I have been thinking that the best survival strategy for me and my family is going out to sea. We own a 29 foot long NF sailboat that we could sail in shifts. We could either stay out to sea or find a small zombie free island to settle down on.
Equipment on the boat includes: - a VHF radio - food and water for a few days - a small first aid kit - a set of basic tools (screwdrivers, a hammer, knifes, etc.) - bolt cutters - an axe - various charts of the surrounding area as well as equipment needed for navigation like a compass - a kerosene stove and alcohol to burn in it - blankets and pillows - our sailing clothes (waterproof jackets, pants and boots as well as gloves and hats) - emergency signaling equipment (flares, horns, etc.) - a sonar fish finder - 2 fishing rods and related equipment - a GPS - waterproof matches - a lighter - a life raft - 2 binoculars - 2 fire extinguishers - spare parts for the engine - a bunch of standard sailboat stuff like ropes, fenders and anchors. I would obviously bring more stuff from land like clothes, more food and other things necessary for survival. What do you guys think I should ad to the equipment on my boat to maximize our chances of survival.

Basically I have acess to civilian aircraft. I need ideas on ways to utilize this to its full potential. Most planes are small enough to land on Large roadways. I fly very well, I have my pilot's license and working to get my instrument rating.
But I have a plan involving it as an escape to a true bug out location or near a colony if contact was ever made. I just need possible ideas for its use that doesn't involve escaping.

So ol' Toxic bought a 1992 Viking pop-up last month. Came across a deal on Facebook again. I'm standing in the seller's driveway, telling my girlfriend about all the fun camping trips we can take, but you know what I was really thinking.... how can I outfit this thing for zombie survival??!!
No, really, I don't need to use up brainpower on trying to fortify a pop up camper. I would, however, like any tips that other pop-up owners or campers may want to provide. Other than getting drunk and passing out in a tent for one night once a year, I haven't been camping in a long time. Right now I am contemplating pulling the decrepit stove out of the camper. Its kinda beat up and I'm not sure I trust the old propane tubing and fittings. I'm thinking of buying a decent propane campstove that I can use outside or inside the camper in a pinch. It doesn't need to be real large or fancy. Does anyone here have a favorite campstove?

I drive a seven-year-old Honda Accord with a GPS system and about 83,000 miles. Last month, my car's GPS went ker-plunk and I had to take it in, seeing as how a) much of my car's center console (the more complex controls -- AC vent and power settings, changing radio presets, clock controls, etc.) worked through the GPS, and b) I was about due for an oil change already, so I might as well get it out of the way right there and then. They took out the GPS and said that they'd call me back within a week when it was ready. Due to a problem with the company that supplied the needed parts (which was based out of California), one week turned into three, and when they finally got it, three weeks turned into four because there were still problems.
So I finally get the GPS reinstalled in my car... only to find that it thinks my car is in Torrance, California rather than Denville, New Jersey, and that somehow, neither the parts company nor the dealership noticed this. (I was able to manually fix this so that my car's position was accurate, but it was still a major oversight on everyone's part.) Just a word of warning to anybody who plans on making heavy use of a GPS system to find an escape route on Z-Day. Ordinary paper maps and road atlases, while more cumbersome, are far more reliable, much cheaper, and can be picked up at any rest stop or minimart, while a GPS system will probably be one of the first things to start having problems in your car (it was in mine), and you could probably forget about repairing it if it breaks. If you've got one, then hey, might as well use it, but I've scratched it from my list of Z-Day necessities. Hell, even without Z-Day in mind I doubt I'll be buying another car with an integrated GPS. Thanks, but I'll save $500 and use Mapquest and my phone's Google Maps app. I'm sure most of you already knew this, though.

Me and my parents are talking about buying a new vehicle- they promised several years ago to match whatever I put up to a new car- it seems they are true to their word.
I know they will probably back out their support if I choose something they don't agree with, the most off-roadly thing that they are likely to accept is the Kia Soul. It's well within my budget too. My mom even says it looks really nice. (but she doesn't have much pull in this decision) I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether it can be modded to be more off-roadly than as-is factory? I don't have much a background in cars, I can change oil and do very basic maintaince but things like adding lift is well beyond what i know. I'm inspired by what StrykerPez did to his 2006 Scion xA in this thread: http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/The+Urban+Escape+Vehicle I'm wondering is I can buy a normal vehicle that has some decent clearance and make it better?

Hey everyone,
I've been looking into a cheap BOV that would be great as a stand-alone or to be towed a short distance by a van. Motorbikes appear to be too weak and unstable to properly tow much gear, and I figure it'd be pretty tough trying to get a shot off while mounted. Cars and other larger vehicles are either too big to be efficient on what little fuel may be available, or too small to be effective while off-roading. All the ATVs I've seen go for pretty cheap new compared to an old beater and I think would be excellent for all purpose activities such as quick, speedy transport and solid off-roading capabilities, and hefty enough to transport a great deal of gear and give you a sturdy base to ride on over an extended period of time. Any thoughts on how effective an ATV might be? Maybe if some of you are already planning on using an ATV as a BOV you could share with me some good makes and models for less than $6,000. Thanks

The big problem will always be the finite amount of resources available post-Z apoc. You will run out of gas and bullets, food, medicine, water, people, hope.
Granted you were able to make a stand and put together some mechanically inclined folks that could build a truck similar to the one in Land of the Dead, the Dead Reckoning, it is still going to run into the problem of finite resources. You can only have so much space for fuel, food and other essentials not to mention the crew. Ok, so you build your ultimate anti-zombie truck. Not one Z can get it, it lumbers at top speeds of 30 possibly 40 miles per hour. You bring extra fuel and load it inside, you're loaded for bear with all manner of ammo and guns and cleaning/repairing equipment. You go to the outskirts of a city and then boom, you kill your first Z. A few start to pour in then a few hundred then a few thousand. The next thing you know you're wading up to your eyeballs in Zack and you've run out of ammo, what then? You're armored, you're protected, they can't possibly topple your rig and they can't get in. Are you now fated to suffer the doom of the sardine in the tin can (ooops who brought the can opener? No one?). Would it be possible to mount some sort of external weapon that you can use to knock Zack heads while controlling the weapon from inside? Or have slits on the sides where you can employ a very long, weighted pole with a wicked blade on the end that you can lift up and let the weight crash down on Zack's head? Or possibly your rig is so high up that you can open up a hatch and start knocking heads from the top of your truck (ensuring of course that they don't have the chance to ramp up over each other). How long would it take do you think? Would you be up to such monotonous and no doubt tiresome work to rid a city or small area of thousands, possibly millions of Zack? Will 50 of these work vs 1M Z? Thoughts?

how would you do it? I was watching a movie called Stake Land (awesome post apocalyptic movie) and got the idea about make-shift armor with stuff in your house. Is your vehicle even worth trying to beef up, or are you just going to try to steal something? Realistically speaking, not any "Once shtf I'm gonna jack a cement truck and mount dual 50's on the hood..."
I have a 94 Ford Bronco. It's an automatic which drives me crazy. I drove a stick shift from ages 16 to 26. This is my first auto...ever. I feel like I lost a testicle. Anyway, it's got a lift and 33inch mud tires. It drives like a mini tank. It's definitely a tough vehicle. I can do 0-60 in about 3.6....minutes. I have a bunch of those metal grates you can pick up at wal-mart or target (the ones you use to build bookshelves or dressers). If you watched Stake Land you'll see where I'm going with this. I also happen to have an insane amount of zip ties that I can use to hook all these metal grates together. With minimal effort, I could pretty much wrap my Bronco in a metal grate 'blanket' . I know zip ties aren't going to hold against everything, but long enough to get me to my bug out location. Anyway, does anyone have a better idea than zipties (household items only) and what would you do?

What's the best aspect to look for in a vehicle for a SHTF situation?
Just to name a few: offroad capability, fuel economy, toughness, raw power, speed, storage room, full tank range, etc. List your top three most important aspects and your reasons for choosing them. On a side note, what is your preference between standard and automatic transmission?

So lets say you don't have your dream anti zombie/raider vehicle. Describe how you would reinforce the vehicle you have now to repel zombies and or raiders. Also how would it survive terrain?
I currently own a 2006 Chevy Malibu. It was originally a family car passed onto me. I don't see this thing getting very far in a post apocalyptic world just by itself. So....I would reinforce its doors with 2 inch thick steel plating, replace the windows with moderate bullet proof glass, replace the suspension with heavier duty suspension that can withstand some off-roading. Also reinforce the gas tank to keep from either getting damaged intentionally or unintentionally. The tires would be replaced with thicker rubber to withstand sharp rocks. At the top of my head that's all I can think of doing.

Heres a website that I found a few weeks ago that sells a lot of old military vehicles.
http://www.mortarinvestments.eu/ Most of the vehicles are eastern block vehicles from Russia or Czechoslovakia and are pretty cheap,I think that this would interest a lot of members for a z-poc vehicle. What do you think?

What are people's thought on items and gear to carry in your vehicle at all times?
In both of our cars we have the following blankets, torches , mainstay survival bars, 5L of water , 1st aid kit , fire extinguisher a small over night bag with a change of clothes and toiletries, maps of the local area and pro 2000 full face mask X 2 and filters for both. a couple of packs of those disposable overalls kind of handy if you have to change a tire or things like that Both vehicles have well equipped tool boxes onboard and 2 spare tires Those items are checked regularly to ensure they are still serviceable So i was wondering what else do people have in their vehicles just incase things go bad if you are out and about at the time

I've been pondering for the past week on how to make my truck more durable. I've thought through skid plates and adding all kinda things What the focus is here is making the cabin more secure. I have crudely drawn my idea on Windows Paint and uploaded them to photobucket and will share them with you.
My idea starts with a classical "headache roll bar" concept and I take it to the next level. The design is crude and I do plan on using heavy metals ranging from 3/8" iron bars and 1/4" thick iron angle iron. square stock or/and tubing. I estimate the whole thing to add 150lbs to 200lbs of weight. The basic Idea is to make it to look like this when in level one protection: http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/jessebanke/truckarmorlevel1.jpg There will be folding down gates that I figure will weigh 20lbs per side windows and 60lbs for the front window. The hinges will need to be very rugged. Infront of the front window there will have to be a support that can lock the front gate in place and keep it about 6inches away from the windshield. The side window gates will have to be able to either have mounts to lock them down or have a holes in the doors that allows locking rods from the gate to be secured through the door in the inside of the cabin. All these gates will be folded up on the roof rack when not in use. They will need either a U-bolt to hold them in place while not in use or some sort of latch/lock. I made a crude windows paint picture of the gates in place: http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/jessebanke/truckarmorlevel2.jpg Any information or advice about what type of hinges to use, how to secure the gates in the upward and lowered positions, and what to do about the rear window. I want to have something that will allow the occupants to open the rear window and escape fairly easily, THANKS I've searched high and low on these forums for the same idea, with nothing coming up similar.

I liked reading though this, i like the pictures it provides as well it may be a project of mine someday, but that's really far off Even more usefull IMO is to adapt farm equipment to run on wood gas, you could delay having to switch to horses oxen or man power. A problem i could see is that the gasifier is vunerable, someone (infected or otherwise) could hand onto it and possibly tear it off. Perhaps mounting it in the back of a truck and putting a cage around it would remedy this problem, what do you think? EDIT, Spelling
