I beleive, if you had the proper supplies, a tree fortress would be the perfect plan. Of course you would have to consider how to deal with certain problems, which should be discussed here. If we can get enough discussion here I may even make a page.
First off, this tree fortress would not be the typical tree house. It would be built out in a forest, and have different ledges and platforms that are built around and between the many trees, and there would be many ways of escape. Not only would zombies not see you in the trees (unless they heard you and looked up), but even if they smelled you, and even if there were hundreds... thousands of them, they would not be able to pile up enough to reach you (unlike walls, they would have little to pile up AGAINST, other than trees and eachother) Another thing to consider is that in a forest you would be more out of the areas raiders would look, and if you only used rope ladders and tree climbing spikes and cleared the bottom branches, you could make it more difficult for even them to reach you. Another plus for being in the trees is that, being high up, you have a fairly good lookout (aulthough there will be other trees in the way of your vision). Now this seems like a great idea and it can be if you plan well, but you have to consider the problems that are also involved. Fire: Fire is a great benefit to us humans, but it can also be your downfall if your fort is in the trees. How would you control the fire you need to keep you warm and cook, and what would you do if there is a forest fire (either induced by nature, or raiders who decide if they can't have your supplies no one can) This is where the many different parts of your tree fortress could come in. Where would you get the supplies? How would you deliver them? What would you do to keep snow from demolishing your fortress from sheer weight? Post your ideas here.

although lacking immediate food, lowes/home depot can provide excelent fortresses on two conditions. first that you get there before the raiders and second that you construct a garden immediately. My personal idea would be to create your HQ off of the ground (but not on the roof because of the garden). what i would do is connect the aisles together to create a raised platform high enough to not be reachable on foot, and sturdy enough not to be knocked over. thats just my thoughts though. feel free to reply

I plan to have a fortress in the woods. My bro and I have a lot of tin, and wooden siding, plates, etc. I am working on the 3d model of it. At first, it will be a simple fort- hang on i gtg take a ****.....ok so asimple fort made of wood and tin pl8ing around four trees that are in a square pretty much. There will be a sleeping tent, a fire pit, rain collector, and such. After awhile it will expand to a very large fort with medic tents, armory, etc.

Many people want to keep moving others feel that digging in and fortifing thier location is the way to go. What if you could have both? If you could get a hold of a heavy duty diesel truck (think F-350) with a equiptment trailer you could bring a backhoe or small excavator with you. At the end of the day you could simply pick a house with a big yard and dig a ditch around it. When you've picked the area clean of the things you need simply fill in an area large enough to get your rig out and move on to your next destination. The roman army did the same thing every evening when they were marching cross country in foreign lands. The backhoe just eliminates the need for all that manpower. If you had a buddy with a bucket truck you'd add a mobile watch tower to the equation.

In the modern home, there might be problems with stairs, as often they are made of concrete. the only way to cut concrete is with a water cooled diamond edged saw, even a small set of stairs can be impossible to demolish with a sledgehammer. Does anybody have any other ideas about quietly removing a set of stairs?
btw: fences in urban areas have 5ft height limits in Australia (exceptions occur) due to people having to be able to see cars backing out of driveways and so on. does anybody know how to extend the height of a brick wall relatively quickly in case of an emergency?

Due to my house, i would be able to prepare my defenses and get ready more than quite a few other people, heres why:
There is steps outside my house, then at the top theres a gate, THEN you have a little path, which leads to my door which is not made out of clear glass at all, with a window that has a blurry pattern at the top. Anyone else got a good house that will take a long time for zombies to come?

I know this one place, small island, steep banks, swift, deep water. Place takes coordination to get to from the water. Only one small bridge, easily barricaded. Several boat dock that would need to be dealt with. Room for several big gardens.

Living on a farm I can tell you that contary to popular belief they can provide some of the most secure protection you can find.
To my knoledge nearly all barns have hay lofts that are usually accessed by either stairs or a latter depending on the age of the building which can easilly be destroyed, knocked over or completely filled in with an imovable mass of squar bails of hay. this not the only advantage however as most farms carry firearms to defend there land and ward off predators or tools that can be implimented as highly effective weapons. The doors themselves are a combination of usually large "garage style" doors that shut from the top to provide ideal protection from the living dead and doors that are operate with other doors for entrance to stop horses from getting in so when your in a pinch I would suggest finding a farm along your path that you'll likely be taking if you've wisely avoided the city and stuck to farm country. If anyone has input as to strengths and weaknesses of farms and other similar buildings post them here.

My plan woul be to go to my friend's 2 story house, knock dow the stairs, and build a pully elevator (who wouda tunk?)! remember that the acient civilizations used pullies to build the largest monuments and structures in milenia! next, I would gather concrete and build a wall around the house, giving space for future structures/farming space. I would probably move to my aunt and uncle's farm about 30 minutes away and do this frist, but hey, gotta have a back-up plan!

Really, you don’t. Simply secure the first-floor windows and doors, and you CAN keep the skin jobs out.
Furthermore, Max BROOKES not withstanding, evacuating the first floor leaves you open to skin jobs getting in, which in the midst of a mindless rage can lead anywhere from a mess to a full-flegded conglaguration, meaning you get to choose between dying from being barbequed, or getting bitten (and then you better hope you get eaten) by the skin jobs. DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR FIRSTST FLOOR UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES; HOLD WHAT YOU GOT TO THE DEATH, because once you give it up, you can’t get it back. (I guess if you want to live, you’ve got to kill all the skin jobs.)
