Benelli M4 Super 90Model: Benelli M4 Super 90
This semi-automatic shotgun was designed specifically for the United States Military to answer their request for a new 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun. The M4 was accepted as the M1014 and is currently in use with the US Marine Corps.

The M4 uses the "Auto Regulation Gas Operated" (ARGO) system, a simple short-stroke system used on their later R1 semi-automatic rifle. It comes standard with a Picatinny rail on top of the receiver and military-style ghost ring sights. For the commercial sector, the M4 comes with a non-adjustable 4+1 capacity and a solid stock; despite the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban having ended, they continue to refuse to sell the collapsible stock to civilians. Collapsible stock conversions are sold for $150 to military and law enforcement entities and direct-shipped from Italy.

There are three configurations for government sale: the M4 Entry with a 14-inch barrel, the M4 with an 18.5-inch barrel, and the M1014, which is an M4 with military stamping.

Where to find

The M4 is quite pricey as a civilian shotgun at a recommended retail price of $1800. However, you get what you pay for and the M4 is a generally good investment if you have the money for one.

Complexity

The ARGO gas system is designed to be very simple, with only 4 parts. It's also self-regulating depending on the power of the shell, preventing jams with shells to low in power to cycle the action. The M4 can be worked as a bolt action for low power shells, like bean bags. As a weapon designed for military use, it's excellent for dirty field conditions.
