I would like to extend an invitation. This invitation is to all residents of Colorado or whoever happens to be in the area when it goes down. Go to N38.526468 W-104.913125 its in Colorado Springs, CO on Fort Carson. It should be very apparent when you get there where to go. There is an entire town made of armored buildings with thick steel shutters and heavy swinging steel doors. There are tunnels in some to connect buildings. the buildings have strong steel doors to lock the tunnels. The main building we will be in is an embassy with three stories and a helipad on top. It is surrounded by a 12 foot concrete wall and razor wire. there are very few ways in. RULES: When you enter city limits walk calmly in a logical patten "single file or a marching formation" Unless your being chased then fire a few rounds off so we can get to quarters and start dropping hostiles. Please rid yourself of any infected followers before you come our way because you can hear a 240B from a very long way away, we don't want any attention. You should see some survivor "X" in red hanging from the building. If you don't see any indication that it is occupied then enjoy a fortress courtesy of the U.S. Government. Oh did I mention all the houses are furnished with dressers, beds, tables, chairs, desks, couches, love seats and other stuff? They are for room clearing and urban combat training.

This would be an awesome place for a ZPOC stronghold and it still could if you planned it correctly, had a large enough team, nice funding or long term preparation, and some luck.

Terry Hills Estates is North west of Phoenix just off of Grand Ave. I've never been there myself but I've seen Airel photes "Google Maps" it apears to have what looks like it has a strip mine, Rv Park, and high end estates with pools. I have a ex-military friend who share my interest in being prepaired. He plans on going there with others and prepairing it for short term incampment. I plan on occuping a loctaion in the city and gathering supplys and then moving the supplys to the rendezvous.

From a Sarajevo War Survivor:
Experiencing horrible things that can happen in a war - death of parents and friends, hunger and malnutrition, endless freezing cold, fear, sniper attacks. 1. Stockpiling helps. but you never no how long trouble will last, so locate near renewable food sources. 2. Living near a well with a manual pump is like being in Eden. 3. After awhile, even gold can lose its luster. But there is no luxury in war quite like toilet paper. Its surplus value is greater than gold's. 4. If you had to go without one utility, lose electricity - it's the easiest to do without (unless you're in a very nice climate with no need for heat.) 5. Canned foods are awesome, especially if their contents are tasty without heating. One of the best things to stockpile is canned gravy - it makes a lot of the dry unappetizing things you find to eat in war somewhat edible. Only needs enough heat to "warm", not to cook. It's cheap too, especially if you buy it in bulk. 6. Bring some books - escapist ones like romance or mysteries become more valuable as the war continues. Sure, it's great to have a lot of survival guides, but you'll figure most of that out on your own anyway - trust me, you'll have a lot of time on your hands. 7. The feeling that you're human can fade pretty fast. I can't tell you how many people I knew who would have traded a much needed meal for just a little bit of toothpaste, rouge, soap or cologne. Not much point in fighting if you have to lose your humanity. These things are morale-builders like nothing else. 8. Slow burning candles and matches, matches, matches

The ZSDW would greatly benefit from an actual location. Of course we would have to purchase land for this and pay taxes on that land. I propose the base be in America somewhere. It would probably be best to situate this base in America as over 60% of the wiki is from there. If we bought an empty field in a strategically defensible location against zombies, we could use one of the wiki's archiatects and everyone could contribute in its actual construction. We could have gun training, radio rooms, bedrooms for those staying long and short term. Let me know what you think. This is quite an ambitous idea after all.

You're busy battling the undead when suddenly... you get thirsty!
Every good survivalist knows to have some water on hand, but this thread is for asking and answering the specific questions about water. Heck, I think this should be our topic of the week. Anyways, To start things off, recommendations per day per person are a gallon in survival situations. You can live on a half gallon, but you better drink every drop and not sweat too much. So where do you get a gallon of fresh water per day? First is what you've got stored up. I've got 30 gallons of fresh, drinkable water stored in my kitchen in FDA-approved plastic jerry cans. You can also stockpile water bottles, plastic jugs from the grocery store, Sparkletts bottles, or any other safe container of water. As long as it keeps the water in, contaminants out, and doesn't leach into the water, you can store water in it. The second way to ensure you've got some water is to scavenge it. If you're quick about it, you can fill your bathtub and other various bowls, pots, and buckets before the municipal water loses pressure or gets contaminated. You can also find water in the tanks of flush-toilets, in water heaters, and even in the pipes of houses (close the main, open an upstairs sink, and suck with all your might on the front yard garden hose). Even still, you're going to want to purify anything you aren't 100% sure of its safety unless there's no other choice. I have a set of purification tablets that disinfect and deodorize the water to make it safe, but some people have great success with other forms of purification. Lets hear your opinions and thoughts!

we all know that, unless it's some kind of nuclear radioactive sludge hits the fan scenario, trading of some sort will always be there. z-day is no different.
so what will be in the highest demand? how can we safeguard our stock from being stolen? what can we replenish without having to scavenge? these are all key questions that could possibly save our lives. we all know guns and ammunition will be a staple of trade come z-day, but it wont be the one you can sell for the highest amount. a lot of people have suggested drugs, but anyone(except those on foot) can make drugs and alcohol(even walkers can make that). porn and sex are ones that will get you VERY far. and you can replenish the amount of you have of each(except sex, if you care about your girls enough to give them condoms(i would) and if you have a camera, you can make copies of the porn, then sell the copies. and if your group has electricity, you can use digital cameras and then recharge them, thus destroying the need for film. food is another, however it won't be very high in demand until people relize its all been scavaged. after that, its price will skyrocket. services will essentially be the only way convoys will last, seeing as how they have huge, gaping weakness called fuel(followed by lack of space, hygiene(usually),land, food, rescouses, defensive capabilities(one raider could take your whole operation down too quick for you to fight back if he had a military sniper rifle.)essentialy, this is any act done for someone in exchange for some kind of reward. but the one i feel will be worth the most: fuel. it will be incredibly rare, and as time goes on,that amount only goes down.cars are great zed killers and one of the fastest modes of transportation.they will no doubt be very popular.however, they require gas(unless you have one of those tesla motors cars, which you probably don't.)and as such, will make fuel a vital resourse.

Max Brooks says a house is bad for a lvl 3 outbreak. What if it has a big strong concrete wall about it (about 10 m in the higher part and 4 in the lower part, it has 3 floors, it has chickens (about 10), has a little sustaineable farm, has solar panels, is BIG, has the strongest iron blinds, armored doors and its only weakness is a strong metal fence door easy to block with concrete and bricks?
It has a hunting rifle, big, strong knifes, sledgehammers, lead pipes, good sniping places, and lots of strategic points for killing zombies. What do you think? Who's wrong? Me or Max?

Alright guys, so as I was sitting here thinking about how i might defend a post zed base, and i got to thinking about what would happen if a zed was attracted to the location i will be in. If i was to leave the zed clawing at the door, it would eventually break through, or worse, attract more. So a good melee weapon in the hands of a careful person should be enough to dispatch it.
But what happens when there is more than one zed, or someone slips up and uses a firearm. That might attract dozens more. So unless your very careful, while you are trying to defend your base, you could inadvertently make yourself into an online zombie game where you have to run all around your base re-barricading doors and windows while your trying to shoot the closest zed. I think we all know how those end. Game Over. So what can you do? Well that's exactly why i started this thread. Also, if the answer seems obvious, i apologize in advance, I'm still adjusting to the community and am always learning.

Just relocated to Arizona from Chicago. Currently living in a ranch style home on a two acre plot surrounded by a 6 feet high cinder block perimeter walls with a cast iron fence in the front for vehicle entry. I just moved so I havent had any landscaping done. My exterior landscaping consists of sand and desert shrubs. Besides boarding windows and doors and all that I have a new idea, and want opinions...
I see my neighbor down the way has a small bulldozer. Say I was inclined to take said bulldozer and take the sand and pile it up around my house. Leaving path ways only for my doors and garage, which is attached to my house. My house would end up looking like a big mound of sand. Anything I should worry about or add to this construction if I decided to do it?

I believe this is a location where ancient man could have held out against the undead. It's in Irael and it has a water source and ample area for gardening. It's high up with extremely limited, easy to defend access. Over 900 people where able to hold out up there against an entitre Roman legion for an extended period of time. With modern upgrades and adequate supplies, Israeli Defense Forces could easily hold out against a Zombie outbreak, and probably be able to protect hundreds of civilians as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masada

Anyone planning implementing a Four Season Self-Powered Aquaponics system or systems. What sources are you using to plan with? Do you plan on turning this into a business for your BOL? What breed of fish are you going to use for eating and etc? What vegetables and fruit are you considering in growing.
Even if you do not what aquaponics is, please join the conversation.

I know most people on this site plan on getting out to a remote location at some point after Z-Day because staying in a city is a horrible idea. If you can't get to your BOL for some reason or if you don't have one, going to a smaller city or town might not be such a bad thing. Which begs the question of how big is too big?
Obviously cities like NYC, Chicago, LA, Baltimore, Atlanta and any other large metropolitan areas are out of the question. But what about smaller cities or towns with populations under say 20,000? I feel that most people in these areas would flee or try to flee, leaving plenty of supplies behind without there being a ridiculous number of Zeds. Starting over in a small town or city would be easier than having to build from the ground up. If you wanted to hole up or start over in a city or town, how big is too big?
