Energy Sources after Z-Day

After the initial outbreak power failures may be frequent. Later on into the outbreak this will only get worse. Soon the power plants will close down or be destroyed by zombies.

Lets start with some basics.

  • There are seven types of energy;

  1. Light Energy
  2. Kinetic Energy
  3. Potential Energy - Gravitational and Elastic
  4. Sound Energy
  5. Electrical Energy
  6. Chemical Energy
  7. And Heat (or Thermal) Energy

  • I am now moving onto the various Energy Sources

    1. Fossil Fuels, i.e. coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
    2. Fission
    3. Hydroelectric
    4. Biomass
    5. Solar
    6. Wind
    7. Geothermal
    8. Fusion (Do NOT confuse with Fission)

    Analogy of each:
    1. Fossil Fuels
Energy produced: Moderate thermal if burnt
    Supplies pre-outbreak: Large
Supplies in a present outbreak: Rapidly depleting
    Supplies post outbreak: Extremely few
    Uses: Cooking, Warmth

    Explanation
Shortly after the outbreak of Z-Day Fossil fuels will be in great supply; in particular petrol and coal however they will quickly be depleted by looters and civilians in an effort to stock up for future. The only exception are the likes of Wood and Peat Bog. (The later if you live in Ireland and Western U.K.) They are in excessive supply and have absolutely no risk of running out after Z-Day. All you need to get more is an axe to chop down trees or a shovel to dig up the Peat.

    2. Fission

    Energy produced: Electric
Supplies pre-outbreak: Restricted (energy-grade uranium is also weapons-grade uranium)
Supplies in a present outbreak: Unrestricted (Power plant personnel and security will either be killed or escape, leaving facilities unguarded
Supplies post outbreak: Plenty (radioactive isotopes will be released in a plant meltdown caused by the outbreak, or weapons will be used by dominating states/terrorist factions)
    Uses: Powering, weapons

    Explanation
Even before Z-day, the usage of nuclear fuels is controversial. In the event of a virus sweeping through the earth, the nuclear states, mainly the United States and Russia, will not be reluctant to use their bombs to destroy viral hot spots. North Korea, China, Pakistan, India and Iran will also be using their weapons to create 'radioactive walls' to keep away refugees. In other words, the use of nuclear supplies will still be plenty, since most stockpiles of nuclear fuels/weapons will be left unguarded, due to lack of manpower/energy to guard them. In other words, a bomb shelter now will also make a good zombie shelter, since the mushroom clouds resulting will be fascinating and absolutely lethal.

    3. Hydroelectric

    Energy produced: Electric
Supplies pre-outbreak: Few (Not many have been built)
Supplies in a present outbreak: Fewer (Many workers will leave the power plant to return to families)
Supplies post outbreak: None (They cannot function without a trained team manning them)
    Uses: Powering, Recharging

I'll finish off the 5 other points later.

I'm just thinking (if for some reason you haven't) that fossil fuels will be nigh impossible to get hold of, except for petrol. And petrol would be more useful in vehicles.

Unless you go loot a power plant (or take over one), you're going to have to build these power sources from scratch. That pretty much rules out Fission and Fusion power, unless you happen to have some degrees in Nuclear Physics and the necessary materials to stop your fortress and fellow survivors sprouting extra limbs.

Most of these techniques generate heat energy (except for geothermal, which harnesses heat energy, I think). That heat can boil water, which generates steam, which drives a turbine, creating electricity. Either that, or the force that the power plant harnesses drives the turbine. This makes it relatively easy to build a power generator, albeit requiring a lot of resources.

      More coming.
