AMT BackupModel: AMT Backup
The Backup is another member of the large category of pocket pistols, small handguns meant to be carried in a pocket or a small, concealed holster as an emergency weapon. It's been through a number of manufacturers and sellers, including OMC, Arcadia Machine & Tool (where it gets its name), Galena Industries, and now High Standard. It's somewhat expensive for a pocket pistol (having been originally meant as a backup weapon for police). The gun is available in the original single-action form or the Backup II, which is double-action only. It's also available in a wide variety of calibers up to .45, giving it excellent power.

Where to find

The Backup is relatively pricey for such a small weapon at $200-250 (not including any fees for the necessary license to own/carry a handgun).

Complexity

The handgun is notorious for AMT's quality control: some guns are reliable and manufactured well, while others are poor in quality. The large calibers available give it more power than many pocket pistols at the cost of magazine capacity and recoil. The trigger pull on the double-action guns can also be as heavy as 8 pounds, making it safe but greatly decreasing accuracy and speed. One bit of caution to take is that the firing pin is not blocked from the chamber and the hammer is concealed, so carrying the weapon with a round in the chamber may be unsafe.

Controls

  • Safety: Located on the left side of the frame. Push up for SAFE, down for FIRE. Be warned that on some guns, if the safety is even a tiny bit down it will turn off.
  • Magazine release: Located behind the trigger on the left side.
