Death

The most common variation is that one shot, anywhere, counts as death. The player then yells "hit!" "dead man!" "OW!" or something similar, holds his gun up in the air, then walks to the dead area.

Most long scenarios will have respawn rules. The death area will be on a timer, and when it runs out, everybody is released. The timer may need a certain number of people to start, or may just run continuously and release at intervals.

ie: Respawn runs on a three-minute timer, starting when the box fills with ten people.

Medic
A popular rule is to allow player medics. When a player is "killed" they lay down rather then walk to the safe zone. There are several complex variations of this, but the general rule is that one of several designated medics must be in close proximity for a period of time. In some places, the medics are the only ones allowed respawn to keep them from being eliminated early on.

ie: 30 guys each side, 3 medics per. Two hand touch for 10 seconds to heal.

A slightly more realistic variation is where a BB hit disable the limb. Repeated chest hits or a headshot are instantly lethal.
Medics have a set number of bandages they can use to revive someone. A problem with this scenario is that it must be played with absolute honesty.

Another scenario yet is where the medic or player carry wound envelopes. Upon being hit, the medic tears open the envelope or pulls out a card.
He must follow the instructions inside to revive his patient. This can be combined with the limb disable rule.

ie: Sucking chest wound: you must apply a chest seal and sit the patient upright for a minute.

ie: Bleeding limb: apply direct pressure for 30 seconds and apply a bandage.
