I based this design off of a Swiss halberd that cold steel made at one time. The weapon essentially combines a hook, axe, and spear into one weapon. In my design the inside of the hook and the point of the hook are both dull, in combat this facilitates parry's and traps, as well as using it to move/trip opponents. The blade is beveled at a 35-45 degree angle, the goal isn't to have a sharp blade, but to act as a bone breaker of sorts, the spear requires little maintenance and makes a circular wound that would be very difficult to suture closed. This design can be made quickly using the following materials and equipment
1 - 10"x 24" 3/8" thick steel plate, for this purpose 1024 "mild steel" would be more than adequate. 1 - 2" dia steel pipe 2 feet long 1 - hickory shaft 2 - 1/4 grade 5 bolts and matching nuts.
tools needed
Oxyfuel cutting torch. SMAW welder or GMAW welder with appropriate electrodes. Grinder, either bench or angle grinder, or double cut bastard files. drill press and 5/16" twist bit.
The construction process is very simple. Cut the desired shapes out of the steel plate for the hook and the bladed portion using the cutting torch. Put the appropriate bevel on the edge using the grinders/file. Use the cutting torch to cut a bevel from the pipe, sharpen it as well. Weld hook and blade to pipe, insert handle into dull end of pipe, drill two holes through the pipe into the handle, insert bolts and tighten with the nuts.
Additional modifications would be adding flats to both sides of the handle to provent the weapon from twisting, as well as adding a leather thong to help retain the weapon.
