Here's another fun little educational diversion, whose inspiration comes from the Chuck Hawks website:
If you had a strict budget of $1000 dollars to spend on a Designated Marksman's-type Rifle, how would you set it up? You need to purchase: A) A rifle, chambered in an appropriate cartridge caliber (minimum .243 Win), B) Optics and mounting hardware, C) Any additional accessories necessary to make the rifle serviceable (sling, bipod, camouflaging, rangefinder, etc), Like the last contest/questionaire, all rifles must be new or "like new" condition. Active links must be provided to each item. However, sales tax and shipping, if applicable, are NOT to be included in the total. You may only use links to currently available or backorderable items; as we all know, prices have changed sometimes significantly over the last few years, yet links still exist to pricing of these items. Again, current pricing only. Oh, and assume that you can't borrow parts from stuff already in your own or another person's collection. This includes ammunition, or scopes, or whatever. Level playing field.

Time to get back in touch with our roots a bit, and go cheap.
What are some high quality budget-minded weapon choices? We have a similar thread that's now three years old, but let's open up this proverbial can of worms and discuss. As always, I have to plug the Mosin-Nagant rifles. They're still very inexpensive (ranging from $100-250) at a gun shop, still covered in cosmoline. Ammunition for them is still available, and still fairly inexpensive if you buy in bulk. The carbine models are a bit harder to find now, but the M91/30 is available in abundance. Aftermarket options are available, if that's your thing. They usually come with everything you need (sling, ammo pouch, cleaning kit, bayonet) to take the rifle into a fight at the local range near you. I still advocate refinishing the rifle stock too; the factory shellac is junk. Strip it off, get you a water based Minwax stain (any color you want) and a 3 oz container of Tru-Oil and refinish the wood.

So, what do you think? Will it take down a grizzly bear? I've been in the market for a .22lr handgun for a while now and finally dropped some money on this little honey. I was more interested in a .22 revolver and will most likely be purchasing one in the future but I thought I'd give this Browning a try. I don't really expect to do much hunting with it. I'm thinking of putting a red dot up top and using it for some plinking fun. What I want to know is if any of you think a .22lr handgun is a good choice for a backpack gun? Would it be worth adding the extra weight or would the space and weight you'd use up be better spent on extra ammo for your primary sidearm or other gear?

| wkwkwkwk1 | Colt M4 - One of Portugal's Standard Issue Assault Rifles: Questions | 14 | Tuesday, 6:59 PM EDT by nightcreeper78 | ||||

Thread started: Sunday, 5:12 PM EDT

So, I recently found out that the Colt M4 Carbine is one of Portugal's Standard Issue assault rifles, along with the Heckler&Koch G3, the Sig543, the FN P90, the Tavor Tar-21 and Heckler&Koch MP5, as seen here:
http://mundomilitar.wordpress.com/2010/09/06/armamento-do-exercito-portugues/ I often tend to confuse the M family (M4, M4A1, ...) assault rifles with the AR family ones, and sometimes even inside each family. Also, I don't know much about these weapon's features, qualities, flaws, etc. I'd appreciate if someone could give me an overview on each of these firearms, as they are the ones I'm most likely to stumble upon. If you could also introduce me to the other weapons, such as the handguns and the sniper rifles, I'd appreciate it. Just by the way, I mentioned the Colt M4 because it's the one that's the most similar to the AR families, and I like those. Thanks in advance, wkwkwkwk1

The arguement for what is the best weapon for bugging out is endless so lets keep this to what YOU would choose and why.
Also, lets keep this to weapons that you own. For me it would be a AR15 16'' carbine chambered in 5.56 Nato Reasons? - relatively lightweight, small ammunition, very accurate, capable of hunting, excellent defense weapon, parts are common. Secondary would be my doublestack 1911 in .45 Reasons? - been around for 100+ years, 15 rounds of .45. nuff said. in all fairness a Ruger MKIII would most likely be a better secondary firearm So lets hear it! what two weapons would you carry for TEOTWAWKI?

Do you use any gear that required fitting, machining, or other modifications to be useful? If so, what and why?
I thought of this thread idea earlier today, when I was doing exactly that... making a holster fit a gun that it wasn't designed to fit. I ordered a Safariland 200 "Top Gun" for my issued duty revolver, a Taurus 82, for an excellent price on Ebay. New holster, $12! These list for ten times that price elsewhere! The catch - it is fit for a S&W k-frame, not the Taurus 82, which is slightly bigger. My revolver fit, but the thumb snap was a millimeter or two away from closing. A little bit of sanding, and few minutes of heat gun on low was all that was needed and now, I have an awesome duty holster! It fits perfectly now. The retention screw is still functional too. Side note: This wasn't a needless upgrade. The Blackhawk holster I was using, while adequate, was barely able to support the weight of the revolver it carried. It was getting "floppy" and the belt loop was beginning to come apart. In a months time. Way to go, Blackhawk! Side note II: There are no other Safariland 200 holsters at that price anymore. I managed to get lucky on a single rig. The cheapest price listed now is $35.

Whats your favourite melee weapon to use. I've been training with a switchknife but my favourite is a crowbar. it's fairly lightweight, but if you swing it hard enough it can pack one powerful blow.

| LJ126 | A Discussion for Future Firearms Owners Only | 16 | May 9 2013, 5:00 AM EDT by AlexHigginbotham | ||||
|
Thread started: May 5 2013, 4:17 AM EDT

A lot of our threads and articles really only speak to active firearms enthusiasts. This is great for those of us who have already gotten our proverbial feet wet, but in a way, these same discussions may serve to confuse, confound, and overload, possibly leading to disinterest. This isn't a good thing.
So to remedy this, I have an idea - let's listen to these folks, and see what they have in mind. Questionnaire time! (Many of the questions will apply towards American users but a member from any nation can participate.) My thinking here is that rather than us (current owners) telling you (future buyer) what you need to buy, maybe we can let you tell us what you're looking for, and we can collectively help guide you in the right direction. You can also PM me directly if you have any additional questions. Current owners, let this be a "safe" place. No judgements. 1) Do you have any firearms experience? ----- If so, what did you shoot, and did you enjoy it? ----- If not, what type of firearm (pistols, rifles, shotguns) are you interested in trying out? 2) If you were to purchase a firearm, would it be for recreation, self-defense, hunting or for preparedness, or a combination of the above? 3) Does your state/country allow for concealed carry, and is this something you would be interested in pursuing? Is it heavily restricted (may issue) or loosely enforced (shall issue) when it comes to the permit process? 4) Are there any specific "genre" of firearms you find interesting? For instance, modern sporting/defensive arms, obsolete military surplus, traditional sporting arms, "Cowboy" weapons, etc. 5) Would you be willing to sign up for supplementary training in marksmanship, to further your abilities and understanding of the topic? Or is this strictly a hobbyist's interest, where self-study will be the primary means of exploration?

So I really am into wrist watches. I have about 3 of them and am not sure what my fascination is with them. Maybe because I'm a time freak and need to be on time everywhere I go. Anyway, are you planning on having something that keeps track of time during SHTF? What type of watch is it?
I have 3 different watches but am only taking one with me if I have to leave during unrest. It's a S&W Diver wrist watch with a compass attached to the side. It looks a little tacticool but this thing can take one hell of a beating.

If all else fails of finding a weapon because you are very inexperienced survivor and happen to find a Harpoon gun because you think its a good weapon, why not?
If it was between Crossbow and Harpoon gun (Portable harpoon gun) of course wouldn't you have to pull back the cross bow every time? Gotta be pretty strong to do that. Unless i'm missing the big point here saying that "Harpoon guns can only be in underwater" Could it be used OUT of the water? Might be a pain to even take the harpoon out of the zombies, but i'm pretty sure their force is pretty powerful that it could either go through them slightly, or out of their body to a wall. So.... weapon or not? good or horrible, i'd like to hear what you would say. Just reminding that IF all else fails of finding a better weapon, such as a knife or firearms.

What are your thoughts and thinking? I have a L1A1 (mix of C1 and L1 parts) and I might just say it could beat a M1A or AR10. The HK91 might beat it in a reliable and accurate test. The L1 uses inch mags, for those who don't know.

How much mags do you carry in a SHTF scenario?
For my AR I have a USGI mag with a Israeli spring coupler and a "butt" cuff pouch. My chest rig has 8 mags and for "speed" reloads and breaking OODA loops I have 2 speed reloads on my battle belt, and 1 weak hand reload. For pistol mag 1 in the gun, 2 strong hand reloads and 2 "weak" hand reloads.

At the ripe old age of 26, I finally broke down and got a concealed carry permit here in VA (which is a right to carry state, just FYI).
And I picked up a Ruger SR9c. I've handled the M&P compact, some kind of kahr and the XDs, but the balance of the Ruger was better than all of them for me. One of those things you just pick it up and "know" that's the one. Its a good size for me as well, I'm 5'8" and 170 so not the biggest frame to conceal with. Probably headed to the range tomorrow :D.

Payday is tomorrow, and I want to take a new toy home. 10mm doesn't seem to be very popular around here, and I am pretty new to it myself. After hearing all its praises at work, I did a little research on the ballistics, and quickly fell in love. What I REALLY want is a Colt Delta Elite, but I'm not quite ready to dump another $1,300 into a pistol. I've come in contact with a used EAA Witness, and it's in extremely good condition. I have extremely good access to cheap ammo as well, and would be taking home 2 boxes of ball, 1 of 185g double tap, and 1 box of 200g double tap hardcast lead. What is the water cooler talk about 10mm?

I'll grab my camera and get to posting up a few new pictures here after tagging the "Post" button. My work EDC differs from my off-work stuff, so I have two distinct setups going at any one point in time. ... And from one hater to another, put up or shut up. Pictures speak a thousand words.

Does anyone else buy cheap knives?
I have about a half dozen of the BudK Wahoo Killer knife stashed around and just ordered six more at 3 for $4.99. Also have about the same number of the WalMart Ozark Trails $1 pocket knife. Not high quality knives, but not junk either. Cheap enough to have several scattered around where you live and work, in your vehicles. And, if you lose one, no dramatics. Drop is in a sewer line or septic tank, it can stay. Lost a pocket knife last week going into the local Federal building and had it in my bag, guards took it. At a $1 I will not worry about it.

According to the charts I've read on the topic, the shot pattern form an open cylinder bore shotgun should put 35-40% percent of the shot pellets in a 30" circle at 40 yards. Does anyone know at what distance the cylinder bore would generally put 100% of its pellets in the same circle or, by extension, how large a circle the shot column would encompass at across the room distances (3-4 yards)?

This one y'all probably won't recognize the name (immediately) but you're probably very familiar with the design...
A Zastava ZM70-201, aka M70. Not to be confused with the Zastava M70 PAP, an AKM variant. What? What the hell is that? The Model 70-201 is a reincarnation of the Zastava Z98, the Remington 798, the Interarms Mark X, and other Serbia/Yugoslavian manufactured rifles under various other names. It's a traditional Mauser 98 action, chambered in .30-06 Springfield, 24" barrel (1 in 9.8 twist), action installed in a very nice oiled Euro walnut monte-carlo stock (my favorite), with a modern safety and modern adjustable trigger. It's my understanding that the trigger is a Timney knockoff, though that's a rumor from the pawn shop and unsupported with substantial data. I've got to part ways with two of my rifles to afford it (one of which is already sold as I type this), but I think it's time to consolidate, modernize, and upgrade my collection with pieces I can genuinely say that I am proud to own. Besides, I always wanted a Mauser sporter. This takes all of the guesswork out of it for me. I'm willing to wager that this action will prove to be every bit as reliable as a German made Kar98K, or any other Mauser variant, given that's it's essentially identical to them. Odds are it's gonna be a little while until I can mount optics to it, but that's obviously something for which to plan. I'm not decided yet, but there's plenty of time to decide. Anywho, just wanted to share that. I'll post pictures as soon as it's home.
