Excellent defensible location for any post-apocalypse, including zombies.
ENTRY TO BUILDING Upper levels of building are reached by two, narrow two-story escalators. Escalators are overlooked by several shafts and windows from the upper levels, which would make excellent spots for safe shooting or for deployment of re-usable weaponry, such as large, heavy objects hung from ropes. Zombies would have to ascend single-file, making them easier to pick off. Essentially, you have a medieval castle-style defensible stair, here. For best results, you'd need to seal off access to the building's emergency stairs and either seal off or possibly blow up the connecting bridge to the parking garage. PROTECTED SPACE Ample enough to support a reasonably large population. Includes kitchen facilities. Would have enough food and booze on hand in restaurant and bar areas to get you through initial zombie issues. SAFE ACCESS TO OUTDOORS Guthrie features large, cantilevered "bridge to nowhere", which is only accessible from protected levels. Food could be grown on the terraced benches. Water could be collected here as well. Great feature if you're worried about survivors going crazy from being locked up indoors. EASY-ACCESS LOOTING Located in downtown Minneapolis, the Guthrie is near multiple restaurants and stores that can be raided by looting teams after things die down a bit. Central location in metro area also ensures that most zombie fodder (and, thus, zombies) will flow away from it during initial infection. IDEAL LOCATION FOR SOCIETAL REVIVAL As zombie infection dies down, Guthrie provides ideal location from which to control traffic and trade along upper Mississippi River. |

Just thought of a possible fortification, sounds like a good idea but I would like some other points of view.
The location is a decommissioned destroyer located in Galveston, Texas. It survived Ike and Rita, taking no damage. It is berthed on it's own little island that is shielded by Galveston from the ocean. Location is complete with a pier and large visitor center. Here is a link for anyone that wants to check it out: http://www.hnsa.org/ships/stewart.htm I am sure that all the weaponry is also non-operational so that's not an issue. The ship and the submarine are also open to the public, and are rarely locked down.

A basement without any windows or opening other than the door, inwhich you could hold off. Sure it may not be a good idea if the world is gonna stay full of zombies but its good to go to if your waiting to be rescued. Also ive always had the idea in my head of a tree house go to the bad palces page and read my thread about it.
hope you found this valueble!

he P-CEP campus is large, already has basic school grounds fences, and consists of 4 (3 high schools and 1 gym building) easy to defend buildings.
the place is stocked well enough to feed 2000 teenagers each for a week, there is a small but old forest near plymouth full of large and long trees which can be used for building purposes, and has two floors on each building but the gym. Plymouth is hard to get around in if you can't read, and is well segmented with thick metal fire doors that can be locked in place. it's only weakness is the glass to the stairs that are at the ends of the 3 large halls, but the doors to them are strong and there are internal ways to get to the second floor. all other glass doors are made to take bullet shots and shatter proof. and there are lots of tables and desks and chairs to made barricades with. it also has a backup generator made to keep power on for 24 hours, and is rechargeable using solar panels on the roof. Canton is somewhat old, but it has minimal window area reachable from the ground, and it has a metal shop designed to repair cars. the kids with that class often learn by fixing their own car. it has a feeding cap just as high as Plymouth, but this building is gas powered instead of an electrical based kitchen. Salem has no windows on the on the bottom floor anywhere but the cafeteria, and is extremly confusing if you don't know your way around, meaning that zombies if they break in will likely walk around in circles thinking they are getting somewhere. same food supplies as the other two. the gym has showers and other PE related things. nuff said. but the real seller on this place is that fact that there are old, unused sewer tunnels that are big enough to but a golf cart in that travel to each of the school's basements. and are not connected with the main sewer system of the city grid. they were, but they got scraped. but they were left there.

remember that sometimes the best defense is to get the fuck out of there. Make sure theres a garage for a vehicle or an emergency exit that leads to quite a ways away from whatever base your defending. once you have a designated escape route, get some people to defend it whether theres no zombies around for miles or thousands on the other side of the base. You can't just run towards you escape route and find out that theres a small horde there because you didn't send someone to backup the backup plan.

The Moon is a great place to go. If you can get a rocket or are on a space station on Z-Day, ou are safe. Zombies can't fly, and probably would die in outer space. If you have about 3 years worth of supplies, try to head for a space station and take off. Don't forget your spacesuit.

My plan is to stock up, then wait out the initial panic. I will then raid the armory that is just a few blocks from my house, and gather supplies then head to the military base close by. I am in a pretty good place, because I live in the middle of the praries in Canada, and it freezes in the winter. Because of my location, I can stand quite adverse weather conditions from -70 degrees to +120 degrees, from sandstorms to snowstorms, and tornadoes to blizzards. Everybody around here hunts, and very large deer are everywhere, like in my front yard, eating my tree. Getting weapons will be easy, as I live literally, 2 blocks from a military armory with humvees, tanks, helicopters, etc. I also live just a half hour away from BATUS (Brittish Army Training Unit Suffield) which is one of the worlds largest military bases that soldiers come from all around the world to train at. It does bomb testing and development, chemical weapons testing and research (which we all know means development), and weapons testing and development, so it is almost 100% assured that they will have every weapon I could possibly imagine and many that I couldn't, with Gigamafrozillions of rounds of ammo. They will have bomb shelters, fuel reserves, food reserves, and will be staffed by some of the most knowledgable people in the army. They will also be the last people in the world to lose contact with others. Contrary, to popular belief, we Canadians are not all maple syrup sucking, beaver coddling frenchies, who have never held a gun. Many of us are hardened, weathered hunters, with the occasional bushpilot or general adventurist thrown into the mix. So, it is becaus of those reasons that I believe that my chosen site for survival will be one of the best places in the world to take refuge.

| edwardsja | Dekalb County Alabama | 0 | Mar 1 2008, 8:15 PM EST by edwardsja | ||||

All of the land west of the county is only accessable by two bridges that cross the Tennessee River. Land to the south of the county is mainly open, ranging from mountains to farmland. The entire area of Dekalb is mostly the last chain of the Appilacians. Most of the land is on the uphill. All roads leading into the county could be roadblocked or barricaded. If the two bridges west are destroyed along with the other minor bridges, this area of Alabama would be inaccessable to any zombies, and the nearest land cross in the north would be Tennessee. If prepared in advance, the entire county could be a fortress within weeks with help of the National Guard and volunteers. The land to the east comprises of Georgia state line, and a valley. Any hardcore survivors should look into Dekalb as becoming a natural stragic point for survial.
On a location that would be to fall back to, I would suggest the Jackson County area, which is in the valley, and also the Tennessee River itself if you have a boat.
