Beretta Model 1934Model: Beretta Model 1934
When someone mentions a Beretta, this isn't exactly the gun everyone has in mind, yet you can still see the heritage of the famed Beretta 92 that the US military currently uses in its design. As the name suggests, it was first produced in 1934 and saw service with the Italian military starting in 1937. As a characteristic Beretta design it has the famous open slide and protruding barrel that would later be seen on the Beretta 92. This same gun was used to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi.

The Romanian military also purchased the weapon during World War II for use and even saw some use with the Germans, and production continued all the way to 1991. The Beretta Model 1935 is simply a 1934 rechambered in .32 ACP designed as a compact pistol.

Where to find

The 1934 is surprisingly cheap for a vintage handgun, with a decent-quality weapon running as low as $300 or even lower. The main difficulty is finding it in a firearms store, so your best bet is online.

Complexity

A typical Beretta design, the 1934 is very reliable and extremely simple to maintain. It is said that the service life of a properly maintained gun is over a century, and it's not long until this claim can be proven. One note that annoys some users is that the slide snaps forward when the magazine is removed (the magazine is what holds the slide back when empty), necessitating re-cocking the slide every time you reload.

Controls

  • Safety: Located on the left side of the receiver behind the trigger; push up for FIRE, down for SAFE. When pushed all the way up, the safety acts as a slide stop.
  • Magazine release: Located on the heel of the butt behind the magazine.
