Your Name: Taylor Neal, Currently E-1 USAF
Your "handle" should we look for you on the radio waves or web: Biohazard / Biohazardouswithin / Bio
Your location: Currently: Montevallo, Alabama
Tell us:
·Is your plan dependent on zombies in your home town, or anywhere?(startVirtually typingany here...)US town, or at least towns near major/minor city center.
·Will you be staying in your home or headed somewhere else?
Two locations. Both require work and fortification, and survivors.
·If you're heading out, how do you plan to get there?
Drive as far as possible in my Honda Civic, then hump it on foot if my pre-determined pathways are congested.
·Got anyone you want to take with you?
I have a close network of friends involved in this survival plan, so yes. About Five.
·How will you communicate with the outside world, or do you plan to go the hermit route?
Communication with the outside world will be by use of HAM radio, of which I am vaguely familiar. CB Radio. And via the internet for the duration that it is active.
·How are you planning to get food and water?
The first stage of my plan is to barricade myself and however many survivors I have located in the closest Wal*Mart store to my current location. Food and Water is bountiful in Wal*Mart, as is ammunition, firearms, clothing, and every necessary item needed in my survival.
·What's your weapon of choice? Do you need to reload that thing? Gotta plan for that?
The weapons I currently have plentiful amounts of ammunition are: A Winchester 30-06 700 Model Rifle, (20 Available rounds. Stocking up soon.) A Winchester 20 Ga. Shotgun, with unknown amounts of ammunition, (At least five full boxes of Buck Shot rounds.) A Remington Level Action 30-30, (Only 6 rounds available.) And finally an array of Melee weapons that are as follows: A 15'' Crowbar, a fiberglass handle woodsplitting axe, several collectors swords (short duration weapons.) And whatever else I can find to stock in my vehicle.
·Got a survival philosophy?
Kill or be killed. Protect my loved ones first, but leave them prepared.
·Are you willing to hook up with other survivors?
After ensuring the survivors I pick up aren't infected, yes. Even if that means having them buck-'nekkid', and searching every inch of their body. If said person is unruly they can comply, or be left to die.
·Is your plan based on a book/movie/blog/scientist we may have heard of?
Yes. Max Brooks is the wordly god of Zombie survival. Many of his ideas originate from his survival guide, but a great number of these ideas are all mine and friends.
·The complete plan:
Wal-Mart has several important functions. The store has the following: An abundance of canned foods, as well as fresh foods for as long as the power holds out; a large variety of beverages, including long-time water holds; clothing and hygeine (I doubt this is a worry); Basic medical treatment supplies; and last but not least: Sporting Goods, which has your Rifles, loads of ammunition, and bows, arrows and other necessities for survival.
Grocery Stores. Grocery stores are going to be your second best option. You're not going to be able to barricade yourself in half as well as you could Wal-Mart, but you do have access to a fairly-large amount of food.
Hardware Stores. If you can mesh a WalMart close to a Hardware store, you're made. Lowes/Home Depot. You can thoroughly reinforce the entrances, and make yourself safe. However; if it's only a Hardware store, you're going to die of starvation pretty quick.
Shopping Malls are a ridiculous thought. Way too many entrances, and all of the food requires cooking, or will run out/spoil quickly. Once you're out of food you have to move. Your best bet is again: Wal-Mart.
So back to Wal*Mart. What doesn't Wal-Mart have? The following is a well-planned step-by-step guide for your survival at Wal Mart. Or a general guide at least.
So, hoping you've not amassed a 100-person army of unbitten survivors inside your chosen Wal-Mart haven, you're going to last a while. In your first hour in the store, you're going to have to seperate.
First: Secure the entrances from basic entry, and make sure that no more gruesome ghouls get in your fort. Clear it. Once you've cleared your fort, seperate. Half of the survivors need to begin working on fortifying all of the entrances to the store. Your best bet is likely to be moving shelving to the doors, then, using the hardware dept., screw the shelves into and around the doors. Then follow up by fortifying with registers, buggies and anything available. Make sure to leave one door relatively unfortified. A good suggestion is to use one of the bay doors in the back, or one of the steel doors, the problem with the bay doors is, however, that they close incredibly slowly. And then: The other half needs to go out and find all empty containers and fill them with tap water for the long road ahead, save for...
If you were smart enough to have brought along an abundance of gasoline. You need to store it somewhere away from heat and flame. Sounds like a warning label. If you weren't smart enough to get gasoline, you're going to have to make a trip to the nearest Wal-Mart gasoline store, and QUICK. Fill up all the gas tanks in the store with gasoline and make it back, through the one entrance/exit you left fairly unbraced.
Okay. Now that you're secured inside, with your tap water and your gasoline. Know your environment. First step: Find the Generators. Usually they're in the back of the store, or on the roof. 9/10: They're in the back, in a seperate room that's easy to access, and sometimes have a subtle amount of pre-stored combustables. Take your gasoline to this new room.
Second: Get all of the weaponry assigned to individuals, or in a place that it would be easy to get to incase of fortification penetration, or one of your buddies is infected and decided not to tell you.
Third: Re-Assessment of Security. Make sure that all of the entrances are secured.
Fourth: Nestling in. Now, after you've done the above comes the time that you get ready to relax in this new haven for as long as the food endures. If you're wanting personal space and a bit of privacy, then my suggestion is to either: Move shelving around to isolate yourself, and give walls. If you're not wanting to shift the whole store around, then you've got tents that you can put up and even blow up air mattresses. You've got sheets, comforters and pillows on the home aisles, plus towels if you run out of the other.
Fourth-and-a-half: Food consumption. You're going to run out of power eventually. Some idiot will hit a telephone pole, or there just won't be anyone to monitor power consumption, and power will keel out. The generators. Someone will have to crank (if they're not automatic) the generators, and make sure they stay full of fuel. And, too, eventually the fuel in the generators will have all been expended, and you'll be in the dark. However, daylight will yeild light through the skylights. And at night time you can use flashlights, candles, and cooking lanterns. Also: You will be able to use a camping stove to cook your meals, and heat things up.
NOTE: Until power runs out. You will be able to cook food in the Wal Mart Deli.
Five: Consumption of Perishables. The food that expires quickly will have to be the first thing you eat. Produce, breads, and meats, unless you're able to reolocate the meat to the freezers. (Until Power Loss) Produce will be the first to go.
The following was written after this original plan, extending the time after your one-year fortified stay in Wal-Mart:
So let's say you've gotten your hands on a moving truck. During your first week, you're going to want to make this moving truck (at least 16' long) full of supplies. Food, water, ammunition, flashlights, batteries. Everything you can fit inside. The more trucks the better, however, fuel will become an issue.
So, back to my initial idea: You've run out of all of the necessary supplies, save for that which you've stored on your moving truck(s). Wal*Mart has an automotive division that has an area for tire and oil changes, and battery work. You can use those parking garages for loading up the vehicles you plan on using, and for vehicle maintenance.
Again, back to the plan. You'll have to gather your party up, all injuries having healed during your year (or so) encapsuled in Wal*Mart. Arm everyone capable of shooting accurately, and put them on window duty. Your convoy is going to need a runner, (a sedan-type car in the lead, giving a good lead to relay terrain), other vehicles of choice, followed by your supply trucks, and then ended by a truck with a loaded bed of anyone who can fire a good shot.
You've got a drive ahead of you wherever you decide to go. Small stops along the way just aren't going to be smart, simply because you're not going to be able to fortify every stop you make. You're going to want to find somewhere safe, secluded, and easily barricaded.
The Florida Keys will be my place of my final (hopefully) placement. It will take at least fourteen hours to arrive in the Keys. When you arrive, there will be some work to be done. You'll have to find a way to block off the bridge to the Keys, the main one that connects the mainland to the Islands. You absolutely cannot destroy it. Freshwater runs across the bridge, and that will be necessary to your first few days of survival -- that is, if there's any freshwater left in the pipes.
You'll have to then spend the next while clearing the islands of any infected. And I do mean while. You can guarantee you'll be spending full days, in shifts, clearing the infested. And be entirely sure that you don't go alone. That's a ticket for death. As you move along, checking every nook and cranny, you can be sure that there won't be any more coming in behind you.
Someone will have to allow survivors across the bridge, inspect them, and then allow them inside.
Eventually, you will have made it to Key West, the southernmost point in the US. From there you'll have access to Key West International. You'll be able to use planes, and access boats for patrols, and for fishing for sustenance.
In time, the captured islands can become a survivor colony. And as the numbers grow, in time, life will progress. Births, deaths, and so on. Fields for vegetables will develop. Only the buildings that are taken care of will continue to exist, while the others collapse.
It will take a long time to recover, but in your new colony, life will find a way.
