I don't see much difference in medieval siege warfare and digging in for zombies.
the issues are much the same except that zombie don't have the ability to build siege engines. so you can build with only the plan to defend against human zombie strength. having to not worry about catapults or battering rams makes things much simpler. the biggest issues are the same as for any fort from the dawn of time. fresh water. food storage. sanitation. man power to defend the walls. since zombies cannot build and climb ladders or use grappling hooks then you need a lot less manpower to watch the walls. in reality a well built fort could hold out until the zombies were standing on their brethren to clear the walls.. quite a while if anyone is around to start a fire to burn the bodies or can use a grappling hook to clear the dead. anyone have floor plans for a simple walled fort/keep/castle? Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it |

Everyone knows at one point in time you will need to defend your complex/bug-in location.Whether it be a mobile camp, secure fortress or underground tunnel network, you need to defend if from the two main threats, zees and raiders. Here are some basic tips & hints:
Machine Gun Posts: These can be made from sandbags, tent covers and camouflage nets.Ideally you may want to secure some heavy weaponry, from an abbandoned army depot or gun store. You can then construct it by setting up the base, maybe tapoulen. Then making a short wall of sandbags around, leaving a rear enterance gap. This should be no higher than 1m.Then put your machine gun up,and cover with a tent cover. This would be highly effective as a ground-based anti-raider chokepoint defensive structure, but not effective against zees. Watchtowers: If your complex has walls, then these are almost necessary in their own right. They should be easy to construct, even using things like logs and planks in their construction, and should be of medium height(a rural telephone pole). They are excellent against zees,as you can retract the ladder, and constantly lay down fire without the worry of being bitten. |

One of the most important thing a you must take into consideration when you are building your fort is the ever prevalent moan that will be with you day and night when under siege. earplugs should be worn as often as possible and you should soundproof your main communal areas, so as to keep your group members form going postal on you and not the zombies. to keep the members inside from being unaware of the outside situation (breaches, infected group members, etc.) an intercom system should be devised. once you are very far along in the building of your fort (you have established contact with a nearby fort, for example and are trading with them) you could devise a means of tryign to cancel out the moan, or at least keeping other zombies from hearing it, perhaps with te same tech used in bose noise cancellation headphones( a computer analyzes the exterior sounds, and the built in speakers generate a counterwave, look it up in any high school physics textbook.
