FN Five SeveNModel: FN Five-Seven
Trademarked as the Five-seveN, the FN Five-Seven, sometimes spelled as 5-7, is an unusual handgun that's seen a steady increase in popularity among civilian, military, and police shooters. The 5-7 was designed from 1993 to 1998 and first sold in 2000 when the Cypriot National Guard purchased 250 of them for their special forces group. Since then it has seen increases in sales and users, with many other military and police sales (including to the US Secret Service). The 5-7 is designed around a proprietary 5.7x28mm round, used in its companion gun the FN P90, created to answer NATO's request to produce a more effective handgun round than 9x19mm Parabellum. The pointed round (which resembles a miniature rifle bullet) is designed to easily defeat body armor, including NATO CRISAT armor. This was the subject of great controversy when the pistol was offered for civilian sale, with the Brady Campaign constantly questioning its civilian purpose and providing tests (countered by the NRA) to prove that it can penetrate kevlar armor. These incidents only increased sales, and armor-piercing ammo is not sold to civilians.

The Five-Seven Tactical is a single-action variant with an ambidextrous safety and slide release, discontinued with the release of the IOM. The Five-Seven IOM (Individual Officer's Model) was the first variant available to civilian sale, based on the Tactical with a Picatinny rail, serrated slide and trigger guard, adjustable sights, and a magazine safety (the weapon cannot fire unless a magazine is inserted). The Five-Seven USG (United States Government) is the current version with a square trigger guard and a larger, reversible magazine release, along with all of the features of the IOM.

Where to find

Despite using a proprietary cartridge, the 5-7 has only been getting more and more popular. Along with being used by over 40 police and military units around the world, it can be purchased for a rather costly $800-1200.

Complexity

The Five-Seven is mostly a standard handgun by FN, making it reliable in military-level testing and easy to use. The safety is in an unusual position, however, making it difficult for first-time shooters who are used to a frame or standard slide safety. The biggest problem is the ammunition, which is fairly expensive and difficult to find in retail stores.

Controls

  • Safety: While the original pistol is DAO and has no safety, the Tactical, IOM, and USG all have a manual safety on the left side of the receiver, above the trigger. Push down for FIRE, up for SAFE.
  • Magazine release: Located behind the trigger on the left side.
  • Slide release: Located above the trigger on the left side of the receiver (both sides with the Tactical, IOM, and USG).

This looks like an excellent Z-Day handgun due to ammo capacity, ammo type, and other factors. My choice handgun is evolving. Originally it would be my 1911, which I have some experience with, but the low ammo capacity is a drawback. When I stumbled across the CZ-75 on this site, I hoped I'd get my hands on one someday, and now that I've found this, I think perhaps it would be my top handgun for any zombie disaster, but then again, I'm not sure. There are various factors to consider. What do you think is the best handgun for Z-Day?
