SVD DragunovModel: Weapon name
The Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova is easily one of the most recognizable sniper rifles in the modern world. It has been in constant production since 1963 and can be seen all around the world. While Izhmash produces the true Dragunov, copies have been made in multiple countries.

Despite appearing very similar to a Kalashnikov rifle, the actual operating system is somewhat different and parts are not interchangeable. The SVDS is a compact rifle with a folding metal stock and several modifications for reliability and stronger parts. The SVDSN is an SVDS capable of mounting night vision scopes. The SVU is a compact bullpup variant, with the SVU-A allowing for full auto fire and and 20 round magazines. The SWD-M is a Polish variant with a bipod and heavy barrel. The Tigr is a hunting rifle variant designed for commercial export and available in several different calibers. Norinco of China produces the Type 79 and Type 85 copies, while Iraq produces the Al-Kadesih copy with minor differences. Even RPK machine guns have been modified into Dragunov-style rifles and sold falsely as SVDs.

One rifle to note is the Romanian PSL sniper rifle. Despite appearing extremely similar, no parts or magazines are interchangeable and they can easily be mistaken for each other.

Where to find

Dragunovs are fairly popular sniper rifles around the world, though the sheer number of variants and copies makes it very difficult to find a true SVD. Prices can be as high as $1500 and as low as $900.

Complexity

Much like the AK that it closely resembles, the Dragunov is an extremely rugged rifle. The use of backup iron sights allows it to be used as an improvised battle rifle, though the scope should be taken care of. It's best to use it with match grade ammunition for best results, though in practice the rifle can get inconsistent hits at very long ranges.
