My plan and a guide for those interested.

For my plan to be used you must be within traveling distance of a marina.

Requirements:
  • Reliable transportation;
  • Several cases of ammunition for each firearm;
  • At lest two tested and reliable firearms;
  • The usual survival equipment;
  • Ham radio (so you can network for resources and dating).

The quick and dirty explanation is to get to the marina and take a boat to a island you know is capable of sustaining society.

Part One - Preparation

The Boat

You need to learn to sail

You must buy a sail boat or learn to steal one (if you are willing to fix a boat up there are many boats that can be found for free)

You must have the boat at a marina. if there is any sort of mass evacuation the roads will be blocked of with stalled cars trying to tow a boat any distance is nearly impossible.

A motorized boat will not due fuel goes bad. electricity will probably be out which means all fuel pumps will be out of service. and they have a very limited range.

The island
it should have or had a population of 50 plus (any smaller and you will have trouble scavenging for the essentials)

must have a history of farming and edible wildlife

Approaching and landing on the island:
  • You must circle the island several times to asses if the island is infected;
  • Do not dock take a raft to the island ( do not leave it unguarded);
  • The ideal landing spot will have several hundred yards of open area (this allow you to engage any zombies);
  • Do not plan on staying on the island your initial landing is to search the island and start the process of killing any zombies.

Note on tactics
The idea when dealing with zombies is to engage them and fall back engage and fall back (fall back refers to going to a safe place they do not know of, can not get to, or a far enough distance that you have 20 minutes to regroup ) (a zombie within 100 feet of you means have let the zombies get to close and are very close to death if you do not leave the area now)

At a minimum you must search the island several times you do not want to stay on the island until you had found no zombies in your last three searches.

I live in the bay and use to live in SF. SF would be complete hell! If I were you, I would head south towards Santa Cruz by following the coast. Don't even try to stay in SF! Way to many people to worry about. The only thing SF would be good for is to maybe grab a few guns and food. Anything else will just screw you over in the end. Don't try to leave the land while in SF because either you'll be followed by crowds of desperate people wanting to survive, followed by the zed and risk being surrounded, or held up by other people trying to survive. I doubt you'll be able to get to wherever your boat is anyways. Follow the coast to the south and for sure you'll find a boat eventually.
