A Compendium of Survival Guides

So here we are writing a survival guide to the on coming Zombalypse. Only Mr. Brooks book stands against the on coming horde with us. But it isn't to say that some of the less situation specific guides cannot be of some relevance. Because survival is survival, right? And some of the guide writers have had to do just such a thing. So please make a list of links, titled appropriately and with a brief description. We will see what can and cannot be applied.

1) FM 27-76- Multi-service Procedures for Survival, Evasion, and Recovery. Helpful survival tips designed for softy type fly-boy. Should be good for civilians also. Written in the standard US Gov format of Field/Technical Manuals.

2) Survival- Based on the same principal as FM 27-76. It is written in great detail and has many illustrations. More civilian oriented guide.

3) Wilderness Survival- Once again based on the almighty FM 27-76. A helpful site with a forum and a nifty quiz. Take heed! The site is also trying to sell you a hard copy of FM 27-76, some knife and every piece of REI fleece known to man. Don't be fooled.

4) FM 3-97.6 and FM 3-97.61- These are field manuals for Mountain Operations and Military Mountaineering. The first a "beginner's guide," and the second the "expert's issue." For some this will be important.

5) FM 3-22.9 The field manual for basic rifle marksman ship. Some of the specifics only apply to weapons of the M16/AR-15 family. The fundamentals trigger squeeze and breath control apply to every firearm, period. Take note.

6) FM 3-25.26- Map reading and land navigation. Once you leave the city you can't count on every blade of grass being groomed to the north, here are the basics to using a USGS map and a lensatic compass. Certainly not a TOMTOM.

7) Useful Wild Plants Of The United States And Canada- This is a link to a website hosting a book on edible plants. It is broken into chapters and is easy to download. This is the most user friendly site I have found. It isn't just a pitch to sell you more hippie crap on alternatives to meat. Pictures and genus included. DON'T GO HUNGRY!

8) The SAS Survival Handbook - In my opinion, the best all-purpose survival book around. All climate types are covered, along with specific material for different world areas. B/W and color illustrations (mostly B/W) are extensively used to make the material as accessible as possible. All major necessary topics are covered, as well as a few of the more obscure (need to deliver a baby?). Edible and medicinal plants and how to prepare them, traps, shelter, navigation, first aid, etc. If you can only have one book, I'd recommend this one. In addition, it can now be found in a "pocket" sized version (assuming you wear cargo pants).

9) The Tom Brown Guide Series - Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival, Living With the Earth, and Nature Observation and Tracking give the reader a good deal of information interspersed with his naturalistic philosophy. Some very good information, and a secondary set of books that I would recommend any prospective survivor of the zombie apocalypse should read, but not comprehensive enough to make the go-bag.

10) The Art of War by Sun Tzu- The Commanding Officer's survival guide. The zombalypse will be a war, but a war like no other. Know how to conduct the basis of war and you have a fighting chance. A good read for the group leader. Military men all over the world swear by this book. This is a link to a free ebook copy of the original translation.

It doesn't seem like there are many survival websites listed on this wiki so i thought I'd add one of the ones that I've gone through and looks to be pretty decent. It's called Survival Topics and can be found at www.survivaltopics.com It covers survival kits, hunting and fishing, shelters, survival food, and fire! I know a website doesn't really help when Z-day comes but the skills you can learn will be useful and as Max Brooks says "Organize before they rise"

If you have the oppurtunity (this will probably apply to rural areas and maybe just Canada), pick up the manual for Ground Search and Rescue. I own one (as I'm a GSAR volunteer), and it has everything you need for survival. How to build shelter, how to traverse ALL landscapes, use advanced equipment, and how to use many if not all radio systems. It's the bomb.

Downside: Probably a bitch to find. Since I don't think there are many (if any) volunteer Search and Rescue groups in places like the US (mostly a police business).

I always keep a copy of both FM 21-76(Im guessing an older version of 27-76) and 12B10(Combat engineers manual) handy.
