An original Timberrattler thread, one that I think should be discussed again. I have reposted the OP in its original form, and below is a link to the thread. Enjoy!
~LJ http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/wiki/zombieprep/thread/3540585/Comfortably+numb.... Post-Z would be a nightmare. One thing many will look to to ease the pain and anxiety will be drugs and alcohol. Will you partake in controled substances and perscription drugs or do you believe their use would be too risky and dangerous in a post apocolyptic world? There would be no such thing as illegal drugs. You could grow marijuana in your back yard if you wanted to and cook meth on your front porch. Presciption drugs wouldn't have to be prescribed you could take whatever you found. It wouldn't matter if you were 21 or not. If you could get your hands on it, you could drink it. I'm looking for people's thoughts on this subject and I am not looking to judge. Would drugs and booze be a curse or a blessing?

Until recently, I was a firm believer in tactical vests. The ammount of pockets, holsters, and other accessories would make your gear a whole lot easier to carry. But, then I read on the "army surplus stores" thread how somebody (I think it was DevilNuts) pointed out that it would pretty much be saying: "I have cool stuff. Kill me and take it." (Yes, I know he nor anyone else actually said that, but that was the idea I got from it.) Given my lack of military experience, assuming airsoft isn't counted, I thought it would be better to ask the opinion of others on tactical vests. So, what does everyone think of them?
(P.S. I looked, and I didn't see any other threads like this. Although, if there is one, I'm sorry.)

There is no shortage of discussion on how raiders will think, how they will behave and how to defend against them.
Just for fun, I have decided to plan a raid on a generic survivor camp, as a bad guy leader. I don't know how other raiders will think, but this is how I would do it: Step 1: Observation When I have discovered the existence of your group, I will immediately begin observing you. I will watch, from a distance, as you carry on your daily routines. I will not interfere or make my presence known, in any way whatsoever. Here are some of the things I will be looking for: - How big is the settlement? Just a few people, in the tens, hundreds? Are they mostly men, women, children? - How are you living? Good clothes or tattered rags? Well fed or emaciated? - What are your activities? Are you farming, raising livestock, mining for gold, etc. How are you spending your time? - What equipment are you using? Do you have vehicles, work animals, hand-crafted tools or machines? Can I hear generators or see smoke? - What is your level of readiness? Are your people armed? With what? How are your defenses? What kind of barrier have you erected, how many guards can I see, what time/how often do they change shift? - How often do you send people outside the wire, and what are they doing while gone? What do they bring back, and from what direction? Once I have gathered some basic intelligence on your operation, I will decide whether it is worth my time to plan a raid, or just move on. - If you are too well-defended or heavily armed, I will probably scrap the mission. It is not worth it for me to lose people and expend all of my ammunition and resources on a mission that is not a sure thing. - If you have nothing of value and are barely scraping by, I will leave you alone until that changes. I will be back in a few months to see how you're doing. <tbc>

Okay so SHTF and your city of residence is killing itself off as we speak but there is good news:
You escaped with all your gear intact and a respectful amount of bullets and food. Even better you 7 people with you who through various means helped you and others get out of Bombshell City. With various bags and purses filled with food and bottled water as well as assorted hand weapons the following people are with you: Walter: Runs a law firm. Has been quiet so far. Few interactions he's had have been oriented at going to the police for help. Hid in his office as his secretary made kibbles out of his night staff. Was found trying to get gas out of a drained pump. Decently fit 6'2 43-year-old male. Sandy: Nightshift Nurse at the regions main hospital. Was called in during the morning when a large influx of patients entered the hospital but was trapped on the highway and vacated her car with a small emergency medkit when the animated began flooding the streets. Is very quiet most of the time but comes across as angry when she's under pressure. Has indicated a prior friendly relationship with Jacob and was found with him on your way out. An athleticly built 5'4 24-year-old female. Jacob: Police rookie who was called in to investigate a woman walking around nude and covered with blood. The ensuing altercation upon arrival claimed his partner's life. Has indicated a prior relationship with Sandy. Has a noticable dislike of Walter. Has been very calm so far and has provided input to aid your escape. Has no desire to lead but has shown willingness to step in to help you and the group. Is very by-the-bookish prefering to operate like a police officer as opposed to a survivor. A very fit 6'3 25-year-old male. ~Cont~

I think that it would be very interesting to create a "rulebook" on all of the do's and don'ts of surviving the zombie apocalypse. I'll begin:
(in no sense of importance) #1: When you use a flamethrower, you're just creating flaming zombies! #2: No zombie pets... #3: Don't believe anyone who says they haven't been bitten. Get proof! #4: Using yourself as zombie bait is just a bad idea. #5: Have no sympathy for the flesh-munchers (they aren't humans anymore).

Following suit with Timberrattler's popular rifle thread, here is the handgun thread. All of the same rules apply.
1) Afforadability. Could the average Joe who frequents the site afford it? So I'm putting a cap of $1300 on spending. The higher the price tag the lower the score. 2) Accuracy. Can you hit the broad side of a barn with it. We are shooting at a realitivly small target here. The less accurate, the lower the score. 3) Longevity. Has this handgun been around long enough to prove itself a contender? Johny-come-latelies would have to have proved themselves in an unbiased test. Old dogs that are always ready for the hunt will score higher. 4) Dependibility. Will that sum batch shoot every damn time? Look at the history and reviews of said handgun. Is it bulletproof or a jam-a-matic? 5) Multi-functional. Can it be concealed easily? Can you hunt with it? Is it tough enough to hammer nails or be used as a club? 6) Weight. We will be on the move and every ounce counts for or against us. The lighter your load out the more mobile you become. If you have ever run with a holstered weapon, you know what I'm talking about. 7) Speed. Is it a semi auto, revolver, single shot, or full auto? Is it quick to reload? In conclusion how quickly can you put bullets downrange with this handgun? 8) Ammo availability. If you can buy it in bulk at cheaperthandirt.com as well as pick it up in abundance at your local gun shop it'll score high. If you have to special order it and you haven't seen that particular ammo at Wal-Mart ever it'll score lower. Unlike the rifle list, I want to make an added rule with this list. IF THERE ARE A TON OF VARIANTS, JUST COVER THE PARENT FIREARM! Example, I don't want to see 6 different 1911's on the list. Make sure every firearm posted is unique in its own way. Continued

Welcome to the feature thread where you can list your arsenal.
Those of you who lack weapons now, here is a great place to post your "dream weapons." Be ready to receive input, comments, criticism, or kudos on your choices. If you already have a big pile of guns, go ahead and post your inventory to show the FNG's a thing or two. Guidelines: Realistic weapons only. NO fantasy or video-game weapons, NO nuclear bombs, etc. Be prepared to get your choices commented on. If you cannot take criticism or advice, this isn't the place for you. NO endless back-and-forth debates. (AK vs AR, for example) NO flaming.

Alright, I think that everybody agrees that it's important to have fun once in a while, even after the zombies take over the Earth. So in contrast to all the serious threads on the ZSDW, let's have some fun! The game? Finish the above guy's paragraph! One person posts part of a paragraph, and the next poster puts in the last sentance, and then a paragraph of their own. The only rules are don't start the last sentance and don't be completely idiotic (sarcastic or humorous is fine). Be sure only to put one sentance in your reply! Also, if there's a mix-up with someone posting before you, I'll put VOID and a new paragraph. Examples:
Bad Bob: You are in your base when suddenly you jump really high to a blimp that was in the sky. Then you... Ted: Meet Hitler and reenact the last scenes of Wolfenstien. You then jump off the burning blimp and smash yourself into the ground. Good Lucas: You climb to the top of your base looking for zeds to dispatch with your trusty sniper. You find one and aim your gun at it, chambering a round you reloaded. Jacob: You then discover that you really suck at reloading bullets as your hands are promptly blown off by the resulting explosion. Alright, here's mine to start the game! You are drinking a cup of lukewarm Tang and coc-king (ZSDW censors that) and decoc-king your semiautomatic 9mm. Your friend warns you that that's really dangerous, but you keep doing it because you're bored. And then the sniper says that their's been a perimiter breach!

So, I came to the realization that I'm far more unprepared than I think. We all have been discussing things like "Guns & S**t", and there are plenty of other items that only get a brief thread for the basic necessities.
We all need water. We all need food. We all need shelter. I have enough arms & munitions to hold off a siege for a few days using the proper tactics. I have a few back up plans for a "Fall-Back" scenario. Hell, I have some stuff that most people will kill for in the Z-Day Apocalypse. Here's where I'm failing: Finding good stuff now to enhance my (and others) survival. This is an issue brought to life after a serious consideration of what I have. Like I said before: I have Weaponry ranging from Ballistics's to Nunchuck's. I have food, Canned, that can last me for a while. I have Chlorine Tabs that will purify a lot of nasty water (toilet water anyone). I'm basically asking for help here. Many of you guys & gals are in "Disaster Prone" areas that have frequent Tornado's, Hurricanes, Floods, and the such. So, for the readers of this site (myself included), what are your takes on things like Water Purification, First Aid, Long-Lasting-Food and the such. Also, if the Admins & Mods wouldn't mind: can we feature this? This is a real Survival Question I have.

A survival community has been established and you are part of it. You have a seat on the community council and have a say in how things are run. You also get a vote on what kind of decisions are made.
A well liked teen-aged girl has gone missing and shortly after a convoy of vehicles arrives. You outnumber this group 2 to 1 and while they are well armed so are you. The leader of this group exits his truck with the missing girl under one arm and a megaphone in his free hand. He says, "We have a girl here who says she wants to go home. We want her to go home too. Only thing is we want a finders fee for this fine little lady. Turn over half your guns and half your ammo, that water truck you have there comes with us loaded as does the backhoe. Refuse our generous offer and we'll move on and our new plaything comes with us." *Grabs girl and forcefully kisses her* "We'll give you a hour to talk things over then we'll be moving on." You have now entered the council chamber and the broken-hearted eyes of the cheif counciller (the mother of the girl) falls upon you. In a broken voice she asks, "What are we to do?" They have only asked for half of your firearms, the water truck saves you from moving water by bucket from a nearby lake but you could live without it, the backhoe is something you accuired recently in a scavenging trip but has allowed you to build up your defenses and the moat and bailey wall you were making with it isn't finished. Zombies are still a very real and present danger. What is your vote? A) Pay the ransom. B) Refuse. C) Attempt a rescue. D) Other.
