I've been approached several times about how to get a decent optic attached to my AK-47 / SAR-1.
It's a fairly simple process, but most people are a little hesitate about just going off of what a Gun Catalog Ad tells them.
Here's my page on what to get, how to mount it, and get the most bang for the buck.

This page is dedicated to Mr. Alexhiggenbotham.
He finally got me off of my A** to get a page like this done.

NOTE: Areas Of Emphases have been highlighted via MS Paint or other method.
Sorry if it looks like Badgers A***.


1) Your AK variant MUST have the side rail attached. Mine came with it.
If yours didn't, you might have to drop some extra money on some Armorer Work.




2) Get a decent Side Mount System.
What you see below is the UTG Side Rail Mount.
You can get it from www.cheaperthandirt.com for $26 + shipping.

It works nice.



3) Your site.

For me, I'm a Close Quarters Battle guy.
I like my targets close enough to throw their dead Zed-Buddies at, so I got myself an EOTech Reflex Sight.
This one is the $400 varient. There is no NVG (Night Vision Goggle) option once it's activated.

I'm not a Sniper, nor a Marksman of Range.
I AM a former CavalryScout that can place a room full of people into an Ambulatory status in a Room/House/Urban Setting.
Hence the gear I have



4) What you will need are several Hex Keys. My EOTech came with its own Hex Key. The Side Mount System didn't.

HOWEVER, I have several Hex Key Sets. Highlighted is my Helping Hand Hex Key 7-Piece Set.
This set was free as it was handed to me by a friend. I'm sure there are comprible sets out there.
The Key you will NEED is the 5/32 size key.



5) Take said 5/32 key & begin to remove the screws from the UTG Side Rail Mount.

Do Not Lose The Tension Washers.




6) Once that is done place the screws to the side.



7) Grab your UTG Side Rail Mount & slide it into place.
Mind you, it may be a tight fit so a little "Love Tap" may be needed to get it into place.



8) Bingo! It's in place. Now, Grab them Screws & your 5/32 Hex Key!




9) Screw them in until you get a bit of resistance.
Then begin, from front to back, 1/2 turns until you get some real tension.
After that, Torque them 1/8 turn by 1/8 turn until you feel confident that said rail is in place.

NOTE: It's your choice to add ThreadLock or not. I don't.
It is worth mentioning that you should mark the point of 'Fitting' with some sort of Paint Marker.
I have mine memorized. It's your weapon, so it's your call.



10) Once the UTG Side Rail Mount is in place you can take your site of choice & place it on the top rail.

For me, I took the EOTech I Loosely placed it there.

Once I had a decent Sight Picture, I torqued it down.



11) It's been said that "Women are never wrong". If that's the case, look below.
