Introduction
Hey Guys I've been looking through this site and I've seen loads of terrible survival plans, I'd love to name some but there are so many bad ones. So anyway I've pieced together a load of bits and pieces to make an awesome survival guide, which for once on this site is actually well thought out and realistic. I think we should start out on the equipment as it seems like the thing which everyone on this site seems to fail at planning. Please let me know what you think about my plan as well.

The Essentials
Sure you could probably drop a couple if your thinking of packing light, but it would be quite beneficial to have this lot of stuff.

Hunting Knife
Usefulness: 4/5
Reliability: 4/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 2/5
Importance: 4/5
A high quality Hunting Knife may be one of the most expensive pieces of equipment you will need but it has many uses and is a crucial part of your survival kit. The knife would likely be carried on the user at all times rather than in a backpack so it would take up the absolute minimum amount of space, although it is advised to keep a sharpening kit handy. Remember to keep your knife well maintained by regularly sharpening it, keeping it sheathed when not in use and disinfecting it before you use it for different tasks. Also remember that this knife should not be used as weapon.

Flashlight
Usefulness: 3/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 3/5
Flashlights can cost anything from £1 to £120, you don't particularly need a super expensive flashlight but it would be good to get a fairly decent one. Even if you do choose an expensive one, the design is generally the same, press the button and go; the main difference is the power supply. Most flashlights are powered by batteries, this obviously takes up valuable space in your bag (Although it would be advised to take batteries anyway), a better alternative would be a flashlight powered by a dynamo.

Lighter/Matches/Tea Light
Usefulness: 4/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 2/5
Importance: 3/5
Any type of lighter will do, obviously a higher quality one would be advised. Simply said, lighters make starting fires so much easier, which is extremely useful whilst trying to survive. Pack a couple of lighters and some matches just in case. Making fire can also be an alternative to a flashlight.

Binoculars
Usefulness: 3/5
Reliability: 4/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 2/5
Definitely not an essential, but still. It’s helpful to know when invaders are coming before they arrive; this allows time for you to prepare a plan. I'm not a binocular expert but I assume they are easy to maintain, and to be quite honest they really don't take up a lot of space.

Compass/Watch
Usefulness: 2/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 2/5
Another bit that you probably won’t need but it would be helpful to have. Knowing where you’re going is obviously fairly important for when you are travelling. The watch feature also helps towards planning time-based activities, this helps greatly with morale.

Tarp/Tent Pegs/Sleeping Bag or Hammock
Usefulness: 4/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 2/5
Difficulty of Use: 3/5
Importance: 3/5
Using this you can make yourself a lightweight shelter almost anywhere. Although it’s the largest part of your kit it is definitely worth considering. A hammock is also a lightweight alternative for a place to sleep, although they keep you safe from zombies (If placed high enough), they do not protect you from wind or rain.

Rope/Twine
Usefulness: 3/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 2/5
Importance: 2/5
Rope is helpful for a lot of things, it can be used with other materials to make shelter, traps or even possible escape routes. Twine is an alternative but I would advise you to carry both.

Duct Tape/Glue/Sewing Kit/Sharpening Kit/WD40
Usefulness: 3/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 2/5
All very usefull for maintaining other gear stuff, simply said.

First Aid Kit
Usefulness: 4/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 3/5
Importance: 4/5
If you’re injured you’re going to need some first aid, the size of your fist aid kit depends on how light you want to travel, I would advise you to take only essentials. The most important things for your first aid kit are probably Bandages, Painkillers and Disinfectant but you may want to carry other stuff such as soap and burn cream.

Water canteen
Usefulness: 5/5
Reliability: 5/5
Ease of Maintenance: 5/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 5/5
An absolute must have, tied with food as the most important item!

Non-perishable Food
Usefulness: 5/5
Reliability: 5/5
Ease of Maintenance: 5/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 5/5
I don't really need to explain how important food is, do I? Maybe I do need to note that it should be non-perishable, meaning that it will not go out of date for a long time. Good food includes canned and dried foods as they all have huge sell by dates.

Water Purifying Tablets or Water Purifier
Usefulness: 4/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 3/5
Difficulty of Use: 3/5
Importance: 3/5
Its arguable as to which one is better, sure the tablets are lighter but the purifier will last you a hell of a lot longer. Personally I would travel light and take the tablets but only for emergency use, for regular times I would likely just boil the water.

Vitamin Tablets
Usefulness: 3/5
Reliability: 4/5
Ease of Maintenance: 5/5
Difficulty of Use: 2/5
Importance: 2/5
Not really needed, but in those times where you want to preserve your food it would be helpful if you were fit and healthy enough to survive for an extended period of time.

Flannel/Soap/Oral health Products
Usefulness: 4/5
Reliability: 4/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 2/5
Importance: 3/5
It’s nice to be hygienic.

Cutlery/Cup
Usefulness: 3/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 2/5
Importance: 2/5
Oh come on! We dont need to strip down to primal instinct just ebcasue everyone else has, we are still human after all! Cups are also usefull for boiling things in.

Batteries
Usefulness: 4/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 2/5
Importance: 3/5
Only really needed to power electronics, (which you shouldn't carry too many of) it would be good to carry them though as they do not take up much space and are fairly useful.

Bag
Usefulness: 5/5
Reliability: 4/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 5/5
Even if you’re not carrying a lot of equipment, it is a lot easier to carry it in a bag rather than in your pockets or hands.

Fishing Kit
Usefulness: 3/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 3/5
Difficulty of Use: 4/5
Importance: 3/5
Obviously this is only going to be useful to someone who has knowledge in fishing, not a lot of knowledge considering the ease of some kits, but you know.

Apparel
Armour is something you won't want to overlook, choose the right gear or get infected and die!

Clothes
Usefulness: 5/5
Reliability: 4/5
Ease of Maintenance: 3/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 4/5
Simple enough, most of us are wearing them at the moment. It would be helpful to pack clothes that defend against zombie bites, such as leather and denim. It may also be good to pack clothes for different environments (Wet, Cold). It si adviseable to carry most types fo clothign to offer maximum protection against bites and the environment, for example: carry a pair of gloevs and a hat, at least your head and hands are slightly protected.

Sports Gear
Usefulness: 4/5
Reliability: 4/5
Ease of Maintenance: 3/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 3/5
Great protection depending on what type fo stuff you get, hockey gear is probably your best bet.

Motorbike Gear
Usefulness: 5/5
Reliability: 4/5
Ease of Maintenance: 3/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 2/5
Pretty heavy duty stuff, will protect you form zombies and crazy stunt jumps.

Riot Gear
Usefulness: 5/5
Reliability: 5/5
Ease of Maintenance: 3/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 2/5
Hats off to you if you can get hold of this! Perfect protection from zombies and small arms.

Military Grade Armour
Usefulness: 5/5
Reliability: 5/5
Ease of Maintenance: 2/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 1/5
Keep dreaming.

Goggles/Gloves/Masks
Usefulness: 3/5
Reliability: 3/5
Ease of Maintenance: 4/5
Difficulty of Use: 1/5
Importance: 2/5
Not really essential, but it is good to defend your whole body.

Weapons
This site's weapon sets need clearing up, simple.

Firearms
The one thing that frustrates me the most on this site is the kids going on about the military class armouries they happen to have lying about their houses, unfortunately I don't have access to a super modified custom AK-47 with every attachment from Call of Duty 4 on it in my house or in the surrounding area, and I do not have the skill to use one anyway. Anyway, Obviously if you have a firearm (Whether you can use it or not), it would be advised to take it with you, as they are powerful tools when wielded properly, although it is good to know that a gun is not going to save you in every situation. If you can wield and acquire a firearm then well done, but remember to conserve ammo and use it how it was made to be used, for example, don't go trying to tear through a bunch of zombies with a pump-action like you do on Left 4 Dead because trust me, it wont work. It’s also helpful to note how bulky guns and ammo are, they will be taking up a large amount of space your survival kit when in use an when not. Just a little idea, nail guns are an awesome firearm type weapon, think about it, they are light, easy to use, powerful enough to kill and you will almost never run out of ammo. Anyway, heres a general overview of firearm types, this is theory by the way, I have close to no experience with firearms myself.

Pistols
A pistol is your best friend against zombies, despite being shown in movies to have pathetic stopping power, they actually are'nt that bad. Your standard 9mm pistol could easily kill a human if hit anywhere vital, the same goes for zombies as generally they are just glorified humans that have no (or lessened) emotion. Pistol's come in many types but most use the same sorts of ammuniton, most pistol rounds will be very easy to aqquire anywhere.

Shotguns
Every zombie killers favourite. Shotguns reduce range and accuracy in exchange for huge stopping power and an awesome spread. Shotguns generally come in two types: Pump action and semi automatic (Allthough full-auto's are available). I'm not really a firearm's guy so I cant really explain what they're like, but from what I know shotguns are deisgned for close quarter combat and breaching. Shotguns and ammunition are relatively easy to aqquire.

SMG's
These babys are for spray and pray tactics. SMG's swap out stopping power for high rate of fire and decreased weight, this allows for more CQC and breaching options. Unfortunately SMG's can be rather difficult to aqquire although the ammuniton is rather common.

Rifles
Every soldiers best friend, rifles are very varied in what they do but generally they are deisgned for mid range combat and provide the user with increased accuracy and rate of fire whilst still retaining stopping power. Rifle is not a very good way to describe these sections as there are many different types, the main few I can name though are: Assault, Battle, Hunting and Sniper. Assault rifles are known for their high rate of fire whilst still having the option of more powerfull catridges to eliminate enemies, unfotunately assault rifles are difficult to legally obtain in certain countrys. Battle rifles are basically assault rifles which sue the powerfull 7.62mm catridge, this allows for logner range kills and increased stopping power. Hunting rifles are one of the easier weapon types to obtain, they are usually semi automatic or bolt action and are used for recreational acitivites, they generally use common catridges. Sniper rifles are rifles that are modified for long range use, sniper rifles are usually paired with a scope to improve accuracy whilst in long range use.

Machine Guns
Lets face it, you wont get one of these, but hey, tis worth ta;lkign about them briefly. Machine guns are great, they have huge stopping power, rate of fire and catridge size in exchange for accuracy. Machine guns come in many sizes ranging from small infantry LMG's to large mounted weapons such as the Browning .50.

Launchers
Lets face it, you really, really wont get one of these! These babys launch pyrotechnics at your enemies, obviously great if you can carry one for a start, and if you have the skill and tactics to reload properly, but its all made up for by the explosively good stopping power!

Melee weapons
Good for close and personal combat but terrible for almost everything else, you either love melee or loathe it. Virtually anything can be used as a melee weapon, a bat, a chair even a pair of scissors but melee weapons are generally divided into two types: Bladed and Blunt. A blunt weapon is simple to use an easy to acquire, they do have a tendency to break though, a decent blunt weapon needs to be able to get a a lot of power and momentum built up in a short amount of time in order to batter zombie brains, weapons like baseball bats are good but a large amount of energy is sent down the handle when an enemy is struck which can lead to injuries. Bladed weapons are a whole different story, a bladed weapon is used to cut or stab zombies, there are many debates over the use of bladed weapons against zombies but personally I believe them to be less than useful. The main things about bladed weapons I would like to stab at (Pun not-intended) would be the films that depict chainsaws and katana's as being brilliant weapons, this however is not the case. A chainsaw is an awesome zombie killing tool but it has so many downfalls, for a start the blades would be easily clogged with blood and gore which would easily disable it, chainsaws also use vast amount of valuable fuel, are extremely heavy and difficult to operate and they make stupendous amounts of noise. Katana's on the other hand are the complete opposite, they are light, silent and overall very good for killing zombies, but their biggest downfalls are the difficulty of use and the difficulty of acquisition, a genuine katana is very difficult to come across these days, many hundreds of fakes are made and sold all around the globe and the chancing of you obtaining a real one are close to none. Fake katana’s have a habit of breaking if they are used for anything more than hanging on a wall and real or fake they are extremely difficult to use effectively. I've listed soem examples of melee weapons, good and bad, for you to look through, most of them are jsut random thigns I can see in this room which could be used to beat a zombie.

Baseball Bat, Cricket bat, Pool Cue, Hockey Stick, Plank, Katana, Sword, Cleaver, Kitchen knife, Broom handle, Machete, sledgehammer, Fireaxe, pickaxe, Screwdriver, Shovel, Chainsaw, Guitar, Rock, Bench, Furniture, Scissors, Stationary, Cutlery, Toys, TV, Radio, Computer, printer, Scanner, Photocopier, Skateboard, Lead Pipe, Crowbar, Hammer, Bike, Chair, Person, dismembered limb, coursework, Food, Blowtorch, toilet seat, hole punch, water cooler, toaster, fridge door...

Oh for christs sake you get the idea!

Homemade Pyrotechnics
Mmm, If you can make these then go ahead, they will help you greatly, but then again if you don’t know how to use them safely and efficiently then they aren’t really worth it, you don’t want to go getting blown up by your own pipe bomb now do you? Also note that fire based weapons may be less useful against zombies, this is because a human who is burnt to death generally dies of shock logn before their organs cook, this means the zombie will likely have time to fight for longer until he is totally cooked, this actually makes zombies more dangerous than they already are!

Real Pyrotechnics
Ooh the sweet smell of burning zombie flesh!

Setting Up
Obviously your going to find a place to live and set up defenses, heres my views on how to make your base camp.

The Plan
Now that we've sorted out the gear it's time to fix up a plan...

My Personal Gear and Plan
Simple enough, I would carry all the equipment listed under essentials along with a shovel as my primary defense, If available (Which they are'nt) I would be happy with any firearm and appropriate ammuniton. I'd probably wear a couple of layers of my normal clothes, its crude but I dont really have another alternative!
