Crash-Course in Guerrilla Combat

INTRODUCTION

Hello, boys and girls!

I appreciate the quick (and positive) response to my suggestion to make this page, and I apologize for how long it took to finish.

I could make a big brouhaha about the effectiveness of guerrilla tactics, and I will. Consider the Viet Cong, or Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Heck, even the Nazis, in their early days. Che wrote several publications on guerrilla warfighting, and an amount of the information in this report will be based on these. I prithee, good people, take note that whilst compiling this tome, I art wearing a smoking jacket my head attire consists of a fez. Forsooth! ‘twere a mere joke!

DISCLAIMER

This is necessary (for my sake), so don’t edit it out. I’m too paranoid to leave it out.

Section I - I – GUERRILLA WEAKNESSES

I feel that It’s important for you to know the weaknesses of your enemy – or yourself :O – before I start outlining tactics. These are just some examples, there will be more issues than those outlined here.

a.
Limited Personnel and Resources. In the context I’m giving this, isn’t it obvious why? Take note that if you’re a marauder, you might have a lager force than the people that you’re attacking, in a post-apocalyptic world. Maybe. Difficulty in replacing casualties and in getting supplies will limit his (the guerrilla’s) operations. The anti-guerrilla force should take advantage of this by capturing supplies, and, basically, destroying as many of the guerrillas as they can.

b.
Individual factors. In other words, stress. Deary, me, and egad! Shucks, who’da guessed!?! This is an obvious one, but I still gotta mention it. Even in normal times, the nature of a guerrilla fighter’s life advocates stress. Even more so in an outbreak of Zacks. In regular times, guerrillas have to contend with nature, lesser numbers, nasty living conditions, bad food, criminal treatment if captured, constant combat, and a hostile environment, plus a plethora of other morale-killing issues. This should be taken advantage of by the anti-guerrilla force. Who’da thunk it?

c.
Operational Factors. Operational weaknesses could include security, which needs a lot of resources, and slows down responsiveness. C’mon, think about it; I won’t explain. There could be bases that are hard to capture and maintain, which could thin out their resources, or a lack of resources to operate high-tech equipment they have kept or captured.

Wowie, that’s that. Now, let’s cover advantages, followed up by Mao’s Principles. These four Principles are the pillars of guerrilla warfare.

Section I – II Guerrilla Strengths

The reason that I’m not launching right into tactics, is that I’m of the opinion that you should understand guerrillas and the structure of guerrilla warfare, before hand. If you don’t like it, bite me. Or, you could just skip ahead. OMGROTFL!

a. Intelligence. I don’t mean how smart they are, I mean knowledge of the enemy. The need for secrecy – kept for survival – in most guerrilla organizations can make government penetration (that being the entering of a government agent into the guerrilla group), and disruption of these networks quite difficult. It would be nigh on impossible in the context this is given. I say government, because in most normal times this is the enemy of the guerrillas involved (ever heard of freedom-fighting?). However, the counterguerrilla forces can carefully analyze the systems and the structure of the guerrilla force. There’s also pattern-analysis, which is determining the pattern in which the guerrillas attack or move. For example, the guerrillas capture a power-station outside of a small town, which is being used as a military army depot. They then intercept, and destroy several supply convoys, and then destroy the bridge the convoys require to get to into town. Thereafter, according to a recon team, the guerrillas move to a position south of the town. It could have just been harassment earlier, but it now stands to reason that the guerrillas are planning an attack. This is a very simple example, in the context of normal times. The guerrillas can counter counter-intelligence, by comprehensive use of deception, operation security, and communication security.

b.
Knowledge. The guerilla’s knowledge of his terrain (in his home turf) and of the local population (in normal times, and certain Zack-infested instances) are a great aid in his struggle. I won’t talk about the human factor, but I will discuss terrain knowledge, but not much. This terrain knowledge is mainly applicable when there is an army to battle, and to escape. When, however, the guerrilla is attacking, this advantage belongs to the enemy. Again, only for retreat and combat with external assailants is this knowledge useful. This aide may be removed, however, by counterguerrilla forces, even on the guerrillas’ home turf, by constant counterguerrilla operations in a given area by a permanently stationed counterguerrilla force, or with clever use of native assets.

c.
Motivation and Discipline. The leader of the guerrilla group is well trained, and devoted to their cause. They reinforce motivation through immediate discipline of their ranks. Usually, a guerrilla is devoted to their cause almost to the point of fanaticism.
d. Limited Responsibilities and Obligations. Obvious why, ain’t it? This leaves him totally free to devote himself to his cause.
e. TACTICS. Hoeyeah. The guerrilla has the ability to utilize a flippin’ huge amount of tactics against his enemy, from terror (me no like) and sabotage, to full-out warfare. This allows him to escalate, or deescalate, activity against his foes, almost at will.
f. Physical Condition.
(1) The guerrilla is usually in the stage of life where he’s in peak physical condition. One of the major advantages a guerrilla has is his ability to endure hardship. Usually, even in normal times, the situation a guerrilla is in forces him to make use of natural resources, and become fairly innovative. Even more so in a zombiefull world.
(2) The advantages described in this section are designed to help you to analyze the specific guerrilla threat. No two guerrilla groups are exactly the same, so these are just an aid, to be applied against the specific situation addressed. What ever you figure on, the obvious advantages have to be reduced or circumvented.

Section I – III – Mao’s principles

The principles of guerrilla tactics have been stated by a Chinaman, Mao Tse-Tung:

- Enemy advances, we retreat.
- Enemy halts, we harass.
- Enemy tires, we attack.
- Enemy retreats, we pursue.

Section II – Strategy

I could literally write a book on this subject.

This is STRATEGY, not tactics. Keep that in mind. This section will cover the guerrilla’s process of forming a strategy. Strategy is understood to be the analysis of the objectives to be completed in light of the total military situation, and the overall ways of accomplishing these objectives. Tactics are the practical methods of achieving the set strategic objectives. Definitions courtesy of Che Guevara. You can’t (shouldn’t be able to) use tactics properly, without first formulating a good strategy, or “Game Plan”. Hoho! Let us begin!

Section II – I – The Essence of Strategy

In order to have proper strategic findings, one must consider everything. In this example, I’m just saying you’re the guerrilla, to make this process simpler for all of us; I’m sick of writing if third-person, I prefer second for this format. Now, usually, if you were to attack a stronghold or base, their (your targets) goal would be to totally destroy your attacking force. This is the most logical thing, due to the fact that you’ll just keep coming – in their eyes – until one of the forces involved is dead. Yours or theirs. Purdy much all that they can do is count your numbers, and try to establish what kind of weapons you’re using.

Back to your side, I’ll say again, in order to have proper strategic findings, ONE MUST CONSIDER EVERYTHING. You need to analyze the enemy resources and conditions.

Such as:
  1. In quantity of men.
  2. In mobility.
  3. In popularity and morale.
  4. In armaments.
  5. In capacity of leadership.
  6. In provisions (food).
  7. In general wellbeing.

You must form your strategy based on these factors, and others that may become apparent based on your situation.

Ah, but there are still more aspects to survey. The armaments of the enemy (extension of number 4 in the above list), their ways of treating them, and their methods of using them have to be considered, because the main supply of weapons for the guerrilla is, and would be, the enemy’s armaments. Ironically, I’m listening to “Kirby’s Dreamland” at the moment. Don’t ask. Ahem. Right. Now back to strategy. As a result (not of Kirby, check before that), if there’s a mater of choice, you should try to use the same type of weapons as the enemy. This is because one of the main issues a guerrilla faces is lack of ammunition.

Once the objectives have been established and analyzed, it is necessary to study the order of steps leading to the achievement of the final objective. This should be planned in advance, although they will change and be adjusted as the combat unfolds, and unforeseen circumstances will develop as the fighting unfolds.

Section II – II – In The Beginning. . .

In the beginning of a guerrilla engagement, your goal is, quite simply, to avoid being destroyed. Little by little, it'll become easier for the members of the guerrilla band or bands to adapt themselves to their form of life, and to make flight and escape from the forces that are on the offensive an easy task, because it is performed daily. When this condition is reached, you, having taken up inaccessible positions out of reach of the enemy, or having assembled forces that deter the enemy from attacking, ought to proceed to the gradual weakening of the enemy.

This will start at the points closest to the (temporary!) guerrilla base and then move further into the enemy territory, attacking his communications, later attacking or harassing his bases of operations, and his central bases. Tormenting him on every side, to the full extent of your forces.

The blows should be continuous. The enemy soldier in a zone of operations ought not to be allowed to sleep; his outposts ought to be attacked and liquidated systematically. At every moment, the impression ought to be created that he is surrounded by a complete circle. In wooded and broken areas this effort should be maintained both day and night; in open zones that are easily penetrated by enemy patrols, at night only. In order to do all this, the absolute cooperation of the people and a perfect knowledge of the ground are necessary. These two necessities affect every minute of the life of the guerrilla fighter.

Now, I’m listening “Creepy Doll”, by Jonathan Coulton, the writer of “Re: Your Brains”, and “Still Alive”, the Credits Theme of “Portal”. Betcha didn’t know he wrote all that!

Section II – III – Strategic Sabotage

Even though this section is brief, don’t underestimate the usefulness of sabotage.

Imagine how it would feel for the enemy if they had their electricity cut off (no light, no heat, nothing technical, almost whatsoever) their water, their communications, all their industry that they may have, their economy, all shut down, and not being able to travel, or at least very limited travel. Although, in this context, that will be commonplace to begin with, once everything is established, these things will become more available. Once everybody gets used to such commodities, it would be AWFUL to loose them again. Later on in this page, I’ll cover sabotage, and that means a full section on it. Ever heard of the “Avenger’s Front Page”, or the so-called “CIA Book of Dirty-Tricks”? Well, I have, and I know them well. . .

Yay, another update to the apologies!

Well, after my laptop commited suicide, it was resurected (burnt-out capacitor, sending in surges of power, and causing my laptop to overheat. I thought so.), and now MY GOD DAMN XBOX'S CAPACITOR FUCKING DIED!!!!! THAT is a VERY upseting and expensive thing for me! AND, my laptop continues to overheat, so no more games on that for me, either. It's even slightly painful to touch right now. THIS MEANS I HAVE TO RESORT BACK TO GAMECUBE!!!!! Once you own an Xbox 360, you can't just start using a GameCube again! It doesn't work that way. Also, there are quite a few other things that I have to deal with, like designing that website for Rotary (Including graphics!), teaching a couple of classes (I'm NOT a teacher! This is a temporary thing that I have to do.), and crying myself to sleep while curled up in a pile of stuffed animals.

To people who think that these tactics should be used on zombies, why would you? Zombies can't feel fear, they can't worry, they don't use weapons, they don't plan, and they don't feel fear (yes, I repeated that). Just use normal tactics on zombies, it would be much easier.

I'M NOT DONE YET, FOLKS; FIGURE IT OUT FOR GOD'S SAKE!

Your friend and mine, Drewblet.

AND A NOTE TO ALL THOSE CONCERNED:

If you have a beef, write to your local congressman. No, actualy post it in the Suggestions thread. I actually do take suggestions seriously. It's true that not everything will be put into the article, but most suggestions will be taken into consideration. This is building on ~Jack~'s thread.

Good god, I ramble.

Byebye!

Still Alive, by Jonathan Coultan.

This was a triumph, I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS;
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Aperture science, we do what we must, because we can;
for the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead.

But, there's no sense crying over every mistake;
you just keep on trying till you run out of cake,
and the science gets done,
and you make a neat gun,
for the people who are still alive!

I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere, right now.
Even though you broke my heart, and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
and threw every piece into a fire.
and as they burned, it hurt because I was so happy for you.

Now these points of data make a beautiful line,
and we're out of beta, were releasing on time!
So' I'm glad I got burned;
think of all the things we learned,
for the people who are still alive!

Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay inside.
maybe you'll find someone else to help you.
Maybe Black Mesa.
That was a joke, ha ha, FAT CHANCE!
Anyway, this cake is great, it's so delicious and moist.

Look at me still talking, when there's science to do!
When I look out there, it makes me glad I'm not you!
'Cause there's experiments to run,
and there's research to be done
on the people who are still alive!

And, believe me, I am still alive.

I'm doing science, and I'm still alive.

I feel fantastic, and I'm still alive.

And, when you're dieing, I will be still alive.

And, when you're dead, I will be still alive.

Still alive.

Still alive.

God, I love that song.

OK, DONE!

Thanks for writing, it's a nice read.
But very large parts of it seem not to belong here. Zeds don't have supply lines to disrupt, vehicles and powerplants to sabotage, morale to break. Zeds can't be harrased, spied upon, harassed, disrupted or worn out.

Please Note that this is a thread for suggestions that are intended to contribute to the overall article. Not everything you say will make it onto the page, and odds are nothing ever will. However, if there is some brilliant idea that just pops out there, then... well, yeah.
