I’m very new to the site but it seems every page is filled with questions regarding the .22LR and its ability as a zombie-hunting weapon. I personally love the .22 (light weight, can be silenced with a 2LT bottle, and magazines can hold a lot of rds.) although I do own an AK-47 and 9mm 1911.
I would like to run an experiment to finally prove or disprove the .22 abilities. Most of the debate goes into wither the .22 can penetrate a zombies head and at what range does it become ineffective. Unfortunately due to the high unemployment rate of Las Vegas I have a lot of time and ammunition on my hands and I need something to do! I am planning on setting up targets at 50, 100, 200 and 300 yrds. I will be using a variety of rounds (subsonic, HP, FMJ, and high velocity). I need some input on what I should use for a human head analog? I’m no mythbuster, so ballistic jell and human skulls are out of the question ha. What would you all recommend I use? People have said coconuts, pig skulls, ect. Any other feedback, within legality, would also be greatly appreciated. I will post pics and results once I get some feed back. Thanks all, Cameron Hopefully we can end this debate once and for all!!!!

I live in Australia and it's not very easy to get your hands on a gun here. So I was just seeing if anyone had any ideas about other weapons I could use. I have multiple knifes as well as a military sword, I'm considering getting my self a compound bow.
If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

I'm brand new to the forum, so my apologies if this sort of info has already been posted. But, I see the .22 round disparaged so much, that I feel I have to defend its merits:
I have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a "primary weapon" in zombie defense, since there are at least three different tactical scenarios: 1. Set-piece defense 2. Close-quarters combat 3. Offensive assault It is the first situation that I'd like to talk about. This is where you are sitting on top of your well-prepped, well-stocked, fortified encampment, eating your sandwich, rifle across your lap, loved ones down below playing cards, where you have to pick off the odd Zed that comes wandering through. You want something cheap, simple, reliable, quiet, easy to maintain, accurate, and that women and children can use. The .22 long rifle is awesome in this situation. Is a .22 round going to penetrate a zombie skull at 50 yards every single time? No. The good news is, however, that if you are well-practiced, calm, and disciplined with the weapon, a .22 round is going to HIT a zombie skull nearly every time at 50 yards. With a bolt-action model, you should be able to get off a clean shot about every 2 seconds. And if you prepped properly, you should have literally tens of thousands of rounds at your disposal. A larger, center-fire rifle will also do this job, and be a more reliable kill, but at the following cost: ammo that is at least 20x more expensive, report that that is way, way, WAY louder (thus attracting the attention of other undead), and the recoil is such that it is unsuitable for children or smaller-framed women to use. The .22 rifle is extremely accurate; even a novice shooter can learn to make a head shot at 25 yards in a short period of time. It is an "everyman weapon" that can be used to build an impromptu "anti-horde posse."

Reading a story where the hero improvised some armor from washers and iron wire. Butted the washers together and used the wire to tie them together. Seem to me it would provide protection against bites and some sharp objects.
Lead to further thought about what other materials could be used. Car floor mats would provide bite protection and limited cut protection, doubtful on stab protection. Cut to fit. Tire for a fixed position, fill with sand, gravel, dirt. Stack as high as desired, brace as necessary. Bolt together for ramming protection. Two rows, offset from each other to get rid of the weak point where they butt together. Other idea?

So I never saw this debate before today. I was reading a review on a Ruger .45, and there was a debate going on about whether or not to use the slide stop to drop the slide after inserting a fresh magazine.
I never thought about the wear and tear to the slide stop. At the range, I've done both. I've put in a fresh magazine, and pushed the slide stop down to drop the slide forward and push a fresh round forward. I've also pulled back on the slide to take the pressure off the stop, and then just let go of the slide. Does forcing the slide stop down really cause a significant amount of damage? Or is this one of those issues where I probably won't notice anything unless I'm firing a thousand rounds a week.

I know some military vehicles use gyroscopic stability on guns like the abrams and miniguns but I was wondering if you could use it to stabilize a rifle so you could stabily shoot from a standing position. Like in a tower. I know you could just rest the gun on the edge but it's difficult to move around the whole tower like that and it limits how close to the tower you can shoot.

Shot a S&W M&P 45c, and an M&P40, the M&P45C is a great gun for what it is designed for, concealed carry, and the M&P 40, I LOVE THIS GUN, best shooting I've ever done with a handgun(7 years worth of shooting) 50 rounds,15 yards. ALL within the chest of the target paper( including shots through the same hole.) My next gun is going to be an M&P40c, for concealed carry.

In my B.O.L., there is an old break-open weapon, that I assume to be a rifle, since it only has a single long barrel (in fact, it's got more barrel than I would ever need for a rifle).
The barrel is about 3-5 mm thick. There are also a few shotgun shells, I don't know which type. They have a red casing. I wondered if I could use the rifle to shoot a shotgun shell. Will it hold? Or blow up? If you need any more information about the weapon, tell me. Thanks in advance, wkwkwkwk1

It's a lot better for precision rifles to use a single hardened steel rod. It cost a little more then the aluminum peices but over time aluminum can get scratched and have grit embed in it. This can scratch your rifleing in the barrel to hell and cause the rifle to miss at 50 yrds.

Here's a fun little mental diversion for everyone to wrap their head around, just to get people thinking.
You have EXACTLY $1000 U.S. dollars to buy: A) One NEW rifle B) One NEW handgun C) One NEW shotgun All firearms you choose must be NEW, currently available (or currently backorderable) online at the time of your post. Prices MUST be up-to-date, as of 03/2013. You must provide links to each item you choose. I suggest using bitly.com to shorten your links. If any gun auction site is used (like Gunbroker.com), it must list a "Buy It Now" price, as this price will be used for the total. Shipping must be included in the grand total as well. For example, let's say you find a penny auction handgun on Gunbroker that has a $250 "Buy It Now" price with $50 shipping, it's a $300 handgun. The weapons must all be chambered in centerfire cartridges. No .22LR, .22WMR, etc. In addition, each weapon must include some form of sights. If you hypothetically picked a flattop AR with no sights and a Savage Axis, you'd better include links to proper sights, otherwise they're incomplete and invalid. Each entry must include a grand total, which *CANNOT* exceed $1000. No exceptions. After we get a few entries, we'll have a public vote to determine who picked the best armament loadout. If participation is good enough, I'm willing to offer up a small prize to the first and second place participants. Votes will only be accepted from site users with at least 50 contributions over the span of two months (to prevent account farming to defraud the voting.) Would you guys like me to provide a sample entry to show you what I'm looking for in your entry?

Since I've been a member I've always pushed firearms without a lot of recoil. .357 mag lever action rifles, .22lr rifles, 20 guage shotguns, AR-15s ect... I guess you could say that I like a firearm with light recoil and quick follow-up shots. Well I've went against that with my latest purchase, I bought a Mossberg Mariner 590 last week and with eight 12 guage 00buck shells in the tube and one in the pipe I think I might have finally earned a spot in the big boys with sore shoulders club. I didn't buy this shotgun for any other reason other than it's badass. Is that so wrong? The wheels are turning on what I want to do as far as accessories for this shotgun (You know me I can't ever leave anything stock) but I'll most likely keep things simple. I'm not even sure this thing needs a side saddle, I mean it'll already damn near hold two boxes of slugs.

I'm bringing up a handgun that I'm sure will get no respect from the 20 rnd. mag crowd. Hell with S&W revolvers that chamber 8 rounds and can be speed loaded in no time I doubt they'll get much love from the revolver guys either.
Single action revolvers are rarely used anymore except by handgun hunters and cowboy action shooters. They are painfully slow to reload and are bulky. Here is what I admire about them. After generations of new designs and improvements in astetics of handguns no handgun "points" like a single-action revolver. A well made SA is balanced perfectly. I like semi-autos and the practicality of them but to me handling one is like handling a brick. A Ruger SA with an eight inch barrel and a scope is impressive in its ability to land hits downrange. When you c*ck that hammer your trigger is very light and they fire crisp with no creep. I'd carry one even with all its drawbacks although I might also carry me a "brick" in a shoulder harness just for the sake of numbers. Six well placed shots made by a experienced shooter are worth as much as twenty herky jerky shots made by a mall ninja.

Today I had a discussion with my buddy. We have a weekly man-date at the range where we plow through 3 or 4 hundred rounds, secrete testosterone, and compete for bragging rights. I felt the need to warn him before I see him Sunday. Warn him that I bought a 9mm, not only a 9mm but a damned Beretta 92A1. We spent a few years overseas, logged a few thousand rounds behind the 92fs, and both agree we hate it. My opinion, too big for concealed carry, bore axis too high (excessive muzzle flip), wrong caliber, and the grip just feels weird, like helping a stranger pee. While perusing the firearms at the range today I had an itch to shoot something different, and I have a handful of holsters and a dozen mags I acquired in service and what not. So I bought it (evil you know kind of thing). Also I figured that 9mm would be cheaper to shoot. After I told my pal all of this he said.
“So you’re tellin’ me, you bought a platform you don’t like, in a caliber you don’t care for, don’t reload for, and can’t find ammo for, because you have holsters and mags for it that you haven’t touched in a year.” I replied. “When you put it like that, I sound like an idiot.” Anyone else have expensive regrets?
