Frequently Asked QuestionsThis is a featured page

Welcome to the Zombie Survival and Defense Wiki FAQ and General Information page. Here, some of the most essential questions about this site and popular topics will be answered and covered to help new members get a better understanding about the place and a feel for how we do things.

Q: Do you guys actually believe in zombies? That's pretty immature. Zombies aren't real.

A: This site originated as a place to discuss zombie films and fiction. It soon became apparent that the idea of a zombie invasion was easily translated into real-life disaster survival scenarios. Most of the members on this site use the metaphor of "Zombies" as a fun way to prepare for real-life catastrophes and disasters. We understand that no actual case of zombism exists, but under the motto of "Prepare for the worst and survive" we use the hypothetical scenario of a massive invasion of the undead masses to have a good time and learn valuable information at the same time.

Q: How does the "Wiki" part of this site work?

A: The Wiki pages are able to be edited by any registered member, with the exception of a few pages that the Moderators and Administrators have deemed perfect, or have been at the center of a controversy requiring them to be locked for their own safety. Once you register, feel free to contribute to any of the Wiki pages. However, keep in mind, this site has been around a while, and a page on your topic may already exist. Use the "Search" function, to see if you can improve and add to an existing page instead of creating a new one.

Q: Are you guys like *4chan* or other message boards?

A: ABSOLUTELY NOT. Here on the ZSDW, we value intelligent conversation, respect of other members, and proper use of the entire keyboard. The site is carefully staffed and moderated by a dedicated team of our most active members. Remember, the Wiki is an informative and non-biased collection of information that should be easy to read and easy to understand. More leniency is given on the Discussion Boards, but repeated disrespect to others, including Moderators and Administrators, may result in disciplinary action.

Q: How do I become a Moderator/Administrator?

A: Firstly, you cannot simply *ask* for a promotion; Potential Moderators are chosen by the existing Moderators and Administrators, however this choice is made depending on the talent of the candidate. All Staff on the ZSDW are either over 18 years of age, or are able to act in a similar, mature manner - this is essential for the position, as you must be able to pass judgment and mediate hostile situations that, unfortunately, arise in discussion. All Staff must be able to write informative and easily understandable posts in the forums - this means typing with correct (or near-correct) spelling, grammar and punctuation, as well as being able to offer a logical and well-thought out response to a topic. Potential Moderators also need to have made at least a handful of well-thought out, logical, and helpful edits to pre-existing pages - or even better, written substantial new pages that have been judged helpful. While we do not have a minimum time requirement for the position, you must be known around the Wiki - not only by the Staff, but by the other members too! Finally, we only choose those who are genuinely interested in Zombies, and want to improve the site - and from this we derive the golden rule: If you come here solely with the intention of becoming a Moderator, you have no business here!

There are many discussions and debates that have been over-played here. Many a new member has re-opened one of these old and well hashed subjects only to be disappointed with the negative reaction from the current members. Some of these things include: The effectiveness of a Katana, the AR vs. AK debate, and using movie plots in real life.

Please do not come into this site thinking you are the only one who has ever thought of something before. Many of our members have been here for several years, some have been in the military, and most have heard it all. Acting like you are superior, making demands, or putting down our members will only result in your embarrassment.

While the site is currently in the process of being re-organized, there is still a search function. Please use this before posting a new Wiki page or Discussion thread. Your topic has most likely been brought up before. Your input and ideas are welcome and appreciated, but should be added to existing material and discussions.

Is there a way of finding out if any members live near me? Perhaps I could make a group, to prepare for the worst nearby my home. I live in the capital region near Albany, New York, but have no family members in the state, and all of my personal friends think this whole concept is just ridiculous. It would be nice to have like minded individuals to chat with and prepare with, who know the area in which I live. I'm kinda new to the area.
