Deacon01's Survival Plan.This is a featured page

Profile Name: Deacon01
Your Name: You can call me "Help". Of course, thats if i'm willing to talk with you.
Your location: Scotland. Glasgow.

Tell us:

Is your plan dependent on zombies in your home town, or anywhere?

My plan is primarily prepared for a zombie outbreak within the confines of Glasgow. In the event that I am on holiday abroad I will stay clear of all emergency service centres and keep off all main roads unless no other alternative is available, a humble mountain bike or the car I rented for the trip will remain with me until it can either go no further, is stolen or runs out of fuel.
The goal is not to get back home, but to stay alive for as long as humanly possible while in unfamiliar terrain.

Will you be staying in your home or headed somewhere else?

In my area I have a few excellent options at my disposal. None of them require me being at home.
I don't live in fort knox. Any blundering idiot with half a brain could get inside this home if they really, wanted to. They would just have to be persistant...

What can I do? Board up my windows by removing interior doors and taking tables apart? Nails and duct tape only hold for so long. You'd just have to look at my previous DIY jobs of trying to build IKEA furniture and having it fall apart or come loose in a month or so. Just imagine someone constantly pawing and pulling at that shoddy construction job and you make sure your jury rigged handycrafts don't last a week.
My home has two exits. Front and back. The backyard does have the advantage of being fenced, but only by timber, and could easily be toppled if enough force or weight were pressed upon it. It wouldn't last long, but it would buy enough time for an escape should the front yard leading to the open streets be compromised.

There is no upstairs area. And the majority of windows are not raised above the ground, and can easily be approached and touched without having to strain to reach them. My door is a security door, with a double lock, (I do live in a crime ridden area.) But the Door does carry a large window pane upon the front. Easily broken by someone who has no regard for the law. I.E. any zed that knows i'm tucked away inside.

There is but only one alternative. Leave if I want to be safe.

If you're heading out, how do you plan to get there?

I do own a mountain bike. But I have rarely used the thing. And it does not aid me in helping those around me seek shelter should the outbreak reach citywide or even global proportions. Our family does own a car, and this is a densely packed residential area in which we have lived all our lives, and we know these streets like the back of our hands.
Trouble is. So do our neighbours and everyone else that lives in this city.
Main roads and side roads are likely to be packed, filled with frustrated drivers and passengers which will likely cause an accident or two on the roads. Causing further blockages. While a car would be great at shuffling our bodies and supplies from point A to point B, we might as well become a tin of sardines to a hungry cat. Just a matter of time before that tin is opened and its contents devoured.
The alternative option? Walk.

Yes Walk. Like I said. We know our way around this city because we have lived here for as long as we remember. We grew up in these streets. Played tag and soldiers in every garden and side street, and ideally the best way to get by is to take the route less travelled. Cut through the back yards.
Yes there will be zombies. But you can count their numbers on one hand compared to the masses in the streets, attracted to paniced people fleeing the scenes overtly without pause or second thought to the attention their creating for themselves.

By making our way through the back streets and cutting through or childhood shortcuts, we minimise the resistance encountered, have plenty of foliage to conceal our movements, and are less likely to run into anyone that could be a potential threat or burden to our effots.

And to our destination? We have several choices.

Two schools. A primary school and a high school are both 15minutes walk from here. Treble that number since we are moving slowly and quietly but still managable to get their quickly.
Since several years ago, when a gun crime incident occured within school grounds up North, resulting in a number of unfortunate deaths, security was tightened on all schools in our area and all areas surrounding.
Renovations have somewhat turned these schools into something more akin to Prisons. With large stone and cast iron walls and gates that you'd need a battering ram to overcome.
Within the school grounds we have a cafeteria, which is stocked to the gills with enough food to feed 100 students or more. And plenty of freezer, storage and cooking supplies to keep a small group of us well fed for months.
Computers with internet connections are also available should the power still be active for however long it lasts. CCTV camera's watch each gate, and monitor the school grounds which can be viewed from the janitors office.
There are two gymnasiums for keeping fit and encouraging games to avert boredom. A large library and study filled with fictional or educational books for reading and learning. Nurses office filled with basic equipment and tools for taking care of burns, gashes, killing pain and sterilising wounds. Televisions, telephones, radios, cd players, auditoriums. The list goes on...
With so much at our fingertips here, we would not need to bring much in the way of supplies, allowing us to cover the distance via walking with great ease.

Alternatively, there are a number of High Rise housing apartments, all kept in order with security doors and a large stairway. (Access past these security doors is easy if you can apply an electric shock to the electronic lock. And it doesn't even need to be a taser blast either... Just one of those sparkers for lighting gas cookers will do.) Stariways are narrow and easily blockable with enough junk looted from empty homes in lower floors.
With all the creature comforts of any other home, plus twenty others we can live comfortably in any of these buldings and have a bird's eye view of the surrounding streets from any window. With the addition of roof access, messages and signals can be left or sent to passing aircraft. Or buckets and basins can be laid out to collect much needed rainwater.

Got anyone you want to take with you?

Ideally, my mother, father and brother. No one else. As it would only complicate matters. Though anyone can follow so long as they keep their mouth shut and don't fall behind. And probably my cat.
You'd be surprised how much a humble pet can take your mind off your troubles.

How will you communicate with the outside world, or do you plan to go the hermit route?

I own an airband reciever. Which is all well and good for listening, just not responding. I do not plan on joining up with anyone unless they can provide an immeadiate advantage to my situation. So pleas of Help Us and the like are more than likely ignored. Soldiers searching for survivors are another matter. Though I obviously plan on listening carefully to ascertain notions of malcontent that may prove to be a scam or trap for anyone stupid enough to respond.

Internet communication will hopefully be available for a time until the power goes out. Still the best communications tool.

Messages left on the roof's letting airbourne travellers know that there are living people inside would be worthwhile. Air transport can be a godsend if properly looked after.

Messages will not be left on the ground. For the simple reason of dettering any leeches or vultures that might want to use or take our supplies.

How are you planning to get food and water?

School supplies should last for a few months. Longer depending on how we ration it out.
In the event of that running out. Myself and my brother, providing either of us are still alive at this point. Will venture out and investigate surrounding homes for leftover goods, pasta, cans of fruit/veg/meat, dried fruits and of course, batteries. Gotta have batteries, and everyone at least has one tv remote control in their home just waiting to be looted.
As for water. There is a canal that runs through our local town, its not the cleanest source of water, but it can be purified. Take a Britta filter jug from a home depo store and use that. Or better yet, just use Potassium Permanganate from the school science lab. Not only does it purify water, but it can also be used as an explosive... Along with 90% of the chemicals found there if used properly.

What's your weapon of choice? Do you need to reload that thing? Gotta plan for that?

Old Bluey. My crowbar.
Hell i'll need it for breaking and entering into the school, not to mention nearby homes when our supplies start to run thin. The dense iron is also more than capable of smashing a skull open in two solid strikes, or shattering a kneecap in one strike. But it's use as a tool is paramount to any use as a weapon.

Secondly I will bring my personal Hunting knife. Another all purpose tool instead of a weapon.

Scotland does not have many firearms at it's disposal. Plenty of knife crime and folks getting glassed**, but very few firearm incidents. That leaves us with melee as our primary option. Personally, i'd rather flee than risk infection. Evasion is the key, not combat. Only engage if you absolutely, positively have to, otherwise, just move faster than the zeds approaching you.

Got a survival philosophy?

I dont have to run faster than the zombies. Just faster than you...

Are you willing to hook up with other survivors?

Not unless they have something of worth to offer. Otherwise if i have no personal connection to you, you are dead weight and a detriment to my personal well being.

Is your plan based on a book/movie/blog/scientist we may have heard of?

None that I have ever read.

**This means someone being attacked by a broken bottle or shived with a Pint glass in the face.

You may want to test that 2 shots to the head theory. Its probably correct but you may want to test that. i don't mean try it out on your brother i was thinking try a coconut. Yes, a coconut. They are nearly exactly the same hardness as a human skull so maybe you should try it out?
