This plan (and lots of others) depends on whether Z-Day makes intelligent zombies. If the outbreak causes intelligent zombies who can remember stuff and actively use resources, then I'm screwed. However, this plan should be shambler- and rage-zombie proof.

Summary:

The plan is to head for a small, unoccupied/sparsely occupied island in the Indonesian archipelago (I have sailed through this region before, and know the dangers and environment well), with a fresh-water supply, and hopefully animals that can be eaten. There is heavy volcanic activity in the archipelago (google Krakatoa if you're wondering), and as a result soil is very fertile (also evidenced by the fact that native inhabitants happily grow lots of food on their islands, easily). Many of the inhabitants will most likely remain uninfected - on a particular island we anchored near, we were the first white people they had ever seen first-hand.

I'd sail there on a yacht, preferrably a large one (even better would be an old 'pinisi', an Indonesian topsail ketch used for trading, one of which I sailed down through Indonesia with). I will bring a small crew of friends who are able-bodied and trustworthy (in fact, a couple of them already have considered an evacuation scenario like Z-Day). Possibly, we will bring two yachts, and a rigid-inflatable outboard. Other than the normal provisions for a trip like this, and sufficient supplies to last us on the island before we can begin to cultivate food, I'd be bringing building supplies such as:

  • Bags of pre-mixed cement (as beach sand's sodium content is not good for concrete structures, we'll have to provide our own aggregate, which is why the pre-mixed cement mix is necessary)
  • Corrugated aluminium sheeting
As excavation tools are out of the question for the initial journey, shovels will be the best we can field to begin with. We will also bring high-quality welding tools. These can be found in hardware stores, or in a good aluminium shop (the welding tools would definitely be of a good quality, and few, or no crazed looters would target an aluminium shop in an industrial district).

Along with that, the other things we will need will be looted shortly after the outbreak, except for the obvious long-life stuff picked up beforehand - canned food, rice, flour - and firearms we already possess. As acquiring them after Z-Day will be an absolute nightmare, and the benefit of a few more guns (note that humans can currently hold a maximum of one (1) guns, with the exception of John Woo and the Terminator) does not outweigh the risks of planting our asses in the middle of The Panic, we will make do with the weapons we already own. As for ammunition, our stockpiles are sufficient to let us hunt and defend ourselves for a long time.

However, the few places we will visit are not the places people will first, or indeed ever, rush to in The Panic. The items we will acquire are:

  • A good salt-water distiller. These are sold in ships' chandlers.
