All of you have heard of my concept to tear-down remote satellite trucks to re-establish communications over shorter distances; Now, consider the use of balloons to create a new generation of coms sats.
The Cameron R-650 gondola of the Breitling Orbiter 3 (the balloon that made the world’s first orbital circumnavigation) weighed 4,400 lb (2,000 kg) empty; We can safely assume she was between 3 and 5 times that loaded and sealed, though specific details have not been forthcoming. She flew at as much as 37,313 ft (11,373m, or just over 7 miles) using a Rozier balloon. MILSTAR Block I weighs ~10,000 lb (4,500 kg) total. If you combine these two concepts together, you could, at least in theory, establish a series of “tether balloon” satellites capable of relaying comms signals, including cellular phone and internet signal, possibly trans-Atlantic, and most certainly trans-Bering. If nothing else, it would create a stopgap comms network until the skin jobs could be defeated and proper satellite network could be re-established.
