My uncle is former marine core and he used to fly helicopters for the military. He's been living with me for a few months now until he can afford a place of his own, but it made me think: Would a helicopter be a good idea to have in a zombie apocalypse (providing you had someone like my uncle who knows how to fly them)? I think that once you were bugged in, you could use it as an easy source of transportation to search for food or supplies in a wider radius, and it could also be used as a quick escape if you needed to bug out. For fuel, I'm pretty sure helicopters take standard Jet A fuel, or maybe diesel. Either way, you could find the fuel at the airport and just fly right in, drop down, and load up while you have your partner(s) covering your back.
What do you guys think?

Excellent places would be somewhere with lots of food and water easily accessible inside, weapons and ammo inside, and idea lookout points.A good place can be a Folgers,a Wal-Mart if the doors are barricaded,or similar place.

Most people when thinking of a good shelter think of home but home is not always the best place to be when in a zombie apocalyps.
Why not ? Why because most homes are very open for example, A house usually has many windows a few doors and alout of places are not easy to be watched at most times like basement windows roof windows ext. For anouther example Appartments. This is usually a closed environment but also a location mostly to be avoided in these situations, Why ? Appartments usually have only 1 exit good te defend but once breached no escape possible. Anouther reason why is because appartments are usually in crowded buildings where an infection usually spreads faster, and last but not least is when people start to loot they usually go to crowded area's. What to look for in a shelter : A closed environment with a max of 2 -3 exits this is easily secured and will give you more time to do outher things than always need to watch your back. How to choose a right building with the proper exits : Most people would say Malls, Shopping centre's ext but i would rather choose a place where theres a high security level and not alout of valuable goods in the situation where food, clothes and water are most needed, Like : Banks, Security Agency's, Police Departments ext. What to look for in securing an exit : First of all you will need to barricade it but also be able to Reopen it in a fast amount of time 2-3 minutes max Also Two door exits, Not next to each outher but on opposite sides of eachouther with security locks for example when 1 door is open the outher one can't be opened. Also when choosing an exit it would be very convenient if the exit would have the character of a V shape where the V point is the exit and the tips of the V Are pointing to the outside, this gives Defence improvements because it means there is a delay when entering with groups also easily boobytrapped.

I think that if you could, you should build a palisade since this can be used as protection and a trap by taking sharp sticks and sticking them outwards where the zombies head could be, thus taking out the brain and saving your munitions

there is never a end just new uses such as a worn dowen tires(mud helps this) can be used as a brick to build with broken dowen cars can be used to make a last ditch barricade and motors can be melted dowen into something new

Okay, so I've been thinking about improvised weapons, which lead me to think about improvised barricades. My home is /not/ the ideal fortress, but if I got some pots and pans, my antique .410 single barrel (inherited), shovel, knives, nightstick/baton, and hatchet for weapons, I could cover barricading most of the house with duct tape, cabinet doors, drawers, furniture, and whatever else to improvise barricades.
I could even tear legs off chairs and sharpening them, sticking sharpened sticks, etc. in places as simple traps, maybe even weakening the floor in places as a traps. Drill/stab small holes in doors to look through and to stab long, pointed things through at any oncoming zombies. I would have to cardboard and styrofoam up the windows to conceal any light or shadows. I would of course use the phone and computer to contact anyone I could, particularly family, and I would probably only bug in until the panic was over. Soon I'm getting a better gun, so that will be a great help to the plan. So, let's disscuss bug-in plans, weapons we have at home that we would defend a barricade with, and improvised barricade materials, shall we? EDIT: I forgot to mention grabbing all my canned goods.

I will give you my backgorund information so you know ruffly where i am coming from. I live in England (for the record only anti terrorist police carry guns, normal people aren't allowed). I run my own property development company. Ever since i was a kid i have been security paranoid, i alway's promised myself when i had money i would live in a bunker. So when i could afford it i had a bunker built around £300 per square foot 12inch thick concrete walls, underground one escape tunnel. It is designed to withstand an indirect nucleur blast (6 miles away) and has it's own air filltration system and plumbing, for chemical warfare. I live in devon with my family (no wife or kids). It was designed as my main residence so the interior is really nice, i could propably survive about 6months on the food and water if i rationed it. It has it's own backup generator so i would not need to really on the grid. Above it is protected with a 8ft high steel chainlink fence 2ft burried below the ground, with cameras on both the inside and outside (closed circuit only viewable from my office). I have a collection of crossbows as we are not allowed guns in England. My question is should i let other survivors apart from my family in the shelter or would that be too dangerous.
P.S. I know i am paranoid but i'll will be the one laughing if anarchy breaks out or Z day happens. I am new to the site so sorry if i have asked a stupid question or have called things by the wrong name.

I think that building a mote of some kind would be good, if you have the right equipment, such as a backhoe or such. while a lot of people don't have these things, if you did, would it be worth building one. if a zombie stumbles into it and it is dug deep enough then wouldn't they drown. saves you the ammo/energy/chance of getting hurt.

Im new to this site and you guys do have some great ideas. You've made me think up some cheap easy ideas. Just remember there is tons of stuff but keeping it simple is best.
Laying old tires in tall grass/weeds/brush is a great idea (found it on another thread). String layers of barbwire among it at different heights to keep it from tangleing. Lay it in zig-zag patterns in grass/weeds/brush. Barbwire fences will help slow them up so you have more time to engage. Pallisades, rock walls, dirt walls, moats, barriers of cars. What ever you have will work. Just set it up to protect you IE bunkers. Or barriers to slow them down. As for a flare via a trip wire is good but if you have wild animals or large livestock. You dont want it set off by accident and waste a precious flare or alert someone to your presense or defense. A flare can be seen for miles and if its a air flare people over the hill will get a bearing on your hide/base. Solar/motion sensor lights are a good thing for main roads, trails, and close up defense. If you have power use spot lights hooked up to motion sensors. Even a few for manual operation would work to help blind and pinpoint the intruders. Old cars lights hooked up to old batteries, sliced into some solar panels would work. Im experimenting with some of those walk way lights that are sloar powered. Im hooking the sloar parts to a car battery then hooking it to some motion sensor lights. Whatever you use remember kids, pets, livestock, & local wild life can set them off. So set them up with this in mind. The best early warning system is observation and listening post with live, awake people. To comunicate with your outposts get some military surplus field phones and wire. You can then bury or string the wire in the trees. But the idea is (with rechargeable batteries) you have a secure non-airwaves comunications. Cant be jammed or listenened to. Any more ideas?

heres the scenario:
you and your family is holed up in a single story 3 bedroom house with attached garage. there is empty lots (undeveloped) on both side with pine trees and an empty wooded lot across the street its about 3 acres big. you are expecting bandits to come F-up your sh*t. you have the only weapon in your house. do you: A. hole up in the house with your family and fight off the bandits B. hide out across the street, to fight off the bandits C. hide out in the empty lots next door to fight off the bandits. I personally like option B because it draws the bandits fire away from my family/home and towards a vacant lot. but i would also be responsible if my shots hit my family/home. what do you think?

Ok so u and 2 of your buddies are holed up in a 2 story house on the corner of a street you have 2 12gauge shotguns with 50 Rounds and a handgun of your choice with 100 rounds. You and one of your friends go to a shooting range at least twice a month and shoot with 12ga shotguns your other friend has never shot a gun. You have destroyed the stairs to the second floor but u have a rope ladder u can use to get down. Across the street is a grocery store with a good amount of food left in it. The house to the right of the one you're in might have some survivors but u don't know for sure. Down the street is a gun shop and across from that is a construction site with ,obviously, construction materials and a pickup truck that may or may not have gas in it. Unfortunately u are running low on food. U have enough to keep 2 people going for a couple weeks before you run out. The area you're in is not overrun with zombies but u can always see a couple on the street when u look out. What do u do?

I was thinking that if you have multiple floors you could use mattresses or couch cushions to block those staircases. They wouldn't last forever of course, but it might last long enough for you to put other furniture barricades.

you really don't want any other people in your house in less you make quaritine area(a place where you stay if you have a diesease or risk) but you need to board up your house and leave an open little space to shoot the zombies. i would but propane tanks out to shoot when zombies come. always have gas hidden somewhere so looters( people who break in and steal your supplies) don't get it, the reason you would wanna do this is because if you needed to escape you could. always wear a approtiate clothing like masks, gloves, long sleeved shirts, blue jeans, boots with your jeans tucked in them. ammo, water, and food are the most important resources.
i hoped this helped you , bigd730

Im 13(almost 14 in 6 more months) In my house we only own Kitchen knives and 1 hammer. We have ramen noodles and about 8 bottles of water, since i cant make a gun :P nor can i purchase one i would most likely be defensless, most people own dogs(can they be infected)and there old people :P.Theres a local church(really near)that has a hose which owns tons of water.and for god sake THERE IS NO NEAR GUN SHOP!,i would try to barracade by using doors, using the tub, breaking down some of the walls and use pipes to fight a littile while but im sure as hell am not being a hero,i barely wieght anything(i wieght 70 pounds)but i would try to survive till winter.Theres a 60 year old woman,a men in his 50's,a 15yr old boy(my bro) a 16yr girl(my sis) .a fat women whos in her 20's(cough*fresh meat*cough) and her son whos 3,and me who is 13 :P.Then it would be easiest to stop zombies,we own a radio just in case for attacks and we could get the family...we have a corner-store but its not barracaded at all,and for god sake SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO SURVIVE,(tthe 20yr old stuff isnt important)if i was 20 i would keep a hiding spot for 6 pistols and 1 ak-47, hiking gear, some Granular calcium hypochlorite,Potassium permanganate, iodine to purify water and kill harmfull germs and some barb wire,a fence (and have secret spot if i have young kids,I would keep a long and high area of defense to travel. after this find survives(i would fking strip them down to make sure there not infected no matter how old they are)

I used to always think that zombies were just made up stuff, but I read the Zombie Survival Guide and changed my point of view. My parents won't let me buy weapons of any kind but I need a plan that will fulfill the needs of 5 people, parents, me, 9-year old sister, and 3-year-old sister. Only things that are somewhat weapons are a couple of kitchen knives, a hatchet (we go camping a lot), a couple aluminum and wooden bats, and about five small pocket knives (max blade length 4in.). There is a church and a building that used to be a Ralph's nearby. Please help me!
