Everyone is debating what type of virus will bring rise to Z-Day, everything from a mutated form of rabies to a form of Ebola. All of these theories are very interesting and I am not disputing them at all. However, the first Night Of The Living Dead movie points towards a possible celestial event that is bringing rise to the zombies. This quote of a news report from the movie states “one scientist is certain that it is the result of radiation emanating from a Venus Space probe that exploded in the Earth's atmosphere.” Also in the movie the newly deceased, weather bitten or not, are coming back to life. Another news report states that there is no time to bury the newly deceased, there shall be no funerals…for the dead are coming back to life. Of course I know this is just a movie however after reading a lot of entries pretty much all of the users including myself have taken bits from several zombie era movies and applied them to their theories. So being the open minded individuals that we all are, who’s to say that Z-day couldn’t start from some sort of celestial or extraterrestrial event.
Tell me what you thing about this theory

McSkullcracken: This theory isn't that far fetched. The radiation brought to Earth by a celestial body crashing could have an effect on deceased human brains that causes them to shamble about in search of human flesh, particularly the brain, to eat. I believe the reason that most of us use a virus or some other contagion as the cause of the dead reanimating is that the affects of disease are more easily understood than the effects of radiation would be. I mean, if it were radiation, wouldn't animals be affected as well? Almost all the viral causes exclude animals from reanimation, though I believe one of the Living Dead films had a canine zombie. Overall, the only weakness radiation has as a cause of zombie uprisings is that it is far less likely that radiation would have such unique and uniform results. But then maybe this is a strange, new type of radiation not yet seen on Earth.
copping1000: I agree there could be certain types of rock which radiate special unseen types of radiation. These rocks could be found on other planets and may come to earth in the form of meteors. The problem with radiation is it would ether turn every one into zombies or only the recently dead. Radiation wouldn't allow people bitten by zombies to become zombies. Unless the radiation affected a type of virus already on earth. But thats going into the zombie virus area.

McSkullcracken: A radiation mutated virus, that is a possibility I have not heard before. Nice thought, copping1000.

Springatron: Radiation of all kinds could have adverse affects on the DNA and RNA of the human body. Remember that radiation is any form of a byproduct radiating away from it's source. Normally we think nuclear, but it is radio waves, sunlight, gas and everything else, essentially. A good example is RF (Radio Frequency) Radiation over time or in great enough power effects the formation of y chromosomes in the fertile man. Essentially taking his ability to produce male offspring. So who isn't to say that some alien element can't reanimate the dead, or change the living.

MY theory on this theory works along the same lines as cancer. Bear with me. What is some kind of radiation messed up the DNA structure of your cells right? Normal cell division in the human body takes place and the old cells die being replaced by the new ones. With cancer, most of the time, the old cells don't die and dissipate, or they attack other cells around them to replicate themselves. This is all caused by damaged DNA. So maybe every one washed by the radiation has damaged DNA and their cells aren't dying but they aren't replicating either they just keep on existing even after organelle failure. The same is happening in your brain and the cells are losing the ability to store information, the last things to go usually are instinct. Instinct happens to be all zombies operate on. The problem here is that my understanding of cancer might have become flawed since my days in cellular biology and my understanding of cellular biology might have flawed since I took the class. Last flaw is this theory doesn't explain turning by bites.

It's all the gods playing evil tricks with humanity I tell you. The great old ones.

Vanrulzz:My theory for a Celestial event would not be radiation, but a large amount of comet dust that people breath in, it kills them slowly, then - BAM! Don't know how but they are zombies.

roxas33: Not radiation. Radiation is lethal most of the time and is more likely to cause mutations then turn people into zombies. If it comes from outer space it will probably be viral.

GunGamer:
If you use common sense, zombification is actually some kind of mutation. This may explain zombification due to radiation.

Spraymachine: I think that it will originate in an unborn baby. So here is the story: A prego woman is about 4m into the ordeal when she catches some sort of nasty virus. She is then exposed to a lot of radiation somehow. The nasty virus that infected her and her baby is mutated and can overwhelm the hosts because radiation also caused a decrease in the immune systems efficiency. So here comes the baby! Baby is delivered in the hospital, everyone is happy that it managed to survive birth. The new father is holding his baby smiling when the baby coughs a mucus and some goes into the dads mouth. Daddy feels very sick the next day, and is coughing a lot (a lot of T-virus that is!). Eventually he is walking down the street when he gets an involuntary urge to cough in someone's face, except blood comes out this time. The infection starts.
Sparktrog: I'd have to say that this is a good theory considering that any kind of radiation that harms the mother has an almost 100% chance to affect the baby. Unluckily if the radiation is too much for the baby's growing immune system it would just die before anything could spread. Plus a human unborn baby has the strange ability to fight off a lot of foriegn invaders or regrow lost cells at an alarming rate. If it was some sort of alien bacteria or virus that somehow got into the mother's body and went through the umbilical cord into the baby then this might possibly happen.

Andy REDDSON: “Celestial” is the only way a world-wide overnight pandemic could occur; Whether it’s a foreign (alien) substance (ala “Night of the Comet” or the original Andromeda Strain”) or a terran-born substance accidentally or deliberately transported into orbit, then re-deposited (a mutated virus on a satellite brought back to earth, or perhaps part of a deliberate militry action), to reach the kind of catastrophy implied in all zombie movies and novels, that is world-wide, it would most certainly have to be brought in from space. There simply is no other way to create that sort of disaster before it got locked down (by locking up a city, if necessary).
