this- Side note, if you're not in the Virginia area, it might be worth checking your state's website to see if they have anything similar.
"The holiday exempts 22 categories of smaller items, including batteries, flashlights, bottled water, tarps, duct tape, cell-phone chargers, smoke detectors, and first aid kits. As long as each item costs $60 or less, it is exempt from sales and use tax. Portable generators and inverters priced at $1,000 or less are also exempt during the holiday. For a full list of tax-exempt products, answers to frequently asked questions, and guidelines for consumers and retailers, visit www.tax.virginia.gov. The 2013 General Assembly agreed that, beginning with the 2014 hurricane sales tax holiday, chainsaws selling for $350 or less, and chainsaw accessories selling for $60 or less per item would be included in the list of tax-exempt items. Taxpayers can look forward to this next year." |

Got a aftermarket trigger spring for the Norinco last week.... Took it out to the range today. Shooting Wolf corrosive ammo I'm getting 3-4" bench rest groups at 100 yards with 5 round groups. Other than the trigger spring upgrade to smooth out the trigger pull its a unaltered SKS. Anyone got any suggestions of ways to upgrade improve/ accuracy slightly on the Sks without altering the action. I would like to get down to 3" consistently. Anyone know where to find a good aftermarket iron sights?

So the firearm we all know, and in the case of many profess an undying love for, is now over a hundred years old. Now, we all know the 1911 still goes bang when we pull the trigger, but is it really just a blast from past now? A little bit of history that tickles our fancy for owning it it, much like a 1860 Colt or a Remington 1858? In a world of high capacity polymer pistols that function on very high MRBF's (mean rounds between failures) is the 1911 simply a higher priced pistol that offers few pro's in exchange for a slew of con's? I understand that this thread may ruffle a few feathers, but rest assured that I only bring up the subject after some deep inner debate on my next pistol purchase.
Here is a video that does not reflect how I personally feel about the 1911, but is good subject matter for this discussion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfJj90eNIfE

Hello everyone.
Recently, the Almighty Mod LJ126 noticed that our site isn't showing up in search engine results. This probably explains why the site has been slow recently. I checked out Wetpaint Central to see if they had any info about this, and it seems Wetpaint is currently going through the wikis and deleting any that violate their terms of service. I'm assuming this is why wikis aren't showing up in search engines; Wetpaint probably wants to do some cleaning up before their sites show up in searches. Personally, I don't think we have anything to worry about since our Wiki doesn't inherently violate any of their terms of service, not to mention we're one of the most popular Wikis they have (See LJ's thread about our site rankings). Either way, please back up any important information that you have posted on the site, just in case. That includes pictures, survival plans, any pages with info you want to hold on to, etc. http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/ http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/thread/5076925/Announcement

Well folks after much careful consideration and days of thought, I sold my 1911 to a family friend. The rest of my ammo I am going to donate to my brother. I have not shot my .45 in almost 5 months and keeping up with three pistol calibers at this time is not cost effective. So I painfully parted with it and sold it to somebody who will use it. I will more than likely look for a new Sig, Glock, or Smith and Wesson to replace it and get either a 9mm or .40 caliber. So anybody else phasing out certain calibers or types of weapons to ease the budget burden?

The longer that Im a fan of zombie fiction, the more im drawn towards relying on melee weapons and not so much towards firearms. Dont get me wrong, I love my guns but I think more and more that being well adept with melee weapons will be equally as important to survive an outbreak.
I dont own any melee weapons yet, but im currently considering a tomahawk combo. not sure if i want a tomahawk/machete combo, tomahawk/fighting knife combo, or a dual tomahawks. Im not sure why, but the tomahawk has become a very underrated weapon/tool. Native Americans use them for who knows how long as tools and weapons and they are very fierce. I would rather use one than a katana sword or something, because i feel like they are easier to own (considering REAL swords are very expensive) they are more concealable, easier to use, lighter, and they serve you well when chopping wood or something is needed.

This came up in another thread.
Does your loved ones know what your guns and special" man" toys are worth? It's one of the last things we want to think about...but what happens to all your bang toys if something happens to you? I personally know of widows selling off the collection to so called "friends" or not the most honest gun dealers that lie about the guns value and then buy up hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of guns and gear for pennies on the dollar. I know my "gun values" list is in need of some drastic updating. I have a note book with serial numbers and descriptions of every gun and gun accessories of value in it. With what I paid for it and the present "market" value with the last date its last updated value(s). This can cover more than guns. Motorcycles Collectibles Antiques Specialty shop tools This along with a will saying who gets what can save your loved ones grief later in life. But like a will this requires keeping it up to date or its almost worthless.... kind of like mine. I know it isn't survival or zombie related. It is real life and will effect everyone at one time or another. I also know this thread will die a fast death unless someone else can add other important info to it. Just thought it was important enough to post.

If people don't know how to identify mushrooms, and they don't have a specialist with them, how do you expect them to survive? Not to be mean, but I'm just saying.

I perfectly understand the point of defense against raiders, and in general terms of security, but where do zombies fit into the picture?
I mean, they will generally NOT be aiming for biting the center-mass until the targets is down, usually with a bite to the neck or a limb,as those are more accesible. You could create pads to fit around your neck(which would be rather uncomfortable) and wrap around your wrist, but would that be enough to buy you time(your not going to stick around being bitten all day,are you).Of course you could go for the extreme options such as wearing an NBC class EOD battlesuit, but that is probably not accesible to most people. I have a Class II-A Kevlar Vest,I brought off tradme second hand for around about NZ$299.00 with little wear and tare, but it is said to only be effective against handgun ammunition, but you should be taking cover if engaging in a firefight. One word of advice,DO NOT get a false sense of indestructability from these products.

Yes, in June my family is moving out of Queens, NY! We are moving to Homer Georgia, Northeast of Atlanta. My mom got a superintendent job for the school there. I have found a trade school for diesel and truck mechanics fairly near by (an hour drive each way), and have gotten accepted for the fall semester.
I love the idea of getting out of New York with it's smog, crime, and gun laws.

Well, I'm sad to say that real life finally happened to me. I had to trade in the Hummer for something *sob* more practical. We needed less debt to help with our upcoming mortgage so I picked up a Pathfinder.
Now as a former Nissan Xterra owner I've got a good idea as to what I'm getting into here. I will say this though, wow. These people sure know how to put more gadgets into a vehicle than I've ever seen before. There's cameras and dvd players, and and all sorts of switches and buttons I haven't even tried yet so that's kind of exciting. I'm also looking into lift kits and larger tires and of course one of my custom light bars (check my profile for the xterra light bar) but otherwise I'll leave it pretty much as is. Better make a point to this thread or it's going to seem like rambling so..... as far as survival goes have you ever thought about how much more or less your vehicle is going to make you prone to looting? Kind of like having a BOB that screams militant, having a vehicle that seems uber capable might make the neighbors remember you come an apoc situation. Just a thought.
