Communication will take many forms once the grid is down. Some will have generators (the lucky few who have a location capable of defense immediately, the military) most will not though (I believe anyway.) I plan to carry a Grundig Satellite 750. It weighs about 5 pounds, and runs on 4 "D" batteries. It picks up am/fm/shortwave/longwave/sattelite/HAM. If anyone talks I'll be able to listen. There are devices out there that will let you talk also, but most are AC powered, and in my mind useless. There are smaller units also, but most are only capable of receiving either satellite, or shortwave, AM/FM.
Morse code may be helpfull to learn if you don't already know. Banging on something, if in a defendable position, or lights, will likely be used again.
Stakes with messages buried under them, virtually anything MAY be used...but if there's a way, talking will be the first I think, so I want to be able to hear it if it happens.
I don't advocate the particular device I'm using, I just found that if I simply say "a portable receiver" I will be hit with which ones, or it wouldn't work because of ____. hahaha
