Weapons cleaning & maintenance is one of two things to most people: a fun activity or a pain. One thing is for certain....

It needs to be done.

Some people ask "Why is it necessary to clean my AK-47? It's designed to work FOREVER!" That is ignorance.

Other people ask "It's fine for me to clean my (Insert Weapon-Of-Choice) when I have time, but I don't like to..." That is laziness.

Some other people ask "What is the purpose of cleaning my (Insert Weapon-Of-Choice)? How does this better my equipment? How does this better me in a coming battle or as a warrior in general? How is this useful?" That is a wise question.

An intelligent person will ask you a million questions and receive few answers due to the constant questions. Then Walk Away

A wise person will ask you few questions... and listen to your answers. Then Thank You.

Maintaining your Weapon of Choice is something that must be done. It makes you a better warrior on the battlefield, and it increases you capability of survival.

Sure, you can fire your Shotgun while hunting over and over. Shoot that Phesant. Bring home some Bird-Game. Cook. Eat the bird. Leave the Shotgun in the safe. Or Closet. Or next to your bed... where ever you leave it. I'm sure it's fine.

What about working your 9am to 7pm job? You do this as a busy store manager. Or as a Security Agent. Or as a restaurant worker. Or as a Farmer. Or as a Soldier/Marine/Sailor/Airman who works long hours. Many MANY people work longer than they should. There's things other than guns and weaponry, for sure. You like to spend time with the family... the new girl/boy... your new video game... a good book. Either way, that weapon you spent good hard earned money on is going to need your attention.

On a long enough time line, everything has a lifespan of "0". Everything has an expiration date. Sausages, Salad, Beer, Cigarettes, Bread, Your Dog, Your Vehicle Warranty, Your Computer, Your Watch, Your Shoes, The Nice Suit You Purchased, Sunglasses, Socks, Underwear, Your Love For Your Love, Batteries, Mattresses, Blankets, Your Credit Card, Matches, Paper, The Hat You Love To Wear Everyday, Your Favorite Pen,...

Everything, including you.

So, going on, what to do with your Weapon-Of-Choice...

Simple... Clean the thing!

Corrosion & such will happen with many of the firearms you see in movies & such. Yes, the M249 SAW look's fun to shoot (and it is!), but don't ask me how to take it apart for you. Most people on this site (and Others) have no concept of how to employ such a weapon, so talking about it here is useless. I'm here to tell you about a very basic & easy weapon to use. A M1911 varient semi-auto pistol in .45 ACP Caliber.

The varient I will be using for this excersise is the Paraordinance P-14 High Capacity .45 Caliber. It's something I got though contract with the U.S. Army & I love it. It's easy to shoot, easy to reload, easy to employ on demand, easy to dismantel, easy to clean, and more importantly:

It's easy to find a pistol of this type in most "Mom-&-Pop" gun retailers.

The Paraordinance P-14 in question:

Para FS 1

Some notes here, and please follow:

Things you must do...
1) Render weapon SAFE. As you can see in the photo above, there is no safety engaged & there is a Magazine loaded.
NOTES: The black bar towards the back of the pistol grip on the weapons Right Side is DOWN. See that notch towards the Hammer? That should not look unfilled. See the black pad at the bottom of the pistol grip? That's a loaded magazine. So what do you do?

2) Press the small black circle to the right of the trigger (the Black quarter moon shape device is the trigger) until you hear a 'click'.

This is what you should see:

3) Remove the Magazine from the Magazine well (AKA The Pistol Grip). You should see this:
Semi-Auto Field Striping & Cleaning - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

4) Pull the upper reciever (AKA the Slide) back & engage the 'Slide Catch (The black bar directly above the trigger)by pushing up on it.
This is what you should see:

5) Check the Chamber & see that it is clear. You should see this:

6) Once the weapon has been rendered Safe proceed to do the following. Pull the "Slide" back and press up on the slide catch bar (The black bar right above the Trigger & Trigger Well) until the slide is safely locked in place:

7) while maintaining the slide in the back/locked position, WITH YOUR DOMINANT HAND, grip pistol & find the "Half Moon notch" on the left of the slide:

8) After finding the outlet for the slide catch, on the opposite end of the pistol push in. It is the circular thing right above the trigger housing on the right hand side of the pistol:

9) After pushing in the slide catch bar push DOWN on the bar. It should look like this:Semi-Auto Field Striping & Cleaning - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

10) Once it is remove fully, you should see this:

11) when you have done this push the 'slide' forward. Remove the 'slide' from the 'pistol grip'. It should look like this:Semi-Auto Field Striping & Cleaning - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

12) If you made it this far... good! Nothing should have snapped or been damaged. Proceed to remove the Guide rod, Guide rod Spring, and the Buffer. Here's how.

The guide rod buffer is located on the front of the barell. You need to pay attention here. Listen Up!

The Guide rod buffer acts as a 'lock' for the guide rod & guide rod spring by keeping the proper tension inside the pistol. This is how the pistol is able to fire over & over again. It keeps the mechanisms in line & lets them keep doing what they are doing.

1. Feeding
2. Chambering
3. Locking
4. Firing
5. Unlocking
6. Extracting
7. Ejecting
8. Cocking

CAUTION!!!!

If you do this wrong the Guide rod 'container' (the cylindrical prortion of the weapon) will shoot off & leave one of two things

A) a nasty gouge in your wall
B) one less of an eyeball

Follow these steps:

See the black tear drop thing in front of the pistol? It's easy to see with mine being that it's a 'Desert Tan'. It's right there:

The guide rod spring & guide rod spring buffer is located on the lower portion of the picture you are seeing. There was a special tool that came with my .45 ACP weapon, but you can just as easily do it with your fingers. CAUTION: if your fingers are not up to it, you will recieve some slight brusing.

13) Place guide rod & guide rod removal system on tip of barrel. See following photos:

14) Being that the pistol is rendered safe & not a harmful weapon. Place the 'Guide Rod & Buffer Spring assembly remover' on the tip of the barrel as shown:

Semi-Auto Field Striping & Cleaning - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

15) press in the tool until you are able to make a quarter turn on said piece of equipment.

DO NOT POINT AT YOUR FACE, WINDOW'S, OR OTHERTHINGS THAT CAN BE DAMAGED!!!

16) Once that is done, continue to turn the "Guide rod & Guide rod spring buffer" until you can remove the Guide Rod Spring & it's container safely.

17) This is what you should see.

18) Proceed to remove the buffer spring & it's container head.

20) You should now see this.

21) To remove the barrel observe where my index finger is:

22) see that little bar that finger is on? Push it forward.

23) Once that is complete you are free to remove the Barrel.

24) There you have it. The Paraordinance P-14 Hi-Cap fully field stripped.

25) The next step to cleaning your M1911 type weapon is to clean the various parts that are needed for continuous operation. Here you have all the neccessary components to clean your weapon. CLP, Barrel Punch, Brush, etc... it's all there.

Field Stripping, Cleaning, & reasembly: Semi-Auto M1911 Version Pistol - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

26) Now, we shall look at all the neccessary points for cleaning. As you can see, the barrel punch is outfited with a Brass scruber for cleaning out the barrel. A step here is that you pour a few drops of Break Free / CLP down the barrel. Not too much, just enough to lubricate the inside of the barrel for scrubing.

Field Stripping, Cleaning, & reasembly: Semi-Auto M1911 Version Pistol - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

27) Once you have left the barrel alone with the CLP in the barrel, begin scrubing the barrel like you would a dirty toilet. In, out, in, out... repeat as necessary.Field Stripping, Cleaning, & reasembly: Semi-Auto M1911 Version Pistol - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

28) Again...

29) and... AGAIN! Once you have scrubbed a barrel a few times ( I like to do it about 12 times ) it's time to break out a cleaning patch. The cleaning patch is a piece of cloth designated to absorb any left over debres.
