Benelli NovaModel: Benelli Nova
The Nova at first seems like a generic pump-action shotgun, meant to compete with the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500. Outwardly, it definitely looks like nothing more than another competitor on a saturated market. What makes this shotgun unique (apart from the famed fit and finish that Benelli provides) is the one-piece receiver and stock, which makes for a single, very strong piece of steel-reinforced polymer. Any builder will tell you that one piece is often simpler and stronger than multiple pieces, and that works just as well for the Nova. The synthetic stock and receiver unit is water resistant as well, which makes it excellent for marine or swampy environments.

Along with the standard Nova, the Supernova comes with a removable stock rather than the one-piece (allowing for it to be swapped for a pistol grip) and comes standard with the recoil reducer, which can be purchased and fitted to the Nova; the reducer is a 14 oz. tube of mercury placed in the stock, which helps absorb the recoil before it hits the shooter's shoulder. The Nova is available in a variety of barrel and magazine lengths, and it's equally useful out on a duck hunt as it is in the hands of a SWAT officer.

Where to find

The Nova has achieved popularity with hunters and other sportsman, and the price of $400 to $500 is perfectly reasonable for shooters who desire that level of quality.

Complexity

The Nova's popularity comes from the strong, very simple design with a relatively small amount of parts. The one-piece stock/receiver adds to this strength, and the controls are relatively standard for shotguns.

Controls

List all controls in a bullet point format, with their location and how to manipulate them; what does what, basically. Example below.

  • Safety: Cross-bolt behind the trigger. Push left to right for SAFE, right to left for FIRE.
  • Cartridge stop lever: Located on the forend.
  • Action release locking lever: Located on the right side of the trigger guard. If the weapon is cocked, push it in to allow for the forend to be pulled back.

    Cannot be done.

Condition Three. Chamber empty, magazine full, hammer down, safety off.
