CurrencyTrade and Currency

When Z-day arrives, the currency that we know of today will vanish. The worth of a dollar would no longer exist. During the first few hours of the outbreak, panic and confusion will cause many people to lose track of their cash. Only valuables will be kept: pictures, videos, jewelry and other items that have sentimental value.

After the chaos has settled, there will be few things that will be used for currency or trade. These items are not paper or coin money, but rather items that can be used or traded again. In the case of a zombie world, the barter system will most likely be used in some form. However, seeing as this is also a battle of the fittest, it may take some time for society to once again develop order. Certain pirates or looters may disregard the etiquette of the barter system, and merely steal as they see fit. In this instance, it is important to protect your belongings as well as yourself, and remain armed. When scavenging for supplies, it is important to keep in mind not only what you need, but also what you could use to trade with others. Below are examples of items that have varying importance to different groups.

Items to trade:
-Guns and Ammo: Weapons will be one of the most valuable items up for trade. A time will likely come where you find a certain weapon less useful than you had anticipated, or perhaps you simply wish to stock up on ammo. In any case, weapons should be traded carefully, as they are the only means of protection from zombies. Remember that these supplies are limited, unless someone manages to start up an ammunitions factory, which is unlikely. Having as much ammo as possible will help you immensely.

-Shelter: This one is tough, because allowing somebody a spot in your fortress is risky. In this case, you would need to make sure whatever they offered up (weapons, skills, etc.) would justify having an additional person to oversee. There are certain benefits, such as having an extra person to perform maintenance, act as a lookout, or help with preparing meals. Be warned, however, that this is also an additional person who could slip up and jeapordize the safety of your entire group.
-
-Food:Nothing is more important than staying alive, and the only way to do that is by eating healthily. Food is something that you will have to be willing to trade because it is essential for survival. Things to keep in mind are food allergies- if you pick up many gluten free items, they will be extremely valuable to someone with gluten allergies, allowing you to trade for more than you normally would get. Eating a balanced diet is also extremely important. If you've got a stockpile of beef jerky, trade some for a bit of canned fruit. Keeping your body strong is essential.
Medicine/First-Aid Items:People will have medical conditions regardless of if there are zombies or not. If you manage to get ahold of diabetes medication, treatment for high blood pressure, etc., you can get highly valued items in exchange. If you spot them, grab ahold of items such as diabetes supplies, narcotics such as morphine, birth control, high doses of ibuprofen, antibiotics, gauze, etc., because these items will be in high demand and not necessarily found easily.
-
-Services:Knowledge is the most powerful thing that you can have in a post-apocalyptic world. Skills that will earn you valuable items include medical training, mechanic experience, knowledge of engineering or construction, wilderness survival, etc. There will not be already established places to go and have repairs done, or a sick child taken care of. If you can do these things, you can negotiate to be paid in valuable supplies such as food or ammo.

-Sex:
This is an item that some may feel as though they can offer up in exchange for goods and supplies, but it is highly discouraged. Not only would a person need to worry about getting an STD, there are certainly pregnancy concerns for women. In the end, it's an individual's decision, but it is essential to have some dignity and self-respect. If you do decide that you need something badly enough to justify being used as an object, at least protect yourself and use a condom and other protective measures. Sex is certainly a primal urge for many people, but we need to prioritize in life or death situations.

here's a question to consider.
Knowing that re-population may be necessary after the zombie hordes have all died or been killed off, couldn't women become a sort of "last resort" or "desperation" currency? i mean.. no group that has ANY women in it will want the women harmed or worse because then thats one less woman who could help repopulate. isn't it feasible that to a certain degree, women would become the most precious thing on the planet whether because of sex or the need to repopulate?

I think if someone were able to provide medical or any kind of vaccine against the zombie disease. It would be one of the most valuable things that could be. But probably the most dangerous to have.

If you have a solid fixed location, ie a fort, gold, silver, diamonds etc may provide some means of exchange. Otherwise, lugging around bars of gold is pointless. Already, ammo is becoming a medium of exchange. About a year ago, during the ammo shortage in the usa, I suplimented my income nicely just from friends bugging me for ammo. Learn to handload. The coolest gun is the world, is little more than a paperweight without ammo. With ammo costs already soaring, if you want to shoot, you need to learn to load. Food will always be worth money, but then again, if you have a large food source, you will need a small army to protect it. Medical skills, mechanical skills, and suprisingly musicians will always be in demand. As to the worlds oldest profession, I'm sure it will find its place in things as well. Several apocalypse stories also mention the ugly practice of human slave trade, even in the show Jericho, a slave holding area was shown. Personally, I would have real issue with anyone that would enslave another in such times, and profit from their misery. Slavers, and cannibals, should be some of the first staked out as a warning to others of that ilk. No doubt, barter would be the standard of trade, even after a monetary system returned. Things to consider: Ammo, batteries, motor oil, medical supplies with morphine and antibiotics at the top of the list. While fuel would be valuable, it is hard to store quanities safely. I have begun to collect various knives when they go onsale at the sporting goods stores. Flashlights are another cheap, easy to store item. A well stocked tool box is another good idea. Once in Hawaii there was a major shortage of toilet paper, it hit $5 a roll for a time. Look around your house, make a list of everyday things you use. buy a couple extra next time at the store. Good luck
