Fallout 3's approach to survival instructionThis is a featured page

In the past two weeks I (Alicestar) have been sidetracked playing fallout 3. in the time that I have been playing the game I have found several useful survival ideas within the game.
1. the use of schematics to create weapons from ordinary household items.
2. the overall usefulness of the "pip-boy 3000"
3. the unspoken issues that could arise with Merc's, Raiders, and feral wildlife.
4. the possibility of "hybrids" meaning infected that maintain an average human intelligence.
5. A possibility of slavers arising from the disaster.

I'd like to use this page to hear thread discussion on the issues above and I would also like to see Input from our writers on possible information that could be put into a guide. If this page turns out quality information I will use it to formulate a distributable "hard copy" for all of you to keep with your gear.

WRITERS- please post your ideas along with your names below this line. start with your screen name otherwise your comment will be deleted.

Richboy33lb- I have made the slavery page and the radio page, both being based directly off of Fallout 3, the radio page being related to 3 Dog mostly. A Pip-Boy can be made, but it won't be a magic satchel, it can record what you have and how much of an item you have. Raiders, slavers, and possibly even people like Regulators (mock police force) and Talon Company (hitmen) will pop up eventually. Feral wildlife is more than likely. However, most of the enemies on the game are impossibilites. Deathclaws, Mirelurks, Giant Radscorpions, and almost all of the non-himan enemies are an impossbility. This is a good manual for a NUCLEAR APACOLYPSE, not zou just had about the instructablesombies.

Alicestar-I like the idea of the pip-boy 3000 as a digital map (gps type) system. not as a logistics device. if i want to know how many mags i have left ill look down at my pouches. several other features can be added such as the radio/scanner, LED light, maybe even a gps becon. you can use it to mark supply caches shelters and so on. Im looking int o using an Ipod touch for this but Im not sure what my final product will turn out to be.

Richboy33lb- It is possible for a Pip-Boy like object may be made, but you won't be able to hold items in it or heal yourself with it or teleport with it, while you may be able to mark locations with it or mark down what items you do have.

ALicestar- I think we all just kind of assumed that we wouldn't be able to teleport with it. as for the healing feature, im sure we could load a ton of first aid/EMT data on to the device to allow of you to better treat yourself or someone else with the supplies you have.

Kevin990- I love the idea you just had about the instructables; could be very useful if it also came with voice prompts telling you the steps to take. I'm guessing you could load it with all sorts of useful information. Such as info on hot wiring cars, different cars have different ignition systems so you open a file on the car your in, load up the 'how to hotwire' file and away you go. Im trying to think of more situations it could adapt to... I'll put them here when i think of them.
So just to break it down, the features of this Pip-Boy so far are:

(Just edit the list as you think of more, no need to make another paragraph)

GPS
Instructables
Radio/scanner
LED light
GPS beacon

Dude1307- I like your thoughts, but I think you could add a short wave transmitter to the mix, because it would only take a little more power and it would be worth it in the long run

Finnishsurvivor- Pipboy 3000 would be something useful. What about adding some kind of database to it?
For example, you could add information about some plan that cures something and then add the area to
the GPS map. Or some specific animal on the area.

Alright. So let me get this straight. You want to build something you saw in a videogame?

Well, I have one thing to say about that.

Can i help?

Alright, we established what it needs, so now we have to establish how to make it.

1. Instructables
It needs to have instructions on how to create things. That seems easy enough. An ordinary, small-sized cd (the kind you find in the gamecube) can hold an entire, huge game, graphics and all. So i think that about (X amount) of those cd's could hold ALOT of information. One cd on medical care, another on everything you'll ever need to know about guns, another on surviving in the wilderness, another on making homemade weopong and armor, the possibilities are almost endless! Now onto our second thing that we need.

2. Voice recorder
It needs to be able to record your voice. This can be done with an oldschool tape recorder, or you can once again modify one of those cd's to fit into it. You can record anything from, how NOT to kill a zombie, or your final whim.

3. GPS
GPS devices, nowadays, are pretty small. Small enough to fit in a watch. A small LCD screen from a camera should be sufficient. the GPS itself might be a little blulky, but im sure it'll fit.

4. A Small Computer System
This is needed to power all of these gadgets and gizmose in the right direction. Nothing fancy, just the ordinary, run of the mill, ipod sized machine. It only has to direct power in the right manor, and have buttons to do the stuff with. Bear with me, Im dead tired, studied for exams for about 6 hours. Anything fancy you want to add on there, go ahead.

5. A Power System
As all electronics, this pip-boy will need power. I think that power could come from two batteries. those batteries will attatch to a solar panel. When one runs out, start charging it with the solar panel, and then take the other one off.

Im thinking about making a survivors guide to the end of civilization (zombie or otherwise) in this guide I was thinking of including detailed schematics for making safe/functional weapons from common household items. would anybody here be interested in having a copy of this "guide" to add to their gear?

i think i will start saving my bottle caps right now. I doubt we will use pre apocalypse currency, if any at all.

markets would probably start back on the barter system of trading goods for goods anyway, but if there is a currency, i wonder what it would be...
